Some people are totally new to boards/forums so here are some terms you might be unfamiliar with. Sorry if this is really elementary for some members, but I was tired of people asking me what a 'post' was.
Forum - These are forums:

A forum is any one of these places listed where you can post topics specific to the forum description. Read the description under their name to see what is allowed to be posted there.
Board - A board, also known as message board, is a collection of forums. This site is a message board. Or you can call it the forums. But not forum (singular) because there is more than one forum here (read definition of forum above).
Topic - A topic is the subject for discussion, for example, the topic of this thread is: Jay-Chou.net Terminology. The subject for this (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3205) thread is: Tips for new members
Thread - A thread is a collection of posts under one topic. For example, this thread (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1199)
has 53 posts, any topic with more than 1 post is considered a thread.
Post - A post are the messages people write and submit to the board. What you're reading right now is a post. When you click "Post Reply" or "New Topic" you are making a post.
PM - A PM is a private message. You send a PM by clicking on the PM icon appearing in the person's post, or when you view their profile. A private message is sent to that person only.
diao - a slang term Jay uses that means cool. It can mean other things, read the other posts in this thread.
nOOb - a person new to the whole concept of forums. Someone who's new and also a total idiot, doesn't follow rules, posts crap all over the place, asks how to download, why they can't download. We hate nOObs. At least I do. Note this is different from a newbie, who is also new to the forums, but takes time to learn and effectively asks questions when they are unsure.
Any other terms you don't understand, feel free to ask here.

Thank you Karen for typing these out. PLEASE read these and stop asking us, okay? It's really self-explanatory. If you think you still have a question, use your brain and try to figure it out yourself first. If you still can't figure out what a forum is after you read this, then you've major problems and we can't help you.
Thanks Karen. Now all I have to do is refer the noobs to this link :flowers:
All right!Roger that!!Thanks for explaining ya~

Uhm.. What does DIAO mean?? cool? er.. ??
yes, DIAO means cool in Chinese
for secondary meaning, refer to nothing...ignore the second meaning =)
Second meaning - Penis.
Jo> we can't hide them from the truth :bleh:
and for liao, i think she's talkinga bout the liao as in ?.
as in ?
wth is ?
if you mean the Chinese liao though, its just a word that shows completion of the event described in the phrase
for example
wo chi wan liao - i'm done eating
liao jie - resolved
but i don't see LIAO often on the forums, if at all, and certainly not capped
yea, that liao, for osme reason chinese won't will come up but won't come up when i use Opera...
? <-still doesn't work
EDIT: i'm using IE now, lemme see if it'll work
了 <- should show up.
EDIT 2: yes, it works. the reason i think she was thinking liao was cause in Nuo Fu, it's like 你了嗎? and a couple people were discussion about it

LIAO
A Hokkien tag which depending on the context can mean either "already" or "finished".
Examples:-
1. "His mother early-early si liao, loh." (His mother died very early.)
2. "Like that his business sure liao, lah." (In such circumstances, his business is surely finished.)

This is something used by Singaporeans, we call it Singlish~

liao jie - resolved
Jo, perhaps allow me to add on, just in case there are some people who might misunderstand ...
Liao Jie = 了解 = Understand
Liao Jie = 了结 = Resolved
And Phyxius, if you were referring to liao as in “你了(liao)吗?” in the song [懦夫],Kitty was actually singing "Do you understand?"
does anyone know the words that jay says at the beginning of in the name of the father??? is it italian of spanish... first i thought it was spanish but im not sure... can anyone tell me those words at the beginning and end of that song???

this doesnt belong here...
anyway...WHY do ppl keep asking that question...if u noticed the MAFIA theme in the mv, and reading that all the places he traveled to do the mvs were in ITALY...then it wouldnt be so hard 2 figure out that he is speaking itailian...besdies..the other ppl in YFZM dong even look spanish -__-;; and even the title doesnt fit for a spanish background...b/c they worship Mary....and while they do of course believe in god...mary more than anything else...so Yi FU zhi ming wouldnt work as well....haha just lots of small clues to figure it out... :bleh:
im sure someone translated it in the "Lyrics/Translations" section...look around in there

So which tone is it in pinyin? And even better, which Chinese character?
If said in the third tone, it means f**k (using the same character as the Cantonese "diu") in Mandarin. Or in Hakka (ke jia hua), "diao" is exactly f**k.
That's why I was a bit shocked when I first heard the word.
Doesn't diao mean penis, not f*ck?

vunsin, this is the chinese character: 屌
and i think it is the third tone in mandarin. i'm not sure if there's the same coarse meaning as the word "diu" does in cantonese, but it's supposed to be a slang word in taiwan the way jay uses it. he means it as "cool" and not the f-word. the literal meaning is actually "penis". that was published in the time asia article on jay a while back.
i've never heard of diao being used as f**k before
it literally means penis, or the slang meaning would be cool, or awesome

Well, Mandarin speakers don't use the word "diao" as the F word (heck, there aren't that many swear words in Mandarin), but Cantonese and Hakka speakers definitely do.
You know how Cantonese (HK) speakers are constantly "creating" new Chinese words, like add the "mouth" to the word "sheep" and it becomes the sound of "meh" (what). Or they have their own word for "he/she" which is "kui" instead of using "ta" from proper Chinese Mandarin. The word "kui" when read in Mandarin would be "ji" and it has no real meaning. Although in proper Chinese (textbooks, official letters, etc.) they would follow the standard Mandarin way of writing (words and grammar), if you read the entertainment news most of the time it's just Cantonese Chinese and Mandarin speakers, while they could pronounce the words (just the sounds), might not be able to understand the meaning.
So anyhow, the word "diu" in Cantonese could be written in Chinese, and although it's not used as a word in Mandarin, would be pronounced as "diao3" in Mandarin. In Hakka it's pronounced almost the same as the Mandarin one, except the tone is a little bit higher.
I'm not sure which character is being used for the F word exactly (it's not like I could find it in the dictionary), but I don't think it's the same word Jay is using for "cool" though.

I think he uses the same word, but with the meaning of 'cool' in mind.... A word has many meanings... so the way he said it more of less should be the 'cool' instead of the F***....
Just like a long time ago, gay means to be happy, and everyone was gay, and everyone wants to be gay
but now.... NOT everyone is gay... and not evryone wants to be gay anymore....

That makes sense, too, macdawn. I'm trying to verify this with my HK friends though. Just to make sure if it's the same word or not. But it'd be weird if the same character is being used so differently in different dialects (one is cool and one is f**k?). I really have to ask people. While I speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and Hakka fluently and am almost 90% Chinese literate, I didn't really learn Chinese in school. I haven't been formally educated in Chinese, so I don't consider myself an expert in written Chinese. Anyhow, I'll let everyone know once I find out for sure about that character.

The Difference between nOoB and newbie:
NoOb - A newcomer who does not follow forum rules, double posts, writes crap and pointless junk, posts things in wrong forum, writes in StIcKy CaPs or slang, etc.
Newbie - A newcomer who follows forum rules, posts quality things and contributes in their own way. Soon will grow out of their newbie-hood into a quality member.
Which do YOU want to be?
