OK........so i have a dilemma.......

How do you get your parents to listen to Jay?

I put the Ye Hui Mei CD.......and played track no.3 and then no.5......which i believe is the best/most suited to listen in front of my parents......[like if i play no. 2 which is so rock....they would kill me  ]

and then my mom just went over to the CD player and stopped it :-x and told me to listen to this "bun sun" in my own time

usu. i listen when i do homework or when they are out i put it on full blast......

does anyone have the same problem? :glug:

nope, actually i put Ye Hui Mei on repeat mode so often that my dad can hum along with "In the Name of the Father". He kinds of like it, i can tell :shifty:

I have a question: why do you need to get your parents to listen to Jay?

There was this day when me and my cousin put YHM in the cd player and started playing it... My mum was like, 'Who's that?' and when we told her, she said 'Oh, that Zhou Jie Lun huh...' cos he's like everywhere on tv. And she thought it was not bad. Don't blast it too loud, just play it slightly softer like background music, people will start paying attention to it if it's nice.

I agree with aDrena.. why would you want your parents to accept your music? We already know they're still stuck in the past generation.. ;D I've accepted the fact that they won't accept our music. But my parents do think Jay is pretty cool since they read about him in the Chinese papers.

I try to play Jay CDs and VCD every time I'm with my mom coz i think my mom would say " Oh What a nice song ! " but everytime my mom says " Oh I can't understand it so plz stop it !" and my sister says " How many time u play Jay's CDs ? I wanna listen to the other artist " sign... :depresse:

if i have the CD on my dad's car i just ask "daaadd can we listen to jaaaayy?" and he says "sure!" and he plays it. but i don't think he really pays attention to it -__-; my dad just listens to whatever's "hip" right now. he even tried to act like machi the other day and made the machi sign with his hand. ;adkfadf he's so weird

Wellpz, my mom only likes Jay's slow, ballad or upbeat songs , like Jian Dan Ai. She gets annoyed whenever i play Jay's fast rap songz  Soo, yah i dun thnk she will ever "accept" Jay's fast songs and punk-ish songs like Nuo Fu (which i loove!)
But as for my dad, whenever i play the Ye Hui Mei cd in my room, he walks in and goes.."so this is Jay's new cd?" (yepp) "not bad/pretty good!" or sumthing like that! :) :excited: He on the other hand, likes Jays rap songs like, Shuang Jie Gun! But of course, he only listens to snippits of jays songs..
I dunno how to get my parents to actually listen to jay.. but i guess it doesnt matter that much as long as they let ME listen! hehe :D

nah, i dun like it if my parents like wat i listen to...it freaks me out!! just like wen my mum started watching meteor garden....i was kinda scared, so i dun try to get my parents to get into my music. my dad doesn't like anything i listen to, so its ok. but i think if i really wanted to, i could get her to like any of my music.

I told my mom to listen to Dong Feng Po because I thought she might like it with the pipa and all. And she did like it, I think it's her favorite Jay song now. But she doesn't like songs like Nuo Fu (it's "messed up" according to her).

I think my parents like peaceful ballads more. I catch them humming along sometimes. And I always play Jay on the car. They never admit it, but I think they secretly like his songs.

The best way probably is..puting it in your car's cd player lol!! thats wat i do when i want to listen to my music. I just put it in and force them to listen Jay with me :D wahha

Its even better if you sit in the front then you have complete control (well nearly..also the driver o_O) over the player !

I told my mom to listen to Dong Feng Po because I thought she might like it with the pipa and all.
My mum walked into the room during the instrumental bit and thought it was one of her CDs!

I try to get my parents to listen to Jay as much as possible so they understand why i listen to him so much..and the best way for me is putting the CD in the car stereo when i am in the passenger seat at the front. That way i can pick which one they hear (Tornado..good....nunchuks bad...Broken Wings good...Coward..very very bad...)
Its just like the other day, my dad picked up the Fantasy Album and asked all confused 'Nunchuks? He sang that? I thought he was all ballads...'

And i catch my mum humming along to Cant Speak all the time. My dad sings Tornado when he thinks hes in the kitchen by himself!

My parents dun realli mind much... although they find dat I'm 2 crazy over jay but they kinda took it as I'm undergoing some adolescence phase. They find jay's music abit on e extreme side though.. but now, whenever jay appear on some magazine, they wld inform me, my dad wld say, " ur beloved boyfren is on 'you' weekly again liaoz." haha... dey kind of refer to jay chou as my bf, heehee, i luv it dat way... moz of all, since i've listened to jay's music, my chinese had improved by TWO grades!! from a juz pass C6 or failed D7 to a B4!! all his lyrics veri relavent to my chi syllabus... Normalli I try to study very hard 4 chi n onli remember 1 or 2 words, but now whenever got any words dat appear on his lyrics, I'll remember by heart... and i'll even noe how to apply 'em in my compo, even my teacher is impressed by my sudden interest in chi... haha.. if my chi teacher noe how to rap all e chi lessons like jay, I sure get A1... If jay bcumz my teacher, i'll surely get full markz..

i just sort of force them to listen to his cds everytime i have control over what cd is to be played. when my mum starts picking on the tiny little things she doesnt like in the songs (like the repeated piano part in ti tian b4 he sings: she says he played the wrong note and was too lazy to change it  ), i'll just say it's my fav song n tell her not to comment on it for a moment, forcing her to listen to it. once, i was so irritated that i turned the volume up to drown her voice n ignore what she was saying.

i know that a way to make your parents listen to him will be to just play it many times in a place where they will definitely hear it, and not ask them for their opinions. slowly, they will like the songs, though they might not tell you so...

But last time, I asked my dad if I could bring a CD from Jay in his car to listen, he said OK. Can you imagine that?! MY DAD SAID YES TO JAY!!!

I tried really hard to get them to listen to Jay. I always put the TV in my living room on MTV Asia, while Jay is the AotM this August. Everytime I see Jay, I would go "Awk... mom, this is the guy that I like!!!" But my mom complained that I should listen to more gospel songs, than Jay's music.

My Dad had listen to all Jay's songs ( I usually put it in the car), but my dad didn't actually give the slightest comment. He only said that from the day he was young until now, he can never enjoy Chinese music. He's stuck with The Beatles, ABBA, and the Bee Gees. Aaarghz... parents!!!

We can never share the same music interests with our parents. Or if it happens, it's very rare, though.

I think the only way for me is to superglue the earphones in their ears... and even then, they'll probably find a way out of listening to his music

But seriously why would you want your parents to listen to him? Like xiaojie said, its really freaky if your parents liked the same stuff you did... Like imagine if my dad started looking at porn!

like what QB said...why would i want my parents to like J's music for?
the freaky thing isn't them being converted to jayism, it's the thought of them becoming so obsessed that they came and joined this forum!!!!   imagine that!! your parents here!!!!
har har har!! discussing things like J's kissing and going gah-gah over his pics! :lolabove:

hmm...i prolly wouldn't be laughing if that were to happen...

Umm..Nice topic! :)
One day while i was playing Jay's CD.(i couldn't remember which song i played but it must be a fast hiphop or rap song) and she said "What is that crazy song?! i don't understand a word! (usaully i listen to English songs and the only asian singer i listen to is Utada Hikaru and she knew that) And i went "Hey mom,he's a King of HipHop,R&B singer in Taiwan. And he's great!! :bleh: " and my mom just..  Till today,i still play Jay'cd in the morning everyday so everyone can hear it.

Get parents to like Jay? That's like never. Especially if u got parents that are way too traditional and only listens to old stuff. And like someone said before, it's quite freaky if your parents like the same stuff as yours. But before thinking about HOW to make your parents LIKE Jay, I think it's best to think how to stop them from bagging him out first. If you can do that, then it's a whole new improvement.
My dad bags him out time and again, ALL THE FRIGGING TIME and it's getting on my nerves.
He says, "Just watch for another few 10 or 20 years. By then. all your favourite singers won't be known and noone will listen to their songs. Just look at the singers of our time. People are still listening to them because their stuff is not rubbish."

Guess how I shut him up? I placed on the new album of his favourite singer, Zhou Huei, (check her out in PARTNERS. She's the woman who saing in Taiwanese and have a very 60's style song) and wait till he starts singing along with the song before telling him that the song was made by Jay.

Usually I play it in the car whenever I'm riding in the car with my parents, so they listen to him then. Other times would be like when I'm watching HK award shows or something, and they see him perform! Other than that, the only time they'd listen to Jay is when I'm blasting it in my room...haha!! :)

I think after ALL the times I've acted crazy because of Jay (like seeing him on TV), they've started getting used to the fact that I like him LOADS...so everytime they see Jay or hear him, they usually play along with me...hehe itz kinda funny....they'll be like "But what about Jay" or "Only Jay is good enough for YOU!". I like it though, cause they can be more supportive - ummm, emotionally and financially - when I buy Jay stuff...

If he comes up on TV, they would shout "Jess, your Jays on TV" and then just put up with me singing along... They used to keep saying how ugly he is but they know that i dont care so they just wait for him to finish...
Im sure they like his music too, they just dont want to admit it...

I let my mum listen to "Dad, i'm back". She only like the chorus part.
i also showed my mum the "Zhou Ri Ba Dian Dang" clip (Jay sick clip), G-music "Wu Yu Lun Bi" clip, Hong Ren Show, TVBS clip and those shows with Jay. My mum loves to watch them... :yeah: and she will comment, "哇!杰倫很厉害咧!真是音乐天才!" (Wah, Jay is very good! He's a music genius!" :excited:

I have a question: why do you need to get your parents to listen to Jay?
i get my mum to listen to him because i wanted her to know what i like. :yeah: The response was good so far, and she will inform me when Jay is on TV! :excited:

Erm..well since i dont know how to read and write chinese characters so i don't really understand what Jay's songs mean....So,i'll take this opportunity to get my mom to listen to his songs with the excuse that i need her to tell me the meaning of Jay's songs.Well my mom always wants me to learn and understand more chinese words..that's why she'll listen to the songs and explain them to me altho' I do understand the meaning of some of Jay's songs, well thanks to the traslation and pin yin..hehe.But anyway, i still managed to get her to listen to Jay's songs.Well, she doesn't like his songs and she doesn't hate them either ( i think she still prefer Lin Dai and all those singers back in the 50s and 60s). And she's so happy that i started listening to mandarin songs which i didn't like a few years back!

i dun think i really care whether or not my parents listen to him or not. i just play the music i wanna listen to, and if they dun like it, well, they can choose just not to listen to it. my parents dun really care what i listen to. but since i think jay is so good, sometimes i will ask my mom to listen to a couple of songs, n ill ask her to tell me what i think. like, my mom really likes yi fu zhi ming, qing tian, and some of the other slower songs. and when she hears the rock type stuff, she understands thats some of the music that this generation listens to and if she doesnt like it, well she doesnt care. my mom says jay overall is reallly good and the only thing she doesnt like about him is his mumbling, cuz she says she cant understand parts of his songs cuz he mumbles.

or i will play his vcd with the music video and let my family member watch for it,jay's mv is very great, really spend alot of time on it and it s nice, just like watching movie,ahaha.a....sure this also can make my family members an my others fren like him~~:P:p

My parents don't know, either.
I live alone now.
When I sometimes go back to my parents house, I listen to Jay when my father is sleeping.
At first, in small volume, and as his sleep does deeper, I turn volume bigger and bigger.
Maybe he does sleeping learning.

I guess I'm lucky, huh? My mom doesn't care what I listen to. In fact, we normally have the same taste anyways... She's really cool. :) She might not think Jay is handsome (neither do I), but she thinks he's cool. Hehe...

It really depends on your parents. You can't exactly force them to listen to something they can't accept. But maybe if you can show them you're benefiting from listening to Jay's song, e.g. learn Chinese if you're a banana, then they might change their minds.

I put the Ye Hui Mei Cd in the car for a long time........then i switched to another Jay cd....but there were NEVER any other CD's to switch to in the car....there was only ONE cd......and then after about 2 months of brain washing......then..hehe, i would switch to some boring cd.....and parents eventually said......."um....can we get the Jay back in the car?" and i was like "the Jay cd? oh....you actually want it back?" and ......yeah, so that's how i did it. so now i get to listen to Jay everyday in the car.

I have a question: why do you need to get your parents to listen to Jay?

So my mom will buy me his CDs when I ask her to. I mean, come on guys, why ELSE would you want your parents to at least think Jay's a decent singer? XD!

The easiest way for me to get my mom to like musicians is to play their songs as often as possible, especially in the car. I just pop it in the CD player and she has no choice but to listen to it. Me and my mom generally have similar tastes anyway, so it's usually not a huge problem.

If all else fails, I just find a song Jay has that has a 'classic' quality to it, which ensures that she can't really tell whether it's an old song or a new one. :shifty:

haha! My mom like Dong Feng Po a lot.. because of the backgrd music using chinese orchestral instruments.. Then she asked me: Who is this singing? " zhou jie lun lor" i replied and she gave the stunned look!? " ar? hu is he? " ... then i say : " he is like fei yu qing during ur generation" ! Hahahah then she burst out laughing, but she praises Jay's qing tian and dong feng Po! :excited: Wow! his singings rocks!

Wow! Good for those whose parents are willing to listen to Jay's songs and actually like them! Im so helpless in getting my parents to do it instead of insulting him all the time. Whenever they ask me what keeps me stuck to my discman all the time. I would say 'Zhou Jie Lun' Then they would snort and give a disapproving look. My dad once even said he sounds like he's chanting scriptures. GRRRR! Btw, the reason i want them to listen to Jay's song is because i want them to realise the beauty of his songs and maybe it could erm.. help them according to their emotions at a point of time?! Haha.. The previous sentence sounds weird. I just dont know how to phrase it. Anyway, i really hope i would succeed one day! :)

my dad likes Jay's music!!! ^_^ and i think he even influenced my mom into liking him too. because he'd always ask for the YHM album and listen to it all day while on the road. he says jay is a great musician!

i dont blast my music no matter how nice the song is.i guess its just an habit.i wont want to disturb my parents or brother with the music i listen.similarly,i hope they dont do that to me!=) but anyway,my parents are ok with the songs i listen.although they are not a fan of jay,i do let me listen to him.sometimes,i'll ask my mom to come and listen to this pariticular jay song and i'll ask her for opinions about the song.usually its the same answer--> nice tune, not very nice lyrics!hahas..but other than that,my parents are pretty ok with jay!=)

When i am listening to jay's cds or watching the vcds, i will ask my mum to come and sit down and listen/watch too. Sometimes she will but most of the times she will say: u listen la, i got things to do.. =(

But there is this time she sat with me throughout the incomparable live vcd. Oh i didn't ask her how she find the music but man, she must have enjoyed the vcd. haha. if not she would have walked off..

I did the same to my dad, but his response is like: he's your idol not mine.

Haha..but there is no escape for my parents.. cos me and my siblings(4 of us) all listen to Jay and at any one point of time, jay can be heard in the different rooms at home. not forgetting the hi-fi set in the living room too! Kekekeke..

well, one day, i just play jay's cd loud in the living room because i thought i was home alone
but my parents suddenly came home and when they walk in hearing jay singing, they didn't like it at first, but after a few more times, they actually grew to like jay's style of music

I just play his music most of the time ether in my room or the living room and deliberately let my parents hear his music. However, I do not really blast the music loudly. Over time, my parents were kind of interested as they just cannot seem to figure out what the songs are singing about. I will then introduce them to the lyrics. After some time, they actually grew more used to his music.

funny that you're trying to get your parents to like jay.
perhaps i'm a spoiled child. they listen to what i want to listen to.
my mom ends up liking jay's slow songs. my dad doesnt mind at all.
they usually hear it blasting loudly from my room. :D

orrr.. if they're not acceptingg, maybe you can try to pop the cd in
while you're driving (if you guys drive at all?) and listen to it.

at first, my parents were like "what the heck is he saying!?!?" "he mumbles too much" "he's not even that good looking!" but just recently, like a month ago, my mom and i were in the car and i popped in jay's cd. My mom was like "wow...all of his songs are really good!! i like them!" and i told her that he composes all of his songs and stuff. That night, my mom jacked my cd player and jacked my cd's and lyrics. She was like "wow....these lyrics are really really nice!!" ahahha and that weekend my mom and I sat down and watched his mv's! ^^ She dragged my dad in to watch with us and convinced him that jay IS amazing.

yes.. my parents especially my mum says that jay's music is noisy and they cant even figure out what's he is singing... but then.. one day.. when i was watching his MVs.. and when it was playing "Dong Peng Po", my mum heard it for the first time and fell in love with the melody.. she said that the melody is very smooth.. haha.. my friend's mum aso fall in love with "dOng Feng Feng".. so you might wanna try this song.. this song is quite 80s kind.. so they may llike it..

well i heard jays music in my room an my mom came in and then she was a bit astonished because she didn't understand the language of the singer so she asked what language he speaks and what music this is. when i had told her that it is chinese she was surprised because she didn't think that they can do such modern music that sounds soooo good and so westerly. so because jays music was so nice and the things he sings sound so good my mom allowed me to learn chinese *yeah* :-)

Hehe, it's pretty easy to make them to listen it, but it's really hard to make them to like it. So , if they don't then, it's okay. Not everbody like the same thing. I would suggest you to buy your own CD player so that you can enjoy them you self

I think its better you by a VCD or DVD video for her to watch. Maybe your mom don't like the music and mistaken it as noise. When you are watching it, your mom will follow thinking its entertaining.

Some people only likes certain type of entertaining. Try not to do homework with music first, cos parents will think that you are distracted. Try to switch to classical music, after they are certain that you can listen to music. You can tune to Jay's station!!
