View Full Version : What is your rating of the new Ye Qu (Nocturne)?
No, seriously.
Toss away all your excitement and biases and examine the song with a critical eye. How does it match up with his previous works?

this song isn't that good.. comparing it to his previous works.. abit like WaiPo although i think WaiPo is better.. well.. Ye Qu is kind of unique though.. although quite plain.. nevermind.. but i'll be doubtful if Ye Qu is one of his main songs in November's Chopin.. but cant wait to get the album!.. well.. all the best Jay! Jia You! [RoCk oN]

so i'll save the praise Allah.. :wink2:
overall i find this song quite soothing and meaningful..
the intro tune might sound familiar..
BUt i kind of like it..
cuz of the lyrics..
it's sort of sad.. but then sweet..
honestly i wouldn't compare it with his older songs..
cuz all of them has diff style, diff taste.. diff meaning..
 keep it up, Jay.. this might not be your bez..
i'm sure there's more to come..
:excited: awaits November's Chopin (011105)

i love it. its so dark and deep and depressing.
i didn't quite like it at first, i thought it was plain. like to any other un-jay fan out there, or those who can't understand jay's music well enough, it would sound like any other of his songs - mumbling singing, slow ballad-ish tunes with some rapping.
but listen carefully to the lyrics and the melody of the song... it sounded much happier during the promotional clip without his singing - it could even have passed off for some korean drama theme. but after listening to it for quite some time, the melody is actually quite haunting and the rapping part makes it have some kind of flavour as Ba Wo Hui Lai Le... the melody sounds as though it will become a ballad, but it has so much rapping in it that makes it different. i think the rapping part caught me off guard... its like a in-your-face contrast with the melody, but blending in the tune so well that makes it special.
furthermore, the strong guitar in the song makes it have this strong english flavour to it, though its a chinese song. its like no other typical chinese-y songs out there. i thought jay's song was edging towards the 'pop-ballad'-ish side when i heard the tunes of Qing Tian in Ye Hui Mei and Yuan You Hui in Qi Li Xiang, meaning of more of like sing-along songs.
but this song proved me otherwise, this is one song that defines jay as different. this song defines jay to be deeper in his songwriting than other ordinary poppish songs, despite it not being able to become a song that's going to be sung around karaokes. furthermore its so different such that the starting sounds so simple with the bells and all, one wouldn't expect it to be such a dark and painful love song.
furthermore, i think we cannot except jay to churn out tunes of Jian Dan Ai all the time, he's 26 for goodness sake. there would be some maturity in his music compared to then, and i think the style of jay's songs maintain through the years, but they grow with him from simple melodies to more haunting and deeper ones.
i think those who praise allah for this song would be a fan of Zhi Zhan Zhi Shang and Yi Fu Zhi Ming too. :wink2: it has the same deep dark genre to it, which i love so much.
right i'm blabbering off my head.
i love it. *goes off to listen to it on repeat* praise allah! i wanna marry it!

Wow! The first option, praising Allah is a little bit over-doing. I chose the second option. It's awesome I would say. It's very different than many other songs he sang, I find it pretty cool and especially the meaning of the lyrics, meaningful!

i think this song is great...but picked 4....i think many people overtaken by the beat of the song...its a great beat....but i think jay's singing of these kind of songs is pretty normal these days...i think there will be much better songs than this in his new album..

it's a fabulous work and i really love it manymany !!! i donknw why but i just love this song alot. the melody, the way he sang it, just everything. the style and plus it was composed by him, which made me love it even more. it's totally a different song and i just love it the minute i heard it, the tune is rather catchy. totally DIAO (:

I just absolutely love the Lyrics... i really want to scream to Vincent that this is just awesome work!
Okie.. after the lyrics... I am really attractive by the intro.. Let's just say that it is my kind of music, esp. with gothic feel that really went up to a max after i read the lyrics.
I would say that i am not disappointed at all. This is just 'Jay' style, i would say... I am now dying to listen to other songs in the album...
OH.. My the way, i chose 4 because i believe Jay will have more installed for us with each release haha... :bleh:
It's one of the best Jay song I've ever heard of. I must say that this song has a unique style, more of a relaxing type and I think it is the best to listen to this song at night (cos it's Ye Qu =P)
This song is not as fast paced with lots of rapping, such as Ren Zhe. Neither does it sound plain and bland to me such as Jian Dan Ai. I love this relaxing style. I never knew how rapping can sound so relaxing!!

Yes. i've gotta admit, i love the lyrics oh too much. But the tune, well so-so only. I love Silence more. Silence is a song for those people in the teenage years.. and those people who have puppy love..
This song, especially the part about crying beside the grave, well.. the meaning is there, but i don't think i'll appreciate it, THAT much. So, my rating, 3-4 out of 5 stars
** i chose 3 cause 4 seems too much.

when i heard the intro for the promo ad, i tot, sounds like any other song leh. the first time i heard the whole song, i was glad to hear rap and stuff...and it being so Jay. but it did sound a bit plain. now, the more i listen the more i love it. it grows on me, the mood of the song slowly sets in. and the lyrics really contribute a lot to the whole meaning of the song.
the song is very classy and sleek, yet gothic with a melancholic feel. I LOVE THIS SONG! But if I am to compare with Jay's other works...it would be another excellent piece, but not exactly the BEST.

i voted for 5! my fingers were too fast for the brain to think n analyse... haha.. biasness...
but now, when i think abt it, i think i'll put 4 instead. i dun think it's really unbeatable, n i think it's quite hard to compare to his previous songs, cos like some of u said, it's rather different. but yet, it's so jay chou...
however, i think jay has matured in his music. this song may sound simple, but i think it is deeper than it is... the meaning (han2 yi4)..... n there seems to be more substance than his previous works... i don't quite know how to put it, but i think i can feel his sincerity in making music...

i gave a 4. simply because i don't want to overrate it.
i think the song is nice and touching but it fails to captivate me totally (or at least for now) i am in love with the song yes, but i can't say it his jay's best best work. i can see the change in style so applause (:
i think the lyrics are slightly darker and its different from the usual sappy love song lyrics so applause for vincentfong (: i love the lyrics!!
the beat reminds me of piaoyi (as numerous others have mentioned previously) but i'd have to say i am waiting for the song to grow on me (:
i still love the song anyway :D

The first time I heard the song I wasn't too impressed. But it was really catchy and I could familarise with the tune after just one listen as compared to say, Qi Li Xiang. But after listening to it a couple of times, I have got to say that I like it. I don't think it's the best best but it is definitely listenable. The thing about ye qu is that it's different. It's so Jay in the way he sings the song and the way he mumbles along but overall it feels different from his previous works. And maybe that's way I would hesitate to put 4 as my vote.
But still, I like it enough to give it a 4. though just barely.
what i like the most about this song is the feeling it gave to me when i hear it for the first time. I felt the loneliness, depression, sadness directly. I think another Jay's songs that gave me that feeling are Ge Qian and Wai Po only. Ye Qu is the third. That's why i voted for it's one of the best works he has done, fo sho!
hopefully there will be another songs in his new album that impressed me like this one. :wink2:

I chose option 4.
Reason is because i find that Jay shld have a room for improvment. When i heard the intro of the song it kindda rings a bell as it sound like one of the theme songs of "Stairway to Heaven". But the verse starts of with a rap which is a very Jayish style. The accompaniment using guitar and piano really attracts me. A plus point is that Jay is able to integrate RnB, rap, and the accompaniment instruments all in one song. Also, Vincent Fang did a great job on writing the lyrics which has such a deep meaning.
Hope that the other songs in November's Chopin would not let me down.

Like yenny1106, my fingers automatically clicked 5. Now that I think about it, I guess it would be a 4, or maybe a 4.5. I love the song to death, but I guess there's always room for improvement! It's quite different from a lot of his other songs, which is one of the reasons why I love it so much.
The lyrics were written really well. Vincent did a fantastic job! I should really stop listening to it. It's been on repeat for a while, and I seriously think that I will get sick of it really soon. *hurries off to change songs*

its pretty good...well...its ....different...the lyrics are really well written, there's a slight change in his style with this song than others, but well..even though I like some of his older songs better, but I definitely say this piece of work's really well done, can't wait for the album to come out! (I gave it a 4 btw)
I chose 4. but honestly, why can't I chose 4.5? T_T :D I love the tune, because this style of music is the type I love the most. The lyrics are assstounding. But just something about it makes me go hmm.. this isn't as great as Jay can do. Maybe our standards are just too high, but oh well. I already voted anyway <<;;

i'd definitely give it a 4!
after hearing it for only a few seconds, i knew it would be one of my favorite jay songs of all time :) you can tell that it's a little different from his previous works, which makes its all the more interesting. when i later saw the lyrics, i loved it even more! everything about this song just seems to fit perfectly together! though i didnt give it a 5/5, i still love this song to bits!

I've to admit that vincent Fang is a really really awesome... i am not disappointed at all....
i juz want to say .... "vincent" + "jay" = "perfect" and "unbeatable"
It's totally cool and no words that i can express it....
jay' style = "diao3"

At first I thought the song was ridiculous... the arrangements were elementary, the singing was cliche, and the chorus was the typical stuff. Not to mention, the guitar/bass combination is being overdone in Asia. After a while, I felt that the song as a whole was not so bad; it was acceptable. Now I learn what the lyrics are supposed to be and I can start to see the reasoning behind everything. Still, it did not blow me away so I chose 3.

the guitar makes it sound so spanish.. i don't know, but it seems to match with the promote picture (the one where he looks like a korena with a venice-like background).. i guess that what i think.. and it's a great song.. kinda reminds me of piao yi.. althought i didn't really like piao yi when i 1st heard of it.. but then i totally love it now! however, i think ye qu is better than piao yi, i mean i like it the minute i listened to it.. it's beautiful, so smoooooth and soooothing at the same time.. i think this is the song i'll choose to turn to when times get rough for me =) hehehe [B]love ya JAY! <3 you're music is my life~!

I gave it a 4... :D i reckon this song is great...the melody, the lyric is awesome..but, i couldnt sense he brings out a new color to this album or is it me who isnt sensitive enough about music.. well, anyway, it's only one of them, i am still waiting for him to bring out the true magic...lolz...
I'm trying my best not to be too overexcited and biased here, so I waited a few days before attempting to rate the new song.
I'm gonna compare this to preview songs released for the other albums.
From recent memory, I can only base this on YHM's YFZM and QLX's QLX. And comparing Nocturne to the latter, I must say I'm more impressed this time.
Many did bring up a point of the song not able to show off Jay's vocal range, but I thought that such songs should be possibly left to his slow ballads instead. Songs like Nocturne are meant to present the overall impression of the album and the fact that our wonderboy is still choking fun of creativity.
I polled a 4.
The lyrics itself was awesome and Jay's dark yet up tempo classic piano melody was a good complement.
I'm expecting great things from November Chopin.

The lyrics are good also... can't wait for the album. Yeah..
One of his best songs yes! we are all excited for the nem album release!
it seems jay is trying to change his composing style, no its not change..its more like evolution of his work..using chopin as inspiration and all
i like it cause, when YHM and 7LX was release a lot of people said his music doesnt change, that its getting boring etc..
well now i think he is answering to that

Only heard of ye qu once over radio. Think it resembles 'zhi zhan zhi shang', because of the classical music element and the 'format' of rap before chorus. Still, think this song sounds nicer than 'zhi zhan zhi shang', as the melody of the chorus is not so monotonous, and more catchy also. Think Jay is right in choosing this song as the 'first hit', since the rap part makes it more challenging, yet the chorus part is melodious and easy to catch. So this song can please anyone, guys or gals. Anyway, hope I'll still like the song as much after listening to it more.=) Really anticipating hearing his other new songs too=)

It's a clash of slow and fast melodies together. I don't understand how it works. You have slow music in the background, with a quick upbeat rap. Not to mention the lyrics are simple beautiful. You can't even tell if he's rapping or singing because it blends quite well.
I gave it a 4! I wouldn't marry this song - but I'd definately love it.

the song melts my heart when i first listen to it... i am still listening to it now... i think i have repeat the song for donno how many times already... but i am sure it's more than 500 times! :wink2: i really love it... the music... the lyrics... hope u guys out there also love the song as much as i do... Jay Rocks!
This song carries a "Jay Style" essence. The rhythm matches well with the lyrics meaning (especially the chorus). You may need to listen afew times to get the "flow" of the song. Listening for the first time, i don't have much feeling for the song... till when i know the story behind the song, i'm touched.
I rate it 5. As this song makes me abandon the rest of the songs in my mp3player.

I voted for the third option.
I didn't fell in love with the song the first time I hear it but it was good.
Not as great as Qing Tian or Ge Qian,
my top 2 fave Jay songs, but still I think it's an ear candy like the rest. :shiny:

FAMILIAR. Is how I wld describe this song.
I find this song pretty average when I first heard it. It sounds so 'last-time'? Yep, it sounds like it can be mixed into his previous albums seamlessly.. However, the lyrics are beautiful, and the song grows on me more when I heard it again and again. The rap is not that fast (shld be quite ok to master :P) and the melody's nice.. Plus there's this part in which jay raps the same way as he did in one of his previous songs, but i can't fathom which one...

I like the rhyme of this song ,especially the sound of guitar.
Like others, the meaning of this song is great.
