I've seen in some TV programmes and schools holding karaoke competitions that they manage to play songs without the singer's voice. Is there a free programme online that allows us to do this?

I use Goldwave to make my karaoke clips--> http://www.goldwave.com/

Just download and install one of the versions onto your PC. Open up the program then import the mp3. Go to effects > stereo > reduce vocals. a box will pop up, then go to the presets drop-down menu, select one of the options and click on the green play button to listen to what it would sound like. Depending on what the original track is like, different presets will yield slightly different results.
Click the okay button when you're happy with how it sounds.

just fiddle around with the presets found in the reduce vocals option. some work better than others. and it also depends on the original track itself. I find that tracks which contain a lot of computerised sounds harder to remove the vocals without ruining the sound of the music. in general, tracks that only have piano or guitar accompaniment are easiest to remove the vocals from.

in most high quality music developing devices there is an equalizer. on that equalizer try lowering the "1k" (pretty sure it was "k") and some around it. since the 1k frequency is most likely the voice.

Here's a free program Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/) that edits audio.

I heard that it was pretty good, but never tried it. They have some tutorials in the "Help" section of the site. Worth a try.
