I am no expert in HK shopping since I haven't been there for ages, but I do know places like Mongkok have a lot of the popular stuff. There's also a street that sells a lot of shoes there, so you should check it out. You should check out Tsim Sai Tsui? since from my friends, they all like going there.

You should also visit the Hong Kong thread, perhaps the people there could give you better recommendations :wink2:

Always haggle :p
I don't know if that's also for shoes, but, in tourist areas, things are overpriced, as their targets are tourists. It happened once that I was buying a mp3, original price: 1400 HKD (something like that), lowed it down to 700 HKD because we were able to speak cantonese.

I am no Hong Konger, neither do i know where to get the brands you were asking for. But I've been to HK recently and I can share a bit with you. Try to stay in Kowloon area, rather than HK Island.

There's much more activity there.

Depends on what you're looking out for. If you're looking for electronic gadgets, go to Sham Shui Po.

If you're looking for clothes, go to Tsim Sha Tsui (in particular Granville Road). If you're looking for good food ... everywhere. Hehhehe.

There is this new mall which opened up recently in Kwun Tong called APM Mall. It basically stands for AM to PM. The mall is basically opened for 24 hours. There's a lot of shopping and eating you can do there, but more on the middle-class prices. There's also a KTV there. Their KTV ain't too bad, got quite a good collection of chinese songs. Cantonese songs, needless to say.

As for food, you can go to eat at those Cha Can Teng/Cafe. The famous dessert stalls are Hui Lau Shan and Tong Chiu (Tang Dynasty).

If you have more time, I suggest you take the ferry out to nearby islands like Lamma Island, Cheung Chau or even Macau to try your luck at the casinos. :brows: December is gonna be pretty cold and rainy. So, be prepared. You can bring your boots.

Movie watching is pretty expensive there, I'd rather you save the money and get to those discount stores to get some really good bargains on their DVDs.

here, come ask the expert!!
i'm afraid that you'll be disappointed if you want vans sneakers or zooyork, because we have limited vans sneakers and we have no zooyork (i haven't even heard of it).

if you're looking for vans sneakers, you should visit this shop called "Hoso Place". it sells clothes and shoes. Our Vans sneakers are pretty different from that i see in other countries, i.e. not the skateboarding kind. You'll see that most of the Vans they sell here are slip ons and other more local looking shoes. If you want the skateboarding kind, you'll have to go to Quiksilver/Roxy or X-Game those surf stores.

tell you another place where you can get sneakers-- Mong Kok. There's this road that sells all and only sneakers, it's nickname is "sneaker street" a.k.a. "boh hai gai" in cantonese.

i assume you'd like a shopping trip, so i'll tell you some of the better shopping malls. I'll put them in different categories:

higher class/clothes with brands: (you should really visit these!)
HK Island- Times Square and Sogo in Causeway Bay
Kowloon- Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui, Langham Place in Mong Kok
New Territories- APM in Kwun Tong

unbranded/street wear/cutesy stuff:
HK Island- Causeway Palce, Island Beverly, Jardine's Lookout (this one is a small lane...something like a market) in Causeway Bay
Kowloon- Granville road in Tsim Sha Tsui; Trendy Zone, Argyle Center, Fa Yuen Street (this one is a market) in Mong Kok

you can always ask me if there's something specific you'd like to know! hope this helps :)

HI!
my best friend and i are planning a trip to HK...

as recommened by retro above, can someone add more places to shop

and how about price levels...do they change with the season...like were planning to go by july

how about shops for DVDs and CDs?

haggling is recommended right? how about for the malls which have sticker prices...do i need to learn like basic cantonese "haggling"? ive seen some shows where they bring the calculator and show it to the shopkeeper...
would that be okay?

Ah DVDs and CDs!! :excited: My expertise XP

Well if you want to buy those REAL copies, go to places like Hong Kong Records (I'm only familiar with the Kwai Fong Metroplaza and the Kowloon Tong Festival Walk one... right next to my school! XP) and a HMV store, which you can find anywhere in a classy, expensive looking shopping center.

But if you want to go to those "cheaper" stores :shifty: go to Mong Kong, walk around... those shops are usually better

And if you want to go to EVEN cheaper DVD stores... I suggest you go buy the fakies. Plenty of them in those Shifty Looking Malls... Just be careful of not being caught by the police or the customs thing~

A price for a DVD doesnt really go down, unless there having a sale i those real DVD CD shops... a price for a DVD is usually HK$100 and a CD around HK$88-HK$99

If you go to those DVD/CD shops in MK, be sure it's not a rental shop. If the CD is just released, see if there's a poster included. Usually, the poster in included if you give 10 more dollars.

Note: Theres also a Womans Street market in Mong Kok, if you ever go there, ALWAYS ALWAYS haggle. :brows:

Hi kaye21

I hope you have a good time in HK. What kind of shopping are you after, high-end or more bargain/cheap clothes/electronics? maybe i can try and narrow down some places for you.

For CDs/DVDs, i suggested places here: http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1784&page=47 which also have other suggestions from members.
I find Hong Kong records very pricey so I wouldn't recommend going there, HMV is ok, but I would check the other shops first as some do give away posters and other things. The last album I bought, I got a free photo booklet and behind the scenes/making of vcd which I wouldn't have got at other bigger stores.

Haggling is usually done at market stalls such as ladies market in Mong Kok, nowadays they're not so willing to haggle, but just walk away and they might call you back. In some small shopping malls, you might be able to haggle the price but not much, usually not more than 10%. Have a nice time and don't be scared to try the local food!

hi momo_j!
nice avie...you're a KSS fan too...actually im not into Highend pricey stuff...just plain old bargain goods...not pirated but more like middle class...im on a budget here...have to but for everybody...

for myself mostly CDs and clothes...for my family, mostly clothes and leather goods...

ive heard of HMV...do they accept credit cards? so if you haggle can they still accept creditcards?

im planning to buy like cds of HK artists and of course try to find JAy Stuff...and dvds of movies (most of the famous ones can be found here in the phils already...im looking for the "hard to find" or "classic cds/dvds"....

for clothes...how about particular shops that i can visit? like cool shirts...not exactly branded pricey stuff...but more like vintage-y looking...

thanks for the recommendations!

Hi Kaye

Thanks, I love KSS, it's the funniest Korean drama I've seen, it's hilarious - the karaoke part cracked me up! I digress, better not say anymore or I'll get a slap on the wrist from mods!

Ok, back on track. I found a good guide for DVDs/CDs and includes the shop I mentioned:http://www.kowloonside.com/extras/shopping/index.html
HMV accept credit cards, but all prices for CDs/DVDs in HK are fixed. You can only bargain at some small clothes stores and they usually accept credit cards.

For clothes as I was searching, I came across a place called 'Dickson Warehouse' at Kowloon Station which is an outlet selling brand named goods such as Polo, Lancel, United Colours of Benetton, Balenciaga at discount prices. From leather goods, handbags, shoes, cosmetics, accessories, seems like everything under the sun! I haven't been, it looks tempting so I think I will check it out some time and keep you posted, here's the web site: http://www.dicksoncyber.com/mall.htm

If you don't mind 2nd hand stuff, you can visit a shop called 'Milan Station' (which some people actually do mistake for a station!) which sells 2nd hand branded goods such as shoes, handbags and clothes, still quite expensive though! There are a few around HK, I recall one in Tsim Sha Tsui and Central.

Popular shops in HK with the young/sophisticated crowd are i.t and I.T. What is the difference I hear you ask?! Well, for one thing the price! i.t is catered to younger people so the prices are obviously more affordable and I.T stocks 'sophisticated labels' i.e. very expensive!! You'll find these dotted all around HK, but all hope is not lost if you're a budget conscious fashion victim because there's an I.T sale shop in TST in Silvercord Centre (Canton Rd), they're all under the same roof so you won't have to treck around so much. Another popular shop is 'izzue' which is similar to i.t, usually found alongside or nearby as they're part of the same group.

For vintage clothes, apparently there are shops called 'George & Me' in Wanchai and Central, I've never come across these so I'm not too sure. You can also try Granville Road in TST (exit B2) which sells some cheap clothing, so called 'export' shops which are really cheap and probably won't last long imo. Also Granville Circuit for vintage clothes and jeans and 'Rise Commercial Building' for local and imported ladies' fashion. I haven't been there for a very long time, so I'm not sure if anything's changed. There are so many shopping malls dotted all around HK, Mong Kok, Causeway Bay being very popular so I'm sure you'll find what you want!

Probably not what you want but you can also check out 'Shanghai Tang': www.shanghaitang.com. It'll burn a hole in your wallet, but they have some gorgeous things in there and the store in Central smells really nice! It doesn't hurt to look, just get someone to hold onto your credit card!

You'll have a fun and very tiring shopping trip! I'll keep you posted if I come across more places. Give me a shout if you need anymore help.

Hi Kaye

Sorry I didn't answer your questions earlier. Of course, feel free to pm me.
I've not heard of this shopping tour, but honestly you won't need it, you'll have more fun wandering around yourself. Don't worry, HK is easy to get around, the public transport is excellent and it's so small anyway!

There are big bookshops like PageOne, Dymocks and Swindon Books which stock mainly English books, but PageOne is pretty good and the big store in Tsim Sha Tsui has a good Chinese section too. Maybe try the local bookshops like in Mong Kok and Commercial Press which have stores in Causeway Bay, Mong Kok, Jordan and many places around HK.

Hi astro 78. Will you be visiting HK soon? The shopping centre you are looking for is apm which is in Kwun Tong, you can find more information here:

http://www.apm-millenniumcity.com/eng/index.php

it's very easy to find, exit A2 Kwun Tong station. The shops are open till midnight, restaurants till 2am and karaoke which is open till dawn. There are many shopping malls in HK. APM is quite new and you might like to go to IFC2 in central which is a more upscale shopping centre with lots of high end labels, but it's located in HK's tallest building at 88 storeys and is the 4th tallest building in the world, so just experiencing the sheer size of it is enough! :glug: It's mind boggling how they can construct these giant buildings! but i think Hk's skyline has enough of these and we don't need any more.

http://www.ifc.com.hk/english/mall.aspx

Not sure about anime stuff, but i think Mong Kok would be a good place to start. HK is a shopping mecca so have fun! oh and i would recommend taking the star ferry across what's left of the HK harbour, it's a short trip and one of the only traditional things left of HK that you can experience, even better in the evening so you can admire the view at night. If you have any more questions, i'll try my best to answer.

astro78 if you want to find anime, you could go to Mong Kok. many of the small malls will sell anime, and you might try Trendy Zone there (not very sure if there's anime stuff though). Another place is Causeway Bay Shopping Centre in Causeway Bay on Sugar Street. you can find japanese magazines, anime figurines, comics etc. there.

I think bapes and evisu-line apparel is expensive everywhere >_>
Although I do plan to look around for those brands while I'm in HK this winter regardless, hehe. Doesn't hurt to look :P

Does anyone know of any places that sells Lacoste polos at a factory/outlet price?
