Hey guys...
i kno sum of us here at this forum are from california, and since it's been all over the media, my friends and i are in this huge debate whether or not movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger is suitable for the postion of govoner.
what do u guys think? will he be able to be a good gov for the economically declining california?

GaryDAI

well I'll have to see where he stands on certain issues...........I'm a huge fan of his. I love all the Terminator movies but I'm not going to vote for him because of that.

This California recall is really wacky. Have you seen all the people trying to run? Gary Coleman is one name. He’s already said that he knows he’s not going to win. He’s just there to be seen pretty much. Another is a porn star  ........It seems like a whole joke....

I like Arnold though and he seems sincere. I hope he succeeds. His heart is definitely in the right place no doubt. I wish him the best of luck

Ne? Actually, all things considered, Arnold has a real chance of winning. I can't really say how much I support him because, well, I have no idea where he stands on the issues going on in California at the moment, but the one thing I have to say I like about him is he's a great advocate for schools and education in general.

Seriously, my teacher went to this state wide conference for teachers, and Arnold was there to talk about how important education is. It's obvious when you watch him on TV that education is extremely important to him.

As a student going to a middle-of-the-road high school, I can appreciate his values for the schools. Since education is the largest funded division in California's budget, everyone knows that it will probably be the first department for the government to cut funds from (they are still doing so now as evidence of my stupid school board).

I don't really know how good the recall is going to be, but it's happening now. Quite frankly, I don't really like Gray Davis a whole lot to begin with.

As for updates on who's running, there are over 200 candidates who filed today. Names include McClintock, Simons (ran for governor last year), Huffington, Bustamante (the man the Democrats pull behind in case Davis loses and current Lt. Governor), Carey (the porn star), Angelyne (the OTHER porn star), Flynt (owner of porn magazine "The Hustler"), and Gary Coleman.

The porn people and Gary Coleman annoy me. They should just leave and drop out while they still have an ounce of dignity.

I doubt it. I don't believe he has been in or even have any experience in politics. Politics is a whole "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours" world of favors and networking - just because he is a star does not mean he has ties with the right people to support the "right" issues.

We all know how great of a President Ronald Reagan was. Let's not revisit that.

yea...i agree arnold seems very sincere to his efforts for the kids. and his hollywood name could influence many...but he's still a novice in politics.
i just read that the ballot is going to be 20 pages long! :glug: geez...
and that there are over 200 ppl that are applying and have submitted their names and fees to run...lol
researches also say that it is possibble, maybe, that sumone wit a long and unique name will have a greater chance of catching the voters eyes and getting their vote... since the list of names is going to be sooooo huge.
hmm...i wonder who has a long and unique name?

I thought Ronald Reagan did a fine job.....

And it's not like Arnold just decided that he would jump into politics a couple months ago. He's been thinking about this for a while.

Everyone knows he's going to get some votes because of his name. There is not we can do about that.

And Chun Li you seem to have this negative vibe around you these past few days. I've read numerous post where you sounded extremely pissed off. Or maybe it's just me

Anyway Cheer up :)

Yes sorry that slipped my mind. I understand how you are completely stressed out. Well actually I do not since you are obviously a Moderator & I am not. You job is obviously more difficult than that of I.

But having said this, that does not mean you have to take your anger out here. It at least seems that way to me.

Keep that to the other thread.

And, No I'm not preaching all this stuff to you. Making myself sound all holy and all. I know I am by far (far as far can be) from being a perfect poster.

I am merely giving an opinion.

*blink* If the hopes of Arnold being the governor are not good, then the question would have to be, who would be better?

I don't trust Bustamante (the main Democrat running) because he is current Lt. Governor. He rules underneath Davis.

And if any of the other nobodies are still a big part of the election, I'll start going after people.

hmmmmm...interestin'.. the good thing that it shows that anyone can be anything..while the bad thing is being a governor is a big thing and just not sure if Arnold or anyone who r the other 200 canadites that just woke up n' say ' i wanna be a cali governor' can do what a political guy been doin most of his life. i 'm not sure if i make sense. but whatever.
i saw this interview with Bill Simon, and he said that someone said to him that this election is a ABC election, A-ronold, B-ill Simon,C-ruz.
So would Davis be include in the abc election? :wink2: hehe

Chun Li

not sure if Arnold or anyone who r the other 200 canadites that just woke up n' say ' i wanna be a cali governor' can do what a political guy been doin most of his life.

That's my point exactly. Politicians usually have a law degree, have been in politics since they've graduated with their degrees, and usually have experience lobbying and networking with other politicians up the social ladder. The more people you know, the easier it is to get your ideas through. People who have not been involved with politics (read: Arnold) have to start a lot later than the people who have been with it since their college days. Even though he's an actor, he doesn't have "guan xi" or a strong relationship with a lot of the important people. Let's say he's a democrat and wants to pass and approve new education bills or campaigns for schools in California -- he may not have the clout that someone who has been in the scene for years has. Then again, he may have had contact with them - but I don't remember reading about him donating money to anyone's campaigns or supporting any particular governor.

More importantly, we want a governor who can focus and concentrate on this issues in California. Our education system has no money, we've had to face severe budget cuts in the last few years, our electricity still has problems, and no one is fixing it! Moreover, this is not a good sign:

If he decides to run, Schwarzenegger will have to juggle his political dealings with his day job. According to Variety, the actor is in talks to star in the comedy "Big Sir." He's also signed on to star as the robot gunslinger in a remake of the Yul Brynner 1973 science fiction film "Westworld."

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/entertainment/2332752/detail.html

If he's so busy, he should just give the job to someone else. I wouldn't vote for him unless he says he's going to retire.

California has one of the largest economies in the States and can survive alone if it decided to break off from the US and be its own country. We support the rest of the nation with our agriculture. Too bad Gray Davis has no idea how to fix mistakes.

Warren Buffet, 72-year-old business guru, currently 2nd richest man in U.S. with a net worth of about $30 billion, has decided to back Arnold and help him choose financial and economic advisors. Buffet is highly respected as a business man and has only supported Democrats like Hilary Rodham Clinton until just recently. The fact that he's even helping Arnold does go to show that there is some legitimacy to Arnold's running...

Am I repeating myself? o.O

Anyway, I still think Arnold is a better alternative when compared to the likes of Mary Carey, Angelyne, Larry Flynt and Gary Coleman. He has shown interest in politics... and at least, Arnold didn't decide to run for the heck of it. He has been considering the move for awhile.

Recently, in an LA Times article, there has been some.. indication of where Arnold stands on the issues. He's apparently a social liberal-fiscal conservative. He supports pro-choice abortion as far as I know and he's conservative on financial spending.

Really, as bad as it might be to have an actor as a governor, I do not want Davis in office by the time the elections end. Mr. Davis has put our state $38 billion in debt. Not to mention, we have to reimburse him whatever the costs the recall elections costs if he wins.

I don't trust Simons, Davis wastes money, Bustamante can be little better than Davis, and Huffington kind of cheated on her taxes. Joy. When even the main candidates running are jokes, what options do we have left?

Chun Li
08-16-2003, 12:16 AM
Arnold is supposed to be a moderate republican. He voted for prop. 187, which is quite ironic since he was an immigrant himself. Of course, he's married to Maria Shriver, who is related to the Kennedy's... and as I recall, a determined Democrat. If Arnold can come up with some good campaigns and ideas to turn around California, I'll give him a listen. However, I would like him to prove that he actually understands politics and is genuinely concerned for the people.

Huffington has actually been openly attacking Arnold in public. Webster has decided not to campaign, and I wonder what Bustamante's plan is.

linny
08-16-2003, 12:56 AM
Huffington and Arnold are the only two that I really notice campaigning. They're the only ones really getting their names out there.

Bustamante has yet to really make a move, which is... odd.

Bleh, I want to wait until they have that large debate on TV with all the major candidates. Anyone know when that is? September...?

Kallisandra
08-16-2003, 05:40 AM
I've been reading the paper a lot, and I think Arnold would be good for California, even though he hasn't much political experience and he has a jaded movie past. Compared to the rest of the candidates, why wouldn't an actor that is a self-made business man be good for California? Sure he's a Republican, but he's on the soft side and they keep pointing that out in the news. Although he has no real plan for what to do with the California economy he's aligning with a lot of powerful economic personalities on his palate. I think the only fishy thing is where Issa was the one to rally to get Davis booted out of office by raising $1.6million, what I haven't heard is what other people think about that? Besides Arnold but his quick decision to run instead of Issa? Actually I wanted Feinstein to run... she is after all California's favorite politican. I think Bustamante is waiting for more donations, Arnold isn't really campaigning, he's getting free publicity b/c he's a movie star... at least that's what other commentators say... What I'm waiting for is the solution to the economic problems. Stop taking away my hard earned money for taxes!

Chun Li
08-16-2003, 08:09 PM
If Feinstein was running I would definately consider voting for her. I'd have to read up on her opinions concerning several issues, but I like the way she handles her publicity and she has so much experience in the political circle. (Plus she's a woman!) The problem I fear with Arnold is that because of his lack of experience, he'd be a little "puppet" for his advisors. I want someone who knows what he's doing controlling California.

I absolutely agree with you Chun Li. I think that's everyone's worry perhaps Arnold may project a secure image but what if he's not secure enough to hold up the opinions and needs of Californians? We haven't seen his proven technique, it would be sad if we had to file for another recall.

Chun Li
08-18-2003, 09:30 PM
They said something like if you vote for the recall, then you can't vote for the other 135 candidates or something. But how can they let the candidates get to over 100?? It's like a circus!

i dont think arnold should be elected governor. even though he is a popular movie star and his wife is related to the kennedy family, i still dont think he is qualified politically to be a governor. for example, look at what happened to minnesota and jesse ventura!

Arnold as governor seems like a bad idea. He's got good ideas for education, but that only works if CA has the money for it, which we don't. A crash course in budgeting is not gonna help the current budget crisis.
Everyone might make fun of Larry Flint (owner of Hustler), but in all honesty he's got way more experience in politics than Arnold. I'm not supporting him, but he had to get to know the system when the government was suing his porn magazine to get it off the stands. So we know he has the networking skills, the budgeting skills comes from having a multibillion dollar empire, and his views I'm not really sure of, but I'm sure that we would probably agree on most views since he's a Republican and I'm pretty conservative in most areas.
I would never vote for the hypocrite Diane Feinstein. The one who tries her best to get rid of all guns in CA while she herself has a CCW (concealed weapons carry) permit, which is for a gun. While law abiding citizens (like me) have to move to Orange County and live here for a year before I can even apply for one, she walks around thinking that she's more important than everyone else. I at least help create jobs for CA and bring money into this state, so don't think that I don't do anything for this state.
"Why do you need a CCW?" is a question you might ask. To protect myself from people who think they can make some easy money by robbing me or my company. Last week, one of my client's store was robbed and his employee was shot. Now that is uncalled for. A couple months ago, some guy got shot in his back after he handed the BG the keys to his Lexus which had those spinning rims on them. Now that was completely jacked. If you guys haven't figured it out yet, I'm in the aftermarket wheel industry.
Issa isn't that bad of a guy. He's not even running for governor, but is he was, I'd probably vote for him. He had the guts (and money) to start the recall campaign and push it through. We now have a $36 billion deficit, but when he first took office, we had a surplus. Population growth and inflation combined has not exceeded the increase in CA's GDP, so there is absolutely no excuse why we should be in such a huge deficit. For those that don't know, Davis pushed a bill that allows firefighters and prison guards to reatain 90% of their current salary if they retire at the age of 55. If we had the extra money it would be ok, but we don't, and he decides to cut other vital functions in CA instead.
There's much more, but I don't want to write a novel :bleh:

jesse ventura isnt a good comparison with arnold. ventura at least had exprience before he ran for gov..
he knows his stuff and the politics that goes along with it. sure, he probably won with his popularity but at least he backed it up.

anyways. voting time is coming near and i have NO idea what i want. :hmm: do i want a recall? do i want arnold, davis, bustamente? how can i sort out what's bs and what's the truth? does a person's past mistakes make the man he is now? :bang:

its not like i've got anything against Arnold, or anyone else, but during that debate a couple fated suns ago...Bustamente's attitude was really

well, i hated his attitude, the least he could do was have the integrity to treat all other candidates equally, at least, not calling their education and status into question and implementing that into his arguments...that just rings a horrible bell. like how he repeatedly tried to pass Arnold off as a political illiterate idiot

although Arnold does amuse me...when you watch the debate...it'll look like Arnold's winning...like "ohh he's kicking ass"

but seriously, how the hell? he's just talking over everyone...he needs to learn that his voice doesn't win him the votes...and he needs to stop butting into other people's speeches like an idiot

he's been repeating the same sentence in different structural forms and different wordings...basically he wants people to know that "he doesn't play the game all the other candidates play"...what game though, i'm not sure if Arnold even knows

Mike

Arnold has Pete Wilson backing him. That's horrible. Wilson is the most horrible governor California could have had. It's HIS fault that he deregulated the electric power companies, which resulted in the black out that Davis couldn't get us out of. Now that Davis had to grovel for money to pay for an electricity crisis that his predecessor started, he gets blamed for the bad debts and is not replaced with Arnold, which is practically a puppet for Wilson to regain his position. Just horrible.

Damn all those people for voting just because they thought, "Hey, Arnold sure was cool as the terminator...!"

Actually, that's what I was arguing today. They should take a test on what the candidates views are, his history and experience, and WHOM his political agenda could affect if he was elected into office.

But then again... it's not fair for the uneducated... and the rich will definately use this for their advantage. In the end, all the Republicans would be elected. Sigh.

LOS ANGELES - Seething over taxes and red ink, voters dumped the unpopular Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites) and replaced him with political novice Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites). Davis, the Democrat who presided over California's economy as it careened from boom to bust, was recalled Tuesday less than a year into his second term.

With 97 percent of precincts reporting Wednesday morning, the recall was favored by 4,091,181 voters or 54.3 percent, and opposed by 3,437,940 voters or 45.7 percent. Among the replacement candidates, Schwarzenegger was ahead with 3,476,301 votes, or 47.8 percent of the vote; Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante (news - web sites) had 2,354,483 votes, or 32.4 percent; Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock (news - web sites) had 958,720 votes, or 13.2 percent; and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo (news - web sites) had 205,210 votes, or 2.8 percent.

Schwarzenegger, a moderate Republican with tons of charisma but virtually no political experience, was easily elected among candidates to replace Davis just two months after shocking even his closest aides when he declared his candidacy on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno (news - Y! TV)."

Seems like there are a lot of Democrats in this forum. That's ok though, because that's your views, and their policies benefit you guys the most. There is so much Republican bashing and rich bashing though. Did you guys ever stop to think of all the hard work that people put in to accumulate/maintain their wealth as well as make it grow? Wouldn't you want tax breaks as well when you have to give up close to 50% of your income to help support ingrates that hate you with an undying passion?
Yes Pete Wilson screwed up big time with the electricity crisis, but Davis contributed to the demise of our budget surplus as well. You forget that Davis whored himself out to the firefighter unions and prison guard unions. They supported him during the re-election, so he of course had to give them the option to retire at the age of 55 with 90% pay for the rest of their lives. I'm not saying that these people don't deserve it, but the fact is that we did not have the money to make this happen without suffering deep cuts in our budget. Could that be one of the reasons why we again do not have money for our public schools? Community colleges, UC schools, and any public college for that matter has seen huge increases in tuition costs thanks to all the budget cuts. How do you account for the 38 billion dollar surplus that the state had before Davis took office? The tripling of the car tax was also an added bonus that Davis gave to everyone in the state of California.
The electricity crisis could have easily been resolved if there was a price cap. Basic economics tells you that price caps and rent controls don't work, but electricity was a special case. If price caps would have been imposed, the cost of electricity would have gone way down because of this simple point. Electricity is very costly to store and would have just gone to waste. If price caps had been imposed, electricity makers would have lowered the price further to get rid of their product before it became useless.
Now on to my favorite topic, gun control. Why is it that liberals are so adamant against guns? Especially against law abiding citizens? Is it because those against guns are scared of what they know nothing about? What happens when your average not carrying citizen is in trouble or danger? That's right, you call the cops (the good guys with guns) and then you wait for however long it takes them to get to you. In the meantime you just hope that you aren't seriously injured or dead by the time they get to you. It's funny how there's only 8 people in L.A. who actually have a conceal carry weapons permit while countless other bad guys carry guns illegally. If more people had a permit to carry, the crime rate would go down because it would make it a lot harder for criminals to guess who was armed and who wasn't. Diane Feinstein, one of the biggest advocators against guns has a concealed carry weapon permit for a handgun. Is her life worth more than your's or mine? I don't think so...
Enough ranting though, time for me to get back to work.

i find it harder to believe that you'd revive a thread that died a year ago involving an event that happened two years ago.
