and i'm fully prepared to accept that some people don't find tall (6 ft/1.8m), clean-cut, well-built, strong (he lifts at least 250lbs, and that was before training up for ai cuo), musically-talented (he plays violin, piano, er hu, guitar, drums etc.), strong-voiced men hot. to each her(his?) own.

So, how old are you? From my guess, your reputation points seem to be a good indication or ball park figure of your age since it's gradually declining as you continue to express your lack of intelligence here on the forums.

Firstly, I'm sure 90% of the people on these boards can understand everyone has their views on any given topic. The topics can range from artists to music and basicaly, it covers a broad range of things however, what most of us don't tolerate here is stupidity. There are many ways to convey yourself but please, don't add like "!!!!!!!!!!" or like his looks because really, I bet you don't look anything like a star.

Second, let's get to your "many reasons" or in otherwords, your 4 reasons:

- People have their opinions. Seeing as how you're a David Tao fan, alot of my friends say he's ugly and I respect their views because they're able to tell me it in an orderly fashion, unlike you. And how did you come up with that statement? His latest album was called, Chinked Out. I'd have to strongly argue that is clearly not very "Chinese" and more Western than anything. The "reasons" you listed aren't really supported and they are very narrow-minded. You think Leehom is ugly? Well, like many have said before, looks are subjective. A lot of people say that Jay is ugly but I think otherwise. I don't think you should HATE anyone, including a singer, for being ugly if you really think they are. You think he copies people's music? Well, it's hard to draw the line between whether something is copied or not in music. I definitely think he has his own style and I don't think he copies. True, some of his songs DO sound alike but if those article hadn't mentioned it, would you have noticed? In other words, perhaps one of Jay or David's songs sound like another song, but we don't quite make the connection yet. You think Leehom thinks he's "soooooooooo Chinese" eh? Well, technically he is. But he can't dump all of his American culture just to be a true Chinese singer now should he? Or to please people like you. Again, like others have said already, at least he appreciates Chinese culture and he's trying to do something to get Chinese music more accepted in the Western world. You think Leehom is stupid? Maybe it's just me, but I'm acutally glad to see an ABC glad to be Chinese. I mean I have so many white-washed Chinese friends who are either ashamed to learn chinese or are just not interested in the Chinese culture, I'm just glad that at least there is one ABC who is interested in promoting the Chinese Identity. In fact Jay Chou's music instroduced me to Leehom's and Leehoms's introduced me to DAvid Tao's. Music is Music, does it really matter who makes it? well name a singer lee hom copied, can you? i'm not such a lee hom fan, but it just irks me when people throw accusations around without backing up. and you think jay doesn't copy? and you think david tao doesn't copy? if you noticed, some of jay's songs do sound pretty similar, when i first heard "Ge Qian" and "Jie Kou" one could really confuse their introductions being for the other. Tell me if you can honestly declare that Jay's songs all sound distinctly different.

If you listened to David closely, you'd noticed similarities between some of his songs to. Let me give you an example. listen to his "17" and "Susan says". tell me if they give you the same feel, in terms of the rhythm and beat, and even the melody. of course the lyrics are different. and this was pointed out to me by a professional music making friend of mine who djs part time. and oh, in the middle when some other person sings something before the rap, doesn't it remind you of "one night in beijing"? the only song that's really original sounding and has no slight carbon copies would be "sha tan". and i include all other chinese songs on the market for that statement, not just songs from david's album.

there ain't anything wrong "copying" a little here and there. once an artiste develops his/her own style, there will be this distinct flavour for all his/her compositions and the pieces will resemble one another in subtle ways or another. are you going to chastise the great composer Chopin for being influenced by Liszt in writing his beautiful nocturnes, etudes, preludes et cetera? or Ravel for emulating Debussy for that matter?

getting influenced to produce music works (or even art pieces for that matter if you look at maestros from the impressionistic era) or "imitation" as you like to put it began a few hundred years ago with all these great composers of time. but each and every of these composers/artists still have their a style they call their very own and people who truly appreciate (and know how to for that matter) music would resume admiration for that composer that touched his heart, but respect that music comes in so many forms and not necessarily accept, but respect the works of others, even if he may not be so fond of it himself.

so what i'm saying is, how can you ever compare talent in this sense? it is all a matter of preference. and preferring an artiste over another doesn't necessarily make the one that did not have affinity with your preferences less worthy or more deficient. if you are comparing a common singer and a singer cum songwriter, then yes, of course we can safely declare that the latter is less talented.

even if today, jay sold more albums than david, i wouldn't say david is less of a composer than jay. to have appealed less to the mass audience doesn't make you lousier, because music IS subjective. and as long as composers are writing what truly comes from their heart and not writing to cater to the taste of the general market so as to garner as many supporters as they can and to do anything to push up album sales, i think we should applaud all of them, regardless of whether we can identify with what they write. :wink2:

Though reading only a few posts of this topic, I have to agree that attacking a pop star so similar to Jay Chou, as Lee-Hom, is a very bold thing to attempt. I have to admit, I liked Lee-Hom before Jay Chou. But once I found out how talented Jay is, I began liking him too. However, that doesn't mean I have to discriminate one over the other. Jay Chou has the lethargic cuteness and Lee-Hom has the tall hottie look, so what if you like one hottness over the other? That doesn't give you the right to make fun of the other kind.

It's all about the music. And some people like both.

I'm not attacking Jay. While he's very dear to my heart, I'm merely stating the facts, and even Jay admits that he cannot speak Chinese clearly. And no, he does not pronounce things correctly... In fact, he's mispronounced several words in his songs... In Yi Lu Xiang Bei, he said "ru" instead of "lu." And what exactly is the right style? Is there even such a thing?

And tell me, what is a "chinese" melody? Hm? It seems all pop songs these days sound very western to me... Who are you to determine whether songs are "chinese-y" or not? Have you ever studied Chinese music theory?

When writing "A Simple Song," Leehom even used the traditional Chinese 5 tone scale... And for background music, Leehom does arrange some of his own songs... And going off of that, if you accuse Leehom of having other people produce the chinese sound through background music, then does that apply to Jay as well? 'cause QLX is very Chinese sounding, and it's not like Jay did the instrumentation himself...

now now, again we've got someone who doesn't get facts right.

here's a quote from what lee hom wrote about one of the songs in his album, Forever First Day back in 2000.
(in case you didn't know, that was when Jay released his FIRST album)

In the song, "City of Pleasure", I also tried to incorporate many elements of Chinese music and Chinese culture, without being too obnoxiously literal. Actually, I had a lot of fun creating this song. The melody in the verses is again, strictly five-note (Eb pentatonic) and uses call and response devices to enhance the melody's simplicity. But the real fun was in making the arrangement, and it's this kind of detail which is not audible in a casual listening of the song that impells me to write about the album much in the way that classical composers write about their pieces. First off, the song begins with the sound of hitting ping-pong balls, which I recorded with Janet Jackson's drum programmer Alex Richbourg. I figured Ping-Pong, a Chinese game that has been embraced by the entire world, added a different dimension to this song, and also could serve as a great percussion snare sound! In the middle section of this song, I also sampled a section of a Sony Playstation Kung-fu fighting game because Kung-fu is also an internationally embraced aspect of Asian culture. Plus, the game just sounded great in the track. "City of Pleasure" also features instruments such as the gu zhen and er hu to give it even more of a Chinese flavor.

Lee Hom has long been interested in incorporating chinese elements into his music, as can be seen from the above quote. In what way is this copying Jay? Again, I reiterate that Jay released his FIRST album in that same year.

and by the way, i selected this particular quote because it talks about ping-pong balls - which is also featured in San Nian Er Ban - in YHM which was released 3 years AFTER Forever First Day in 2003.

I don't really hate Wang Lee Hom, but his existence is sometimes extremely irritating. My fren said that I have bad taste to be a fan of Jay Chou, coz Wang Lee Hom is better looking, and I got so exasperated. I mean, fine, WLH IS better looking sometimes, but Jay is cute enough sometimes, too. And I don't really like all of WLH's songs. Fast-track songs is kind of unsuitable for him, in my opinion. He's only good at singing slow songs, some of which is ok to hear, that's true. But I like ALL of Jay's songs. ALL of them. Coz it's more better quality and each song is unique. And Jay's a better composer. Some of WLH's self-composed songs, I hear once and never hear again. So even though I buy WLH's cds, it's all pirated, while I think that Jay's cds r worth buying the original. Most of them, anyway.

i agree with shay, anyone has all rights to have a hating whoever thread but the thing is, if they're gunna make an arguement, it at least has to have sensible and plausible reasons for hating a person. and hate's also a very strong word. i dont understand how someone can hate a person if that person hasnt done anything DIRECTLY to them. so sure, you may not like lee hom's music, but that doesnt give you a right to HATE him. it gives you a right to dislike his style of music or whatever, but you have absolutely no reason to hate a person because they're "too chinese" or is ugly or stupid things like that.

What Jolin hate thread? Either I'm going blind or you're seeing things. I assume you're referring to the ugly Jolin picture thread. Well I don't think it's fair to compare the two as equals. No one ever said that thread was for bashing and hating Jolin. We merely post pictures with some critical commentary. There's a disclaimer at the beginning telling anyone who doesn't like it to stay out. This thread on the other hand is an all out bitch fight waiting to happen.

At least with the Jolin picture thread, there's more substance to the argument than this thread. People can look at the pictures and say "Yes, Jolin does have gi-normous nostrils" or "No, she doesn't look like a duck"

While in this thread, there's just random arguments thrown out with nothing to judge by.

There's an ugly Jay picture (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4409) thread in existence here as well. But it doesn't mean "all Jay haters unite in here" as this thread does for Lee Hom.

I think one reason this thread isn't as active anymore is because many people feel there is no point in replying anymore. There has been rude comments exchanged, and really nothing is getting accomplished.

I mean people are refuting davidtao_freak, but instead of defending your reasons you start coming up with new irrelevent reasons like his sexual orientaton. So Davidtao_freak no one is saying you don't have a right to express your opinion, it's just that your arguements are weak and everytime someone refutes them you can't seem to defend your own opinion. That's the flaw in your post, yes you have a right to post, but the post is pretty pointless when you can't defend the point your making and you start getting personal and rude. I mean you call Leehom ugly and someone says that David is ugly and your response is "So what?", the point of a disscussion board is to discuss, and at this moment your not discussing anything, your pretty much just stating that your reasons are right. So yes you said the MODS can't close a thread becuase someone dislikes another singer, but technically this thread is just spam, there is nothing really to discuss. The past 100+ message people have been trying to discuss, but your replies are always "so what?" or "he's gay". Considering this thread is really going no where useful it actually can be closed. It's just like me creating a thread that I don't like the color pink. I mean the thread would be meaningful if I was willing to discuss and be open-minded, but it would really be pointless if I created a thread that said I don't like pink, becuase it's too girly and because I said so. There is a difference between a thread of opinions and a pointless thread of "this is how I feel and everyone else who disagrees will get named called". So I think this thread should and can be closed, i mean if this thread was allowed, wouldn't all pointless discuss-less threads also be allowed?

I never really understood why people hated Leehom so when I saw this thread I thought maybe it could answer my curiosity. However its done the opposite, its presented me more reasons to like Leehom than to dislike him. Leehom Wang is not stupid at all. He got a 1600 on his SAT and if don't live in America you probably won't undertand whats so great about a 1600. You have to be a real genius to get a 1600. Anything over 1450 is already considered a really really good score. They changed the SAT now 2400 is the max score now.
