Are there any Utada Hikaru fans around ??

I looked through the list of Other Artists and found only ONE link of Utada HIkaru, i clicked on it and it didnt even exist so I dont think there's many utada fans around
 *so upseting!*
Her songs are really good, she write them herself and sings it! I mean Jay sort of do the same, but she write her own lyrics too :bleh: so if you havent heard her songs yet go download "first love" and you will fall in love with it !

 *im a big fan of utada hikaru !*

my fave songs are - first love, distance, travelling, sakura drops, deep river, eternally and.....etc......

hope she will continue to write and produce albums! she's very young, 21? and married already....

I used to like Utada Hikaru A LOT...bout now I'm sorta steering towards Ayumi Hamasaki. Utada's old songs were wonderful....but her latest singles have been a lil....on the boring side...like Colors....I didn't like that very much....but I still think she's got a very unqiue and amazing voice and I love the fact that - like Jay - she can compose, write, produce, etc. her own songs. Talented girls ROCK... :excited:

I used to like her during her first love days. But she's so boring. Maybe it's cuz she married someone so old. He'll die like 20 years before she does, assuming they both live in good health.

Boring video? What about Hikari? All you see is her washing the DISHES! I mean, what is UP with that?

But I love her voice. Utada Hikaru definitely has a really great voice. She sounds gorgeous. *heart* Her recent works aren't that great though...

Does anyone else think Utada's Japanese singing is better than her English singing? Thinking of Simple and Clean... *cringe*

I didn't like Hikari and Simple and Clean at first.
But after playing Kingdom Hearts, I LOVE IT!
I guess it's like I see (or hear) it differently now after playing the game...

I like Hikaru's voice as long as she doesn't do the vibratto thing, I think she has a weak and freaky vibratto.

vashdestampede

what's vibratto?

and isn't hikki what gets left behind after a kiss on the neck? or something?

ker_ai_teresa
08-28-2003, 10:52 AM
what's vibratto?

vibratto is when singers make their voices vibrate when they hold long notes. the 'best' vibratto-ers are opera singers. their voices vibrate so much that it seems like there is a mini-quake going on inside their voice boxes. :glug:

and isn't hikki what gets left behind after a kiss on the neck? or something?

Gary > I think it is pronounced the same. XD

I like Hikaru's voice as long as she doesn't do the vibratto thing, I think she has a weak and freaky vibratto.

Cheers to that. Luckily for us, she doesn't sing vibratto a whole lot. I think it just sounds odd when she tries to hit the high notes.. and never quite.. gets there.

Still, it's undeniable that she has a great voice. I was watching this old outtakes thing with one of the guys from Hey! Hey! Hey! and she was singing to herself. Such a pretty voice. *_*

Does anyone else think Utada's Japanese singing is better than her English singing? Thinking of Simple and Clean... *cringe*

apparently one of the reasons for that clip was because hikki got too popular for her videos, and she wanted ppl to focus/remember her music. Also it was her first single after marriage so maybe something to do with her becoming 'more domestic'??
lol, my friend's little brother came up with a theory that since the hikari means light, hikki was washing the dishes with care so as to 'create light within the room' or sth like that...

i thought hikki (half?) grew up in america? thats why her english is so good, especially in comparison to other jap singers....

GaryDAI

i think currently she's working on her english debut album, which is targeted for a release early next year. personally i support her all the way. i think she has the talent and the skills to hit it big in the US. she's no stranger to the english language at least, columbia and all. but do you think she'll make it? i mean look at all the other asians in the past who tried in the US market. they failed miserablly. examples include coco lee, innerlude, innervoices, and the group Ming-Na started called "At Last". i'm sure there's plenty more. but personally, i hope her name doesnt make it onto the list. she must succeed.

i don't remember but much but anyway, i was at this offical anime site, anyway i was lookin up in the forum, on was jpop, went in there and people start sayin they like Hikaru Utada music then one person have a screenname Hikaru Utada who post something like that she was gonna have a new cd etc. and another person was like saying that she wasn't the real Hikaru Utada and for all we know she can be a wannbe. but i checked her profile was sayin her real name and year born and stuff except that person only just become a memeber for few weeks. So i coulda been the real Hikaru Utada or not.hehe

Coco Lee's songs were never too original and I thought her voice was too thin. I'm not a really big fan of Utada but her songs were better than Coco's. Out of all of Coco's songs, I can honestly say I like maybe 4 of them, and they're all ballads.

hey, that's pretty cool! the only full english track i've heard from hikki is the "blow my whistle" song from the rush hour 2 soundtrack. but she has a lot of english in her jap. songs as well and she sounds pretty good. i like quite a few of her songs, my fave being "first love". well, guess i'll check out her english songs when her album's released.

as for coco, i heard some stuff from her debut english album. i found most of the songs very similar, so didn't really interest me. i like the ballads more. i think one track is on the soundtrack album for runaway bride. i've only listened to a few of her chinese songs, like the mulan track and the crouching tiger, hidden dragon track. but one song i would recommend is coco's duet with julio iglesias "when you tell me that you love me". it's a very nice ballad.

Someone correct me if im wrong...but i believe that she lived in the US when she was younger, grew up here and then moved back to japan...she did also attend Columbia College later on...but dropped out after the first year or so i think...(for what reason i do not know)

I think she lived in new york, i heard she went to UCLA, but i could be wrong. Well yeah... she did drop out like on her first year. Well i'm sure her cd will be good. I'm definatly going to buy it.

Thanks for the info!

Ooo..I've been waiting for Utada to have her American release too! ^_- I just know that this will be really good! The only English song I've heard is "Simple and Clean"...I'm sure everyone has heard of that before, right? Hmm...finally, a talented Asian artist to hit the US scene!!! SCORE! Well, I know there was Coco Lee..but she wasn't very successful..hopefully people will like Utada!!! :)

i think it was coco lee that when to ucla.

hikaru utada has other english songs but mostly covers, like: fly me to the moon, loving you, with or without you, and no woman no cry. some other ones too. i cant think of the names

Hmm... Honestly I don't think this album will do very well... In america the only song I really heard was Hikari & Simple and Clean... And that's because I played Kingdom Hearts for a while... Other then that most people won't have a clue who she is... Not that I don't want her to be successful... I'd love it to finally see americans noticing that they aren't the only ones who can extend their music into other countries with great success... ;p

the album isnt targeted at american...it is simply an english album..for fans to see how her english is...if it proves to be any good...then they may try a wider scale...to maybe ppl outside the asian community..as for right now...im sure they are still targeting the asian community only

Utada Hikaru.... I heard she's going to change her name to Hikaru Utada, in order to get ready for her english debut. But either way, she IS my favorite female artist. I've been following her music since her first love album came out. I have to say, her music DID change. It's not as hip hop or r n b as it used to be, but more towards the traditional J-POP. However, I don't think her music is changing for the worse, because it's her style that is changing. True, I did expect more rnB when Deep river came out, but after a while, I grew into her music, if you know what I mean. I can barely get tired of her music. Every song has its special feeling behind it.

Hikki did have ovary tumor, not cancer. She turned out ok after rehab, and then she did the Deep River album.

If they listened to her and didn't like her why would they give her another shot. I don't see her album being very succesful :/

Both her and Park Jung Hyun can speak english fluently. Maybe Park Jung Hyun will follow, but I doubt it.

heh i dunno about park jung hyun...but i think america wont think very highly of her cd....her english probably need to gain a base in the asian community first b4 it can even try to shot for american, or other non-asian audiences...Despite how good her english is...it wont be easy for her...just like coco...who grew up in america...like utada...her first english cd crashed and burned...well jus hafta wait to see what utada can do...

personally i think she stand a much better chance than coco...b/c of her stronger and more flexible voice...ive heard her sing "with or without u"...and i like it a lot...hope she can do the same in the english album

Park Jung Hyun isn't that popular but she's still somewhat up there. Her voice is really strong though. Reminds me a alittle of Mariah Carey.

*gasp* Cancer?? I thought that was 'Mui Yen Fong' (is in another thread)? :(
I luv her 'First Love' song only coz' her songs are indeed, quite fast. And i heard that she wrote that 'First Love' song when she was 16 or 18? I quite like her voice when she's singing.
I've heard she's got a baby/kid but as for marrying an old man??... 0_0*.... Well... in my opinion- i think age doesn't matter as long as they both luv each other. She must've luv her hubby that much to marry, born a child and be with him. Right?

1. Tumor not cancer. got it removed 2 or 3 years ago.
2. did not get married because she was pregnant. she said she "couldnt wait to have kids now that she's married.'
3. rumored to work on the music on husband's animated movie "CASSHERN".
4. american debut: early 2004 with island def jam.

I used to REALLY love Hikki after she released her first album. The song "First Love" really desribed my feelings right THEN. I could totally relate to it. I cried the first few times I listened to it. After that I also started to like "Automatic" and the rest of the songs from that album. I like the R&B feel.

I bought her "Cubic U - Precious" album and was even more impressed. She did that when she was even younger? I was like, WOW... All great English R&B songs.

However, I was a little disappointed with the second album. It was a little boring compared to the first and the English one. Also, it wasn't so R&B anymore, but more towards J-Pop, and I never liked J-Pop or even mainstream Pop in general.

Her third album, uh... It was not only boring, but depressing as well. I got so sick of it I sold it off on eBay. I couldn't stand it. I was utterly disappointed.

I don't think I'll buy her fourth album.

As for Ayumi, all her songs are more fast-paced dance track. It's nice the first time I listen to her songs, but after a few songs, I can't differentiate her songs anymore. They all sound the same.

To compare, I'd still say Hikki is more talented.

what's the difference between 'distance' and 'final distance'¿

they both contain the same lyrics except Distance is the original version which is more upbeat whereas Final Distance is the slower, sadder-sounding version, released in her Deep River album. personally i prefer Final D.

always prefered Hikki over Ayumi, not sure why, maybe it's because I found Hikki's music about a year or two before Ayumi's, or maybe it's because Ayumi's voice almost gets annoying sometimes. Either way, have to love both of them (and yes, Ayumi is the queen, Hikki's the princess)

When I saw the video where she was just washing dishes, I was sort of annoyed that I bothered to download it, but when I showed it to one of my friends, he really liked it...not sure if he's just into the housekeeping image of a woman or liked how simple it was.

the Travelling video just freaked me out though o_o

Source: http://hikaru-online.net/ (more info found there)
According to the Yomiuri Online, Hikaru's English album will be released next spring. She will debut under the name "UTADA," as was requested by Hikaru. Universal Music Group made this announcement regarding Hikaru's debut on the 31st of October. According to this source, Hikaru is currently recording in both Tokyo and New York.

In addition, SANSPO.COM states that the reason behind the name change to "UTADA" was due largely to Hikaru's insistance that "UTADA" would be much easier and simpler to pronounce in English.

not that it matters. just wanted to share. her new promotional image is in my avatar.

i'm excited about her album coming out. i think since utada hikaru writes/composes her own songs, the style would not change that much from her japanese albums. i didn't really like coco's album because it seemed too americanized, so it'll be cool to hear more music with an asian style sung in english. utada hikaru's been working on this album for a while i think because i heard about it years ago, but she kept putting it off to concentrate on school.

i've been waiting for months for this album to come out so i hope hikki does well.
she hasn't done anything in japan for the past 10months or so to concentrate on this debut right?

i read somewhere awhile ago where hikki said her english music would be a different style from her jap stuff, and told her fans not to expect just english versions of her jap songs, or sth like that. there was talk of her debut song being a collaboration with a well known rap artist too i think, but i hope not. :bleh:
i hope it's not like the "blow my whistle" song, coz even tho its catchy, those kind of songs are what encouraged me to listen to non-english R&B music...

btw, she didn't drop out of columbia to concentrate on being a wife did she..?

if you go to www.islandrecords.com she's in their list of artists as hikaru utada, but no pic or info on her at all, that i can be bothered finding anyways

yay! rather rare to see hikki being discussed in a forum like this, to be frank. hikki is very talented. i like her songs and way of writing lyrics. i bought her 'Deep River' album and 'COLORS' single. i just love her works and lyrics. it all makes a lot of sense and everything just sinks into your mind. her voice is refreshing too.

yeah, she married an old guy = director of her videos. :D at first some of her fans couldn't accept it (i think they were from japan), they were quite unhappy about hikki's decision. but i think everyone kinda got over it already. since hikki is happy with him, i think people, as fans, should also learn to accept the truth.

Oh really? So, those songs are actually a trilogy...WOW...never knew about that....What's the trilogy about? In Final Distance I get an impression that she is being separated with her love one...and I haven't seen Travelling MV and I've just only seen a small part of Sakura Drops. But the songs are great. :)

By the way, I just can't understand why she marries so fast. She is just 20 years old...Futhermore, she is married to her director, who are 40 years old....Ow....She is such a hot prospect for Japan's Entertainment. I think love at the first sight is only an 'early force of attraction' that happens between both partners. Mostly that happens because of physical attraction. Well...I believe in love at a deeper look.

But as you says, if she's happy then that's alright. That's her life and her decision.

although i'm not as into mainstream pop as R&B either, i have to say deep river is my fave hikki album so far, the sound is just more mature than the others, although first love album is a close second.

her record company, island def jam records, just bought 2 websites for her, although last time i checked nothing was up yet, adn her management co bought utada.net, i think it's official that she's going to go under the name utada, without hikaru.

if anyone is interested, a journalist has listed all the reasons why she believes utada will succeed in usa, you can check in articles sections of this site http://hikaru-online.net/

if you're too lazy (like me usually), her basic points are:

1) utada speaks english fluently and has more credibility since she grew up in new york
2) she has many achievements that no other asian artist has (first asian on mtv unplugged, highest selling jap album of all time for first love)
3) utada already has a huge international fan base
4) she has a different record co. to her one in japan, also a different name, thus allowing her to begin and maintain a different career to her jap one, if she wants to
5) she is having huge amounts of money and energy poured into her promotions, with universal records giving utada her own promotions team (mariah carey only other artist to have this done)

i hope she does do well, her voice and music is good enough on its own imo. her album is scheduled for a (usa) spring release, 2004

i'm REALLY hoping that she makes it big here, its about time we had some asian representation in the US and utada is the one to do it.
shes talented, pretty, and she was born in NY i believe and speaks fluent english.
haha, all of you are saying her hubby is so old, hes not 40, they have a 15 year age difference i think.
i honestly dont care how old he is, as long as theyre happy together. i hope they last forever. ^_^

Whoa! That's a good exposure for her! :excited: It would hopefully, make listeners of that album look forward for her English album release.

it would have been much better if that compilation has more asian artists. But that's a whole new discussion.

Wow, that's great news! I wonder how the song will turn out.

hmm, I kind of find it weird too that the music isn't more international.. since it is called "Unity" and everything. It's supposed to be worldwide, right??

wow... finally an asian breaking into mainstream in the US. i hope she does well :)... but i found it kinda weird cuz isn't island def jam like a rap-ish kinda label? does that mean a bunch of her songs are gonna be that kind of genre?

sabriel
05-31-2004, 12:49 AM
island def jam also has a variety of rock bands such as: thrusday, the killers, hoobastank.
utada has done a bit of everything so far. rnb, rock, and pop. speculations.
there as been a bunch of other asian artist trying to break into the mainstream: Puffy a Ayumi (sings the TEEN TITAN theme song). and i think koda Kumi has an album too.

i just think utada is gonna be the first with the biggest exposure.

Utada is a bit like our very own Jay Chou, she combines many variety into her music, though she doesn't make it as "solid" as Jay does for his songs. It still however has various elements that you can say is r&b, pop, or a little bit of rock etc.

I can't wait to get her album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only 2 more days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bounce: IMO, I'm a bit worried for her "success" in America. I haven't heard anything about her on the radio or seen her music video! Hopefully once her album hits the shelves there will be more exposure for her once people start to explore.

Ok, I love Koda Kumi. But bad english isn't going to get far in the english music industry, especially to the public who haven't heard of her before.

Hikaru Utada won't make it big.
She's got a nice voice, yes.
Her English is good, yes.

But this gal won't make it in America, because here in the States, we want our music video gals to do more than wash dishes for 5 fucking minutes. Hikaru Utada's Hikari = worst music video EVER MADE.

watched her latest video, Easy breezy.. cute song, got it playing in my mind for quite some time.... BUT!!! i don't get it why they insist on using: Japaneseee just so it could rhyme with Breezy..... hehehe.. oh well... i do hope Hikaru would do great in the US music industry! Ü

***she looked very mature in her video, maybe cos of the ultra red make-up... hehe.. she looked a bit changed wearing that makeup.. but when she don't have make-up on... she looks the same.

Yahoo! I am totally supporting her... I just got the album, and trust me it sounds better on the CD than listening on stream online, even though with ultrafast downloading. You have to look at it as a whole, and please dun get serious with her playful lyrics in some of them... they do sound awkward, but I think it somewhat applies to some people in here. If you just downloading random songs from her new album you won't have a complete feeling about it! My recommandation for the number 1 song on this album is Exodus... totally gets the soul of Exodus, and I wonder why Timbaland was not thinking about producing it until much later~~

DUN COMPARE THIS TO THE OLD HIKKI, AND HER OLD STYLE... please! I do agree the packaging on her was over-done, as in the make ups and clothing style... and I found it surprising enough that her stylists for the album are Japanese... I dunno why they would choose such a geisha make up on her~~ in the bad way~~ >.< But ignore the image, and try a few songs!

when i first listened to Easy breezy, i didn't think the song was THAT good, compared to her japanese songs like Automatic, mainly coz of the "japanesee" was so lame. but the song eventually grew on me so itz alright...however i dun like her style on the MV...her make up is too much, especially the red shiny lip gloss. they should tone it down a bit.
BUt then, again, a big shot to the US, good luck man! and congratz being in the Teen People magazine...i'm so impressed~!

from what i've heard, her album hasn't been doing too well in the states. poor hikki. i think she tried to adapt a new style with exodus, but in the end it didn't really work out for her. however, the album's been quite popular in japan.

:-) yay i finally got the cd,( yea i know one month late, lol,) anyway, it seem okay, though like the first half of the cd's songs seem a bit weird like they should be more upbeat, is it me or it seem like the songs get better each time as the cd ends. oh well i guess i like it better when is not in english or at least competely in english. hehe.

awww really? i really like her english album! granted i had to listen to it a couple of times before i started liking in but i really like the beats and rhythms... i think i should really try to listen to her jap stuff tho.. i've tried to before but its not as fresh IMHO as the english album... and despite the fact that in Easy Breezy there's that lyric 'ur easy breezy and i'm japanesey' i really like that song! (cringed a couple times but now i'm so used to it) and some of her lyrics are very meaningful... not that i know much but i've read some pretty intensive analysises of her songs (from the utada forums) and they seem to make alot of sense lol.. not that i would have caught on if it wasn't pointed out to me

Ditto to kamui's statement...

:D Easy Breezy did gave me quite an uneasy time... but honestly she did a GOood album arrangement that ease the uneasiness caused by Easy Breezy... (my tougue started to twist) Before Easy Breezy in the album it was "The Workout." It ends with an abrupt ending... then 2 secs later the breeze sound from Easy Breezy came into your ears. What I mean is the Easy Breezy gave the listeners a break from the upbeat and loudness from the Workout...

ToT But I think I lot of people got kinda p.i.s.s.e.d with the Easy Breezy lyrics, so they sorta ditched her album as a whole~~ Noooooo... You can't judge the album by one song~~ or several songs that you've downloaded with incomplete track-to-track coherence~~

HarmonyCloud
01-26-2005, 10:58 PM
Yes, I will admit, at first I didn't like Easy Breezy. The Japanesey thing kinda through me off, but then I kinda started to like it. And I agree You CAN'T judge an album by one song, I hope everyone enjoyed the Easy Breezy Video.

I prefer her Japanese albums, some reason they're better then her english albums
The only songs i really like on her new album is easy breezy and exodus '04, after a while the other songs aren't as good after a few listens......mayb it's because of the lyrics......
but then thats prob wats good bout her jap songs....... i can't understand wat she's saying and the few english lines thrown in are prob wat make it good :D

it's also got the screenshots there if u click onto the easy breezy link
he also directed a movie that she sang a song 4, and her husband also directed some of her clips
she's been married over 2 years now so dun look like a temp marraige

look at celine dion she married her manager and his like 20 years older then her
sep his really sweet, he really believed in her and all, sold 2 house, or mortaged them both to put up the money to help her get her album out there and promote her.......true love, and they're still together, must be like 10 years now, cause she had a baby in like 2000

so dunno bout utada if her marriage is serious, just have to wait and c

take a look at the article, it has a bit more info on her if ur interested

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A31175-2004Oct13.html

I think theres also a thing bout people thinking that all utada is concerned about is making money......cause when she released her singles collection......usually people who release a best of their work...they add a bonus new song.........on a web site, people were commenting on how it looked like it was thrown together in 5 mins....
and how she re did Distance to become Final Distance to commemorate the tragic accident where the little kids died.......people say that was also to make more money cause 1/ she only changed 1 line of the song at the end and the song is slower thats all.......
2/the single Final distance people asked that how come the whole single was dedicated to the kids instead of just the 1 song.......3/ and they also question that if it was really 4 the little kids how come the profits 4 that single wasn't donated to charity or something.......
in the end it was her who profited.........

so i dunno wat do u all think

She just bowls me over.
I think among all the Japanese female singers,
she is one of the best if not THE best,
besides Ayumi Hamasaki and Namie Amuro.
I fell in love  with her first smash hit,
FIRST LOVE
I was also amazed at how she transformed herself
into something refreshing, sexier than the usual
but I find her transformation a little bit awkward.
I love her original image. :excited:
She's more of a darling back then. :wink2:
But still,her EXODUS is worthwhile.

I love Utada!!! >< But her album "Exodus" wasn't very that good. I liked it better when she only sung Japanese. Some of the songs on Exodus are ok though. My favourite is Kremlin Dusk. In her Japanese albums, the lyrics are really good and the tunes are great! I have so many favourites. We all know Utada Hikaru is the main singer for the game Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. This how we know her.. Simple and Clean PLANTb Remix, Simple and Clean, or Hikaru, and Passion or Sanctuary.

Great game.. Fanatic 2.. XP

yeah... heard Utada first through kingdom of hearts... and then I asked my japanese friends if they knew Utada... and they just stared at me...
her songs are awesome... though I don't listen to much Jpop... so I can't compare... except that I like her better than Ayumi Hamasaki... that is at least the two Ayumi Songs I've heard... that came in the Inuyasha CD...
but I didn't really understand her "passion" video...
what's with the horses in the end... I guess maybe something about being free or something... since nothing had to do w/ horses in any other part of the video?
anyways... do you guys know if there's going to be a KH III... and if there is one... more from Utada?
I'm getting a bit ahead of myself...

i adore utada. first love is like my favorite japanese song. she captures the bittersweetness of that first love and the hurt and sweetness of it all in her voice.

i <3 utada.
she sings so darn well...
ok, ok, i admit i've only heard a few of her songs- namely, exodus and first love...
but they totally caught my attention, and i got obsessed with them.
her powerful vocals and emotion in the songs...
wow.

Oh goodness,Utada Hikaru is an awesome singer that many americans will probably never get to know because asian entertainers are still not fully accepted into the mainstream.

I absolutely love her song So Simple & Clean from Kingdom Hearts & her hits like First Love & Sanctuary from Kingdom Hearts 2.I can't wait to hear what theme song she wrote & produced for KH3.^^

Aww...did anyone hear how she got a divorce late last month. I think it's pretty sad considering she's been with her (ex) husband for about 4 years. I kinda thought the 15 year age gap would've been a bit of a problem later in life when you have different thoughts of where you want to be in life.

oooh that is super sad. wasnt her (ex) husband her manager? but its not suprising though because they were having issues when Utada released her english album like 2 years back. something about Utada doesnt wanna have a kid yet but he wants one. therefore playing into what youo said about the age gap. wells best of luck to Utada, and i hope she makes another album soon

She's my favorite Japanese (and perhaps worldwide) singer. Though I love her English album, I became a fan because of 'first love', such a beautiful song.

It's indeed too bad she hasn't become popular in mainstream outside of Asia. I think she blows away most young American singers of nowadays.

First love. Haha. XD That was once my favourite too!

But her style now is more of a Hip Hop.

I like Prisoner of Love, Beautiful World and Flavor of Life. (I personally really like Beautiful World alot. XD)
