Yahoo! Mail Explained

Yahoo! Mail is just like any normal email services for registered users to send files to other people. However, we can actually use Yahoo! Mail to upload and download files. We shall find out how.

The reason why I use Yahoo! Mail to upload and download files is that unlike Yahoo! Briefcase, Yahoo! Mail is more reliable and it hardly ever goes down. Also, unlike YouSendIt, the files stays permenantly.

The Yahoo! Mail has 1GB storage space and we can upload files no larger than 10MB at one time.

One main disadvantage is that everybody can access to the account storing the files and troublemakers like the noobs in the forum can just delete the files as they wish. Or they can even change the password, making the account inaccessible. Therefore I trust you all that you will not do anything to the files and the account so that other people can download the files.

How to Upload to Yahoo! Mail

Before you upload your files into Yahoo! Mail, make sure that each of the files is less than 10MB. Average mp3 files of 192kbps are usually less than 10MB. However, if you want to upload files like MVs which are more than 10MB, you will need to split up the files. You may refer to this guide (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12269) on how to split up the files with WinRAR.

Uploading the files

1. Go to Yahoo! Mail main page (http://mail.yahoo.com/?.intl=us). You will need an account to upload your files. If you want to create a new account, click Sign Up as shown in the circle.

You will be brought to this page.

*Tip:
- Use a username that tells something about your downloads, maybe artist name, album name, etc so that people will not get confused somehow.
- Choose a password that is easy to remember for people because people are signing in to download the files. For example, '123456'.
- When registering, insert the informations such as the artist name and album name as your first and last name. By doing this, it will show the artist name and album name or other informations as the sender's name in the inbox.
- Fill in informations that are easy to remember for the 'If you forget your password' section while registering. Because everybody can access to the account, one can easily change the password and make the download inaccessible to other people. To make it accessible again, you can use the informations to reset the password. So, this is just a precaution.

Note: The information you fill in for a new account does not need to be accurate, however please use a real e-mail. As far as I know, you will not recieve any e-mails besides one confirmation e-mail, but I would still recommend giving a fake junk mail account. The reason we ask you to do this is that if Yahoo decides to shut down your account for inactivity, they will always e-mail you first to confirm with you that you no longer want the account. If you gave a fake e-mail you would be unable to respond and the account would be closed and the files you uploaded, gone.

2. After you have done with registering, you'll be taken to this window. Click 'Continue to Yahoo! Mail.

To start uploading, click 'Compose' as I have circled below.

4. Click 'Browse' and select the file you wish to upload. Bear in mind that you can upload files no more than 10MB at a time. After you are done with selecting your file, click 'Attach Files'.

5. Now you just wait for it to finish uploading. The following will be shown while uploading is in progress.

When your upload is complete, click 'Continue to message'.

6. You will be taken back to the Compose page again. The files you've attached will be shown.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/spax49/yahoo%20mail/send.jpg

In the 'To' bar, insert the email address of the account that you are currently using to upload your files. In other words, you are sending to yourself. For example, if your email address is 'abcd123@yahoo.com' for this account, insert 'abcd123@yahoo.com' in the 'To' bar. As for the subject, you might want to insert the file information. After you are done with this, click 'Send'.

7. This will be shown to confirm that your message with your attachments are sent successfully.

To upload more files, click 'Compose' and repeat steps 3 to 8.

*Tip:
- If you are uploading an album, upload the tracks in reverse order. In other words, upload the last track first, then the second last track and so on, all the way to the first track which should be uploaded last. This is because when you view the inbox, the latest message will be shown at the top of the inbox. By uploading the tracks in reverse order, the tracks will be shown from the first track to the last track from top to bottom in the inbox. So, this is just to make it more convenient to download the files.
- To check whether your files have been sent to yourself successfully (in other words, uploaded successfully), click 'Check mail' or 'Back to inbox'.

8. If you have uploaded and sent the file to yourself successfully, you should see this when you go to inbox.

FAQ

Q: How much can I upload into Yahoo! Mail?
A: Yahoo! Mail provides 1GB of storage. However, each individual file cannot be larger than 10MB. To make use of the 1GB storage, you may want to upload several albums so that you will not need to create an account everytime you need to upload an album.

Q: How do I upload files larger than 10MB?
A: We use a program called WinRAR. Make sure you read the walkthrough to find out how to split up your file.

Q: How long do files stay there for?
A: Files uploaded to Yahoo! Mail are permanant, unlike YouSendIt, which keeps the files only for 7 days or 25 downloads.

Q: I'm sure that I typed the username and the password correctly but I can't access to the account to download the files. What's wrong?
A: There might be a few possibilities. The original poster might have typed either the the username or password wrongly. Another possibility is that some people like noobs in the forums change the password, making the account inaccessible for download. In these cases, inform the original poster to check with these.

Q: When I try to go into the message to download, it says "There was a problem accessing your account". What's wrong?
A: This is because you are already in the process of downloading one file from Yahoo! Mail. When you try to go back to inbox and click on another message to download the attached file, this problem will occur. So, download the files one by one.

I am proud to be the first one to thank spax for this excellently written guide and the time he spent on it, and you are all more than welcome to use it, however the only problem that the moderators have foreseen with this or any other e-mail client being used for file sharing, is simply that those clients (gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc) will not allow more than one person of a certain screenname to sign on. So basically if a hot new album comes out and you all rush to download, no one is gonna get it =/

However, still its a great guide and may have its purposes elsewhere, so spax deserves 2 thumbs up d^_^b

Yes, this was indeed a very thorough guide and I'd like to express my appreciation for spax's effort as well.

Other than what Alby's said, I think the email client also catches on fairly quickly when an email account is used excessively for file transfers. In any case, thank you for the detailed guide. :D
