(edit: This next part initially contained snippets of the lyrics from “Sunny Day” and “Rice Fields”. To keep this report from being too long, I decided to cut out this part.)

Jay Chou is the name for leading current trends, so it’s inescapable for him to be examined by people with a magnifying glass. At least you’ll have to make something of him so that you can be up-to-date with the popular discussion topics. Otherwise, if people asked, “Have you listened to Jay Chou’s new album?” and you couldn’t come up with an answer, wouldn’t it be a bit embarrassing?

At the same time, he has received special treatment. All the risky attempts were accepted because of the name, “Jay Chou”. Take the album name, for example. After listening to the whole album, my intuition is that “Ye Hui Mei” doesn’t really have any connection with the music. There’s only the farfetched reason, “Because the first single is “In the Name of the Father”, so Mom’s name was used for the album name.” Or the alternative can be it “matches the feeling of revisiting the past”. There was word that this year’s Golden Melody Awards judges made the slip-up of not knowing who is Stefanie Sun. What if next year’s judges also don’t know Jay Chou? When they see the application list, will they think it’s “singer Ye Hui Mei” who’s a candidate?

Mentioning the album name is actually just a small matter and does not play a part in the critique of this album’s strengths and weaknesses. Critiquing Jay’s music is like judging the GMAs, you need to use great caution and care. Too many people care about it and if there’s one sentence you say that doesn’t rub people the right way, then you may face the horrifying result of being shot in the heart by thousands of arrows. Fortunately, Jay is very open-minded. He once said, “Music can be “critiqued by everybody”!”

After hearing the recent big hit, “East Wind Breaks”, I couldn’t resist to say, “Good thing it’s associated with the name, “Jay Chou”.” He attempted to add in the ancient-sounding er hu and pi pa in this song. Trying something new and the melody is pretty good. It’s unfortunate that the arrangement did not have any major breakthroughs. If today it wasn’t sung by him, but instead, the song appeared amongst a bunch of mainstream rap, hip-hop, etc. kind of music; after hearing this song, maybe a lot of question marks will emerge from your heart.

“Sunny Day” is a love song that Jay’s company, Alfa Music, has high hopes for. It can be very much like “bar/lounge music” and become a widespread love song where it’s easy to catch the melody. But he didn’t want to be just ordinary. He added a bit of

rock and the use of emotions in singing was a bit heavier than before. His desire to earnestly be extraordinary amidst the ordinary was expressed flawlessly. Whether or not his fans can feel his passion, at least in terms of fans’ online voting activities, “Sunny Day” is securely in first place.

In terms of the overall album, there hasn’t been too many changes. It contains Jay’s usual musical style and principles. On the other hand, the 3 songs which he wrote lyrics for, “Sunny Day”, “Coward”, and “Rice Fields”, allowed all of us to better understand his ways of thinking and attitude. We also discover that he’s very cute, very eloquent in writing. Also, he’s very attentive about the things that concern daily life. The character of an album requires the assistance of words. Previously, Jay didn’t write lyrics as much. This time, using a sense of humour and a style that reflects daily life in his lyrical writing, it’s drastically different from his longtime partner, Vincent Fang’s, writing style. It’s an outstanding part of this album. He’s already headed in the direction of being an all-around songwriter. His growth is evident.

Jay is very curious about everything, attentive and detail-minded. It’s a big strength for his music making. Even if he doesn’t talk about it openly, in his own time, it makes way for endless possibilities. In fact, he can try to partner up with more different musicians to create new sparks. Moreover, bearing the name, “Jay Chou”, he can be even more courageous in his attempts. I believe if he wants to maintain a good album sales record, it’s not a difficult matter at all.

Thanks very much for the article Wacky.....

It's funny how the author use cute to describe Jay's writings.

Yep although the album name didn't have any connection with his music in the album, but I respect Jay's decision cause it's a form of respect he have for his mother and the love he shows her.
