We have a soccer thread...and this wonders me...anyone interested in tennis?
I considered new to this game cos...I don't play it.
Some how..the game is kindda like the bigger size of ping pong.
It's quite interesing anyway. :bleh:

Any fave tennis stars? :?

Jo
08-09-2003, 09:10 PM
i love tennis...definitely

just wanted to mention that i went to see a game a year ago, and sat right behind where Andre Agassi was playing...and heard him cuss throughout the game...from that moment on...he's no longer my favorite tennis star :prop:

GaryDAI

I enjoy tennis and table tennis :) Both the same really hehe

lol what's with cursing Jo? All atheletes curse all the time.

Jess

:D @ Jo and his former tennis star

I used to hate tennis but somewhere during half of my tennis camp I suddenly began to develop a huge liking for it. Now I play whenever I can with my parents (we go to some country club) and I love it :dead:

Sadly, I'm still out in the cold about all the tennis stars though :hmm: I do know of the Kournikova girl, however.

GaryDAI

Everyone know who Anna Kournikova is :excited: hehe

I heard she might have to retire cause of back problems

Jo
08-09-2003, 09:36 PM
its just...his whole "perfect" image was ruined right there

i know they all cuss...its just he cussed damn(damn isn't a cuss is it?) loud

and then he followed to slam his racket against the ground...that was quite a sight too

i don't do that...i just throw my racket at the next incoming ball :prop:

Jess
08-09-2003, 09:46 PM
I see you've moved on from :icecream: to :prop:, Jo XP

I would think slamming your racket anywhere would result in denting it, which isn't good. Hm.

Jo, so you were at a really prestigious tennis tournament then? When? Was it fun? Was it a "learning experience"???

GaryDAI
08-09-2003, 09:47 PM
lol I remember playing table tennis I use to toss my racket a bunch of times  It always happened when I tried to slam the ball down :)

Luckily I learned to stop doing that. Although.... my sister threw her racket at me .... guess it runs in the family lol

Jo
08-09-2003, 09:49 PM
nah Jess...the furthest i've made is to the tennis finals, but that's for the school Tennis Team

we went into the semi-finals a couple times too...but usually we just fall back out

i played jv tennis at school but i love just playing with my friends. have you guys ever seen Paradorn Srichaphan play? he's a young thai tennis player and hes making a name for himself...and hes the only asian player i can think of since michael chang. hope he continues to do well. but i love andy roddick! he's a great player! but...not great enough to win wimbledon. i was cheering for him though..wooo!

hmmm....me and my family play tennis every sunday morning for three hours......we've been doing that for the last 10 years (maybe more)

i don't mind tennis..not my favourite sport but it can be fun.....but i LOVE watching tennis.....the only time i've been to a professional tennis match was when i went to the adidas international at homebush in sydney!!! it was really good!! got to see martina hingis vs serena williams (this was ages ago...and martina won i think) and saw bjorkman (love the swedes!!!!)

GaryDAI
08-10-2003, 03:02 AM
where is martina these days? I thought she was the top women player for a while? Sorta just disappeared

GaryDAI
08-10-2003, 03:45 AM
ah sad to hear that

the william sisters are going to be on top for a while. The ladies just can't keep up with there power.

I'll get my butt kicked by them no doubt lol

I used to watch a lot more tennis when Steffi Graf was around. She was my absolute favourite player. She had so much grace and class. Personally, I didn't like the top seeds after her. Somehow, I find that they never quite managed to match her in terms of poise. But that's a personal opinion.

The only people I have watched, in a live tennis match, are Michael Chang, Todd Woodbridge & Mark Woodforde. I got their autographs too! And I took a photo with Todd Woodbridge, which was a big thing for me at that time...because I thought he was so cute.

yay...the woodies

but woodbridge and bjorkman are kicking butt anyways =)

do you enjoy mens or women more?

I enjoy mens. More competitive imo.

linny
08-10-2003, 06:11 AM
Definitely, watching mens is more interesting...

I don't often watch any more, but when there's a match on, I'll watch it for a bit.

I have yet to watch a match between the Williams sisters... Must do that someday. ^^;;

cloUdsuRFer
08-10-2003, 06:18 AM
yeah....d.efinitely mens......
don't really watch that much women's tennis......

Jess

I'll bet women are more fun to watch from the guy's POV =p

Actually I enjoy watching tennis on TV. Women are fun to watch too, but usually mens is more exciting and competitive.. I think.

GaryDAI
08-10-2003, 06:26 AM

Am I only the weird one? I actually enjoy watching women tennis than men ones. I like Justine Henin, her backhand is sooo good, powerful, strong...
Anna Kournikova is hot...but..she seems to lose her touch! don't ya think so?

i've taken tennis lessons since i was in 4th grade..but i stop and went on a few times...so i would have to keep practicing in order to get good at it....i've played wid my bro a couple of times the week when summer break began..but now im not....but its fun..when the other person u're playing can return the ball lol....and i love the sound when u hit the ball lol haha....i don't have a favorite tennis star...i don't usually watch it

xiAoJie
08-10-2003, 09:41 AM
ooo i luv watching tennis!! but my luv for it kinda faded afta watching the soccer world cup. i hate watching womens tennis becoz its always either the william sisters, justine henin and kim clijsters who win the comps, so its not really that thrlling watching it. men's tennis on the other hand is more exciting in my opinion, there aren't as many errors, and its faster as well. and you neva knoe whose going to win.

:excited: :bounce: :excited: i love watching tennis!!! can't play it myself coz i'm not born sporty, but i love watching other ppl!

my fave player used to be stefan edburg (retired years ago) from sweden and pete sampras. they're both so cool to watch coz they're always so calm...unlike some players nowdays.... pete, in his best years was almost perfect. he rarely made mistakes. and he had so many trademark shots too, like the running forehand, and the overhead-jump-smash. :excited: i was so happy for him when he won wimbedon in 2001...i think. anyway, it was his last major. he'd won it so many times b4 that it must've become "boring". but this time, he actually looked really happy, coz he'd come back from injuries and his form had slipped in recent years.
i like agassi too! he's 33 but still giving the young guys a run for their money....but after hearing what Jo said.....

a slight change of tone....i absolutely cannot stand lleyton hewitt!!! even though he's aussie, i can't help but wish that he losses every time! his mouth is so foul! he's so darn arrogant!! he always thinks he's right and is so totally rude to the linespeople and umpire. that guy just has no shame at all!! him -> :profanit: :thumbsdo:

don't even mention kournikova. i think she should just retire from tennis and focus her life on modelling or something else where she can actually achieve something.

what about shrichapan (spelling???) tho! he's improved so much in the last couple of years! good to see asians around!

i love watching tennis. i dunno why. it's slow. takes up at least 2 hrs of my time! but i still watch it.. ahh. my favourite player is Juan Carlos Ferrero.. when he's on form he's sooooooooo good! i love to see him play when he's very confident. but he does tend to crack under preassure. he recently won the French Open ! he's good on clay..

nunchakus
08-11-2003, 04:46 PM
I think my absolute favourite tennis moment was during Steffi Graf's match against Kimiko Date at Wimbledon a couple years back. Steffi Graf was about to serve when this guy from the audience shouted out "Steffi, will you marry me???" to which she replied, "How much money do you have??" and the crowd started laughing.

It was just one of those classic moments.

Speaking of grunts...I think Monica Seles has a looouuud grunt.

cloUdsuRFer
08-12-2003, 08:44 AM
omg...those grunts...they crack me up!! its like they're fighting to see who can grunt the loudest!!

haven't seen much steffi graf tennis......how sad.....

GaryDAI
08-12-2003, 09:05 AM
lol have you heard this new person recently? she grunts louder than monica!

I was watching some highlights of the match and she was real loud. The judge on the chair even told her to try to keep it down!!!!

Yes yes yes! He's dutch too! Just like me, well, I'm chinese but I live in the Netherlands, so ofcourse I'll support him.
Anyway, first he was standing at the 117th of the world list, and now beneath the 20 or something? Correct me if I'm wrong, but he played very well during that competition or "you know" (:bleh:).

And the Williams sisters play also very good! :yeah:

Miss_gun
08-13-2003, 02:53 AM
Hmmm....he has a lot of expression.. and it's funny!!
There is one where he stick out his tongue cheekily after he got a point...:D

I think Serena Williams is better than Venus Williams..

GaryDAI
08-13-2003, 03:00 AM
who's the older sister again? Serena?

mista_t13
08-13-2003, 03:12 AM
No Serena is 18 months younger than Venus. Their pretty good but I don't like watching them play cuz you know their always going to win. on second thought I don't really like watching tennis, Id rather be playing :bleh: even though im pretty bad lol. what kinda courts you guys play on? iv only seen clay on tv...but id like to try it.

xiAoJie
08-13-2003, 06:59 AM
yeh, i dun like it wen venus and serena play either. they usually very often play each other in the final and thats just annoying, becoz we all knoe they're fixed, and its not exciting

ker_ai_teresa
08-13-2003, 12:42 PM
I think Serena Williams is better than Venus Williams..

serena is better coz she's not as emotional as venus. when venus thinks a call is unfair to her and she argues about it, she usually loses concentration coz she's so worked up about the unfair call. whereas serena is able to control herself and focus on what she's doing. basically, she's more disciplined.

i'm not sure about the match fixing thing....but you've got to admit they are very dominant on the women's circuit. if they win then they deserve to coz others can't beat them! but it is nice to see the "underdog" beat them now and again.

i'm not really much of a fan of the williams sisters...

they don't appeal to me at all...and i don't kno if they are that great for women's tennis.....even with clijsters and henin winning now and then....its still kinda....yuck.,..i dunno....

yeah i love watching tennis, I can't play though... My favorite player has always been mark Philippoussis, it was so cool when he got to the finals in wimbledon, I hate federer...

The Williams sisters, they are very dominating when it comes to women's tennis, which is why i don't enjoy watching women's tennis as much

I think in men's tennis, there is more chance of a big upset, so it is more fun to watch

I can't play it but I think I might learn it someday.
I cheer for "Paradorn Srichaphan" (of coz he's a hero in my country~) also "Andy Roddick", I think he's cute and looks so young for the ages of 20!! (Mandy Moore is so lucky. >< I think she's older than him, right?) And the one that I've always cheer for is "Andre Agassi". He's so great and play wisely everytime...every match!!

i'm not american, in fact i'm aussie, but i still strongly dislike him. :bigyuck:

I know who Patrick Rafter is and I'm not Australian! :yeah: Hehe, I used to like to watch him play too, because I felt that he had class and poise and would make a good world number one (he was #1 for a short while, right? Well, it was good while it lasted)...And of course, he made quite good eye candy. Anyone else thinks he looks a tad like Tom Cruise?

I thought Pete Sampras was a good champion too, in that he didn't lose his temper on court easily...

On to newer players, I like Justin Henin. She reminds me a little of Steffi Graf. Quiet, determined and a rather underrated player.

cmy_185

i know who Pat Rafter is. he's one of the few Aussie players that i like.
i really dislike Leytton Hewwitt though. he's irritating on court. i feel like slapping his face each time i see him.haha. and kim clijsters is his GF? i don't like her too. they really suit each other. blah.

i found it really funny a while ago when he was fined for calling the umpire spastic...even though it wasn't a big fine...it must've been embarassing

I heard that, too.

Did anyone watch Paradorn play against Nicolas Kiefer last night? Paradorn won comfortably 6-0, 6-2. Quite surprising because I heard his record against the German was pretty poor.

He's going to play James Blake in the final in about 2 hours, they met around this time of the year last year in the Legg Mason Classic and Paradorn lost in the final.

Chang is indeed retiring soon; this current tour will be his last. He announced his decision at the last French Open in front of a huge standing ovation, at the location where he earnt his first, and last, grand slam victory.

For those who didn't have the privilege of following Chang's career, you've missed out on watching one of the game's true champions. Born and raised in America by Taiwanese parents, Chang became the youngest ever player to win a Grand Slam, winning the French Open in 1987 at 17 years of age. The win at France had also ended America's drought at Roland Garros, Chang being the first American since 1955 to claim victory in France.

Chang was undersized, underpowered, underrated but overachieving, who all about hard work and heart as he ran down balls. It wasn't stunning talent that carried him, but a stunning will to win. At the height of his career, he was ranked #2 in the world. At that time, he formed one fourth of America's greatest tennis generation, along with Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Jim Courier. Chang's contribution to the group includes 34 singles titles and over US$19 million in career prize money.

Chang's immense speed on court was his greatest asset. He would chase down every ball and rarely concede a point. To this day, I still remember the Energizer batteries ad featuring Chang playing a game of tennis against the Energizer battery, a parody where Chang ultimately gives up against the battery, complaining "Don't you ever give up?" (The ad has since been bastardized which Chang being replaced by some fancy CGI of burly men).

Arguably, the greatest game in his career would be the quarter finals of the '89 French open, where Chang stunned the world by defeating giant Ivan Lendl, despite serving underhanded and suffering from immense leg cramps.

A true champion on and off the court, he was also set up and headed numerous charities helping underprivileged children. He has also been involved in uncountable other "celebrity" charity events, among the most notable his involvements to raise money for the victims of the Kobe eathquakes in 1995. Such was the size of Chang's heart that USA Today Weekend named him one of 5 "most caring athletes" of our time.

But I think I've spoken too much hehe. . . in other news today, Hewitt through to the 2nd round of the US Open!! And Sampras announces his retirement. . . hehe

I can't believe Michael Chang is still playing :p

He must be atleast high to mid 30's by now?

he's about 33. he's in the same era as sampras, agassi and courier...

and i didn't know he was still playing??!! i thought he'd retired years ago!

i saw some coverage on sampras's last appearance at this year's US open to announce his retirement...how sad....to see him wearing a collared shirt and jacket instead of his usual white tennis shirt and baggy shorts....i'm gonna miss him.

Ah, at that French Open, Michael announced that he would be retiring, but that he would stay on for the 2003 season to play his final tour.

Excerpt from www.usopen.org:

"Chang, 31, is scheduled to play his final professional tournament at the 2003 US Open, concluding a 16-year career in which he won 34 singles titles, including seven Tennis Masters Series events and a Grand Slam. He became the youngest Grand Slam men’s singles champion when he won the 1989 Roland Garros title at the age of 17 years and 3 months and ended a 44-year drought for American men in Paris. Chang reached three other Grand Slam singles finals and was runner-up at the 1995 ATP season-ending championships. He earned a career-high ranking of No. 2 in September 1996 after reaching the US Open final. He represented the United States at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and posted an 8-4 record for the U.S. Davis Cup team in 1989-90 and 1996-97."

Michael plays the second match on after 11AM on Arthur Ashe. He will playthe #15 seed, Fernando Gonzalez of Chile.

Michael will be honored in the evening session probably between the two matches.

Good luck Michael, I hope you end your career on a high note :)

I had a chance to watch Michael Chang back when he was the #2 in the world and I thought he was great. I mean everytime I watched tennis, Pete Sampras would be #1, Chang and Agassi would be either #2 or #3. Those were the days. I remember Pete was #1 for like 4 years straight, truly amazing.

Why did Michael Chang suddenly had a huge drop in form? He can't win a match these days. I remember when Agassi just got married with Steffi Graf, his ranking dropped to something like 140th in the world. He made a great comeback after a year or so and now he's world no. 1 again. Is Chang's style of play not suitable for today's hard hitting tennis? He was well-known for his speed and I don't think he got that much slower? Anyone care to clarify me?

don't know....maybe it's age....if you think about it, out of the four (sampras, agassi, chang and courier) you have to say that agassi has the most endurance...to still play so well against the young guys at his age, it's endurance. courier was first to retire, chang lost form for some years already, and now sampras is going too....

i remem in one year during the australian open, chang and sampras were playing against each other in the 4th round? or quarter finals?? anywayz, sampras' coach had just past away that day or something, and sampras was totally devastated. he even cried during the match...so sad. chang offered to stop the match and reschedule, but sampras played on....one of those classic moments....

GaryDAI
08-28-2003, 03:36 AM
it has to do with age and injuries. He already had to overcome alot but with these added stuff it was really hard to win.

He's already undersized and not as strong. He always gave it his all though. His speed definitely helped him.

see, the point of an underdog winning is that nobody knows, nobody would expect this person to get far until suddenly he's made it into the semis or finals....so no names....i'll just place a bet for somebody outside the top....10 seeds??? how's the tournament going anywho? not much news here except about the aussies.

Dun really watch much live tennis. Have been watching sports center these few days as well and have seen the highlights for the ongoing US Open.

Well, thinks the ladies cat is always crappy with the Serena sisters dominating and thank god they were not in the tourno. Thinks success is really getting to their head and they are strating to have this attitude bout them.

Use to watch tennis when i was studying in Oz as it was a huge sport over there. The Aussies are absolutely proud to the brim bout Rafter and of coz Hewitt.

Thinks Federer is a pretty cool player though. He is definitely one to watch in the coming years. A little disappointed that Sampras has decieded to stop playing.

Always thinks tennis should only be played on grass as that was how the sport originated if i am not wrong. Not a fan of clay courts here.

yeah, i know Mandy was his girlfriend... he was interviewed by Conan O'Brien last time and he announced it (or was it Jay Leno?) :glug:

It's quite dissapointing when Andy Roddick didn't thank his family first. TO me lah..:)
My friends were like ' Kiss her! kiss her!' after Andy won the match.
I got a shock too when I found out Mandy Moore is his girl!

I love tennis! I'm trying to learn to play too, but i'm not that good at it :)
My fav is Marat Safin, well, no wonder, huh :)
any fans of Marat here? :)
By the way, his serves are also terrific! Not only Roddick serves that good, but i admit Roddick is a good player.
What do you all think of Williams sisters? I really don't like them, i think they are too muscular, not a pleasure to watch really, especially Serena. I think women' tennis should be more beautiful. I used to like Martina Hingis, she was awesome, i wish she still played, but oh well...
In today's women tennis, i like Henin-Ardenn

i stopped watching tennis for a while, and theres all these new names that i dont know! i remember when hingis was insulting that french (was it? french) woman, saying she might be a man. hingis played beautifully, but her sportsmanship is terrible ><

i took tennis lessons just last year and i instantly loved that sport. altho it's an exhausting game, it's fun having matches with your instructor/friend and winning :D i have to agree that it's kind of like pingpong in a way but playing tennis is much more fun. and i also love andy roddick.. such a fine man. shame that he's with mandy moore

actually she had an ankle injury and after having an operation to fix it, the doctors said she's no longer able to play tennis on the professional curcuit, so she was forced to quit.

however, there's a rumour that she's going to be back playing this year. apparently she'll be playing in the Australian Grand Slam Open, which will be starting in a couple of weeks time! :excited:

did anybody see Kim Clijster's engagment ring? what a humongous diamond! it must be so heavy.....and expensive!

cinsin
01-07-2004, 05:06 AM
Yeah I heard that too Teresa, they were saying how she's making her comeback at the Australian Open.

I've seen Kim Clijster's engaement ring and it did look pretty big, it's been estimated to have costed Lleyton around $200,000, I think that's in Austrlian dollars.

i used to love tennis when i was a kid. i even used to be member of a tennis club myself, as i loved to show off my non-existent skills. :glug: nowadays, i still like to watch it ocasionally, but as there aren't so many stars that i like i've just grown a bit indifferent toward it. however, i still like tim henman, amelie mauresmo, gustavo kuerten, and juan carlo ferrero.

i was impressed with Marat too, but since Andre is my all time fave (go the oldies!!!) i'll be cheering for Andre tonight. i'm worried tho. Marat has had a couple of tough matches so he would seem more prepared if the match goes to 5 sets, whereas Andre's been cruising through the tournament. a 5 setter might be a bit rough on his older legs. on the other hand, he is very fit tho.....*fingers crossed*

Federer's doing well! his match with Nalbandian proved to be what it was worked up to be: a thriller! it was so tight in the beginning and so tough to call it either way. but Federer always seems to get better as the match progresses. i think he should be able to go thru to the finals by beating Ferrero.

lol...poo!!! poo!! did anyone see the whole media thing...how pat cash was saying how philippoussis wasn't paying attn to his tennis

Philippoussis was enraged by his former coach Cash's comments, who claimed the world No. 10 was more interested in singer Delta than his tennis after his listless fourth-round loss to Hicham Arazi.

"It looked like he [Philippoussis] was up all night doing whatever . . . getting busy," Cash said.

Fair! Fair! Agassi has won everything he could in his life! don't you think that he's won enough already? :)
It's time for others to win!!! like for Marat , hehe
i thought he'd lose actually, when Agassi won 6-1 in the 4 set! but Safin showed himself from his best side!

i dont play tennis but i have lots of fun watching people play. i tried to learn once, but my hand-eye coordination is HORRIBLE, i cant even bounce the ball on a racket, and i have tried many times :bang: i tried to play ping pong during thankgiving break tho! er....i almost broke this plate...but it was really fun! even tho i kept missing the ball...

I AM SOOOO SAD!!!!!!! Agassi lost!!!!!!! Broke his record of 24 years of not getting beaten!!!!! Stupid safin!!! (actually safin's pretty hot! he's 2m tall!!)
But Agassi.... sigh..... Safin's definately got an advantage being so tall.... he move fast and the speed of his ball is like whoa!
The first set should be won be Agassi, if he won it, he has a bigger chance of winning. Agassi's disadvantage is that he's old... so the longer he plays, the more energy loss for him compared to Safin! but u still did a great job Agassi! Love u forever!

damn damn damn damn DAMN!!!

*sigh* it was a good match. both Andre and Marat played so well, i don't think Andre could have done any better than he did. Marat proved to be the better man on the night.

i don't think Andre lost becoz he was lacking in energy. he proved that his energy levels wasn't a concern in the beginning of the 5th set. the way he chased balls down and the way he served, he didn't seem fatigued. in the end, Marat was just too good. his serving was better and his forehand was just too good.

so sad. Andre worked so hard to come back from 2 sets down to win the 3rd and the 4th, it just didn't seem fair on his old body that he should end up losing the 5th. it was strange how he did his trademark bow to the crowd. he only does it when he wins. i hope he's not thinking of retiring!

ok, tonight. Federer and Ferrero. i go for Federer.

Wow I didn't realise there was so many Agassi fans in here. So does that mean I'm the only Safin fan here?

I'm really glad he won, he's played some of the best tennis I've seen so far in the open and he's so funny, his anger problems on the court crack me up and his interviews with John McEnroe are so funny.

Which one is which?!? I'm getting mixed up! Both name is so alike! Gah!

Haha it is pretty confusing, just remember Ferrero is the Spanish one with short hair and Federer is the guy from Switzerland with the long hair.

nupengyou> shanhaigirl is a big marat fan too!! (i think
and i'm glad he won.....me not a fan of agassi

i think safin has matured alot...surprised he won the two five setters...cos i remember in the past people have complainecd about his attitude

i don't kno who i'd like to win tonight,...haven't decided...i quite like ferrero...but still...federer;s pretty cool...

Hey people, what' wrong with you?! Agassi is great of course, but he's getting old, his times have passed! sorry, but it's true! It's Safin's time now! haha :yeah: I do admire Andre for what he's doing, but Safin is THE MAN :)

Federer - Ferero 6:4, 6:1, 6:4!!! i'm pleased with this result! i like Federer!
so, it's Safin - Federer now!!! Go Safin! Go Safin! Go Safin!
Cloudsurfer and nupengyou, let's cheer for Marat!

at first i went for andy roddick, but then he got beaten...then i went for agassi..and now he was beaten by safin...and im guessing now that Safin is going to win the aust open...

i dont think agassi's going to retire yet because of his loss..although he is getting a bit old..i think there was a 10 year difference between marat and agassi...anyway...they interviewed him after the game and he said he was coming back...so thats okay...

federer and ferero's game was quite short and ferero blamed it on injury...so sad for him...

anyways..im finally going for Safin..

ker_ai_teresa
01-31-2004, 11:36 AM
i'm hoping Andre won't retire either, but it did seem out of his normal routine to do his bow when he'd lost.....he could just be thinking about retiring from grand slams.....

can't believe Federer won Ferrero in straight sets! :excited:

well, Justine Henin-Hardenne is the new aust open champ! it was a very tight match esp the final set. Clijsters actually broke back but i think the critical moment was when one Clijster's returns was called "out" by the chair umpire. the hawk eye machine showed that the ball was in fact "in" by about a hundredth of a cm.

2moro, Safin vs. Federer.....i think that if Safin hasn't been fatigued by his last two 5 set matches against Hewitt and then Andre, and he is still able to play at the high level that he's played at, then he will win. but there might be a chance that Federer is fresher and more well rested than Safin. Also, if Safin chucks a fit over a close line call again, that will affect his concentration.

it's a tough call either way, they're both so good and fit. I prefer Federer, mainly coz i simply love his one-handed backhand, but my gut feelings tell me that Safin will take it. :wink2:

but i think the critical moment was when one Clijster's returns was called "out" by the chair umpire. the hawk eye machine showed that the ball was in fact "in" by about a hundredth of a cm.

there seem to be alot of situations, where this was the problem, i saw on a tv news program , where the commentator was saying they get such a big audience and prize money, and it only takes 7 people to operate the Hawkeye machine, why not acutally use it for judging..this may not have been his actual words, but it had this same meaning...

i totally agree with him, its quite often that the ref. calls wrong shots, if there unsure about a situation, cant they like pause the game and check hawkeye or something...because its so useful, why would someone invent it if they cant use it to umpire...this is just my opinion but i think that a wrong call, can affect the outcome of a game..!!

ker_ai_teresa
01-31-2004, 12:05 PM
personally, i think that such machines should either be used by the umpires or not used at all, even for commentators. i hate it when calls are wrong but the margin is so small, no human eye could see, but the commentators make a deal out of these calls just becoz they have the hawkeye to help them see "the truth".

but implementing them would be hard. how many times would the game have to be stopped for the umpire to check calls? players would be bound to want every call against them checked. the momentum of the game would be lost. players shouldn't be so uptight about wrong calls anyway coz it affects every player. how many points have they won due to wrong calls against their opponent? it pretty much evens out in the end i think anywayz. :wink2:

wow, cool! I'm so happy for Henin! i went for her in that match.
as for tomorrow's final, well, of course i'll go for Marat!!! but it'll be too hard for him. I mean all of his previous matches were like 5 sets, the last one with Agassi was extremely exhausting for him. Unlike him, Feder's last match was so easy! only 3 sets! Federer is more likely to win, but i'm praying for Safin!!! He already proved that he's a hero of this AO!

Hi guys... this is my first post in here. That's because I HAVE to talk about the recent Australian Open. Y'know, I admire Agassi for being where he is despite his age. This guy was almost a goner at one time. Personally, I think Brooke Shields is the reason. Look at Agassi now, after marrying Steffi !

Anyway, I was watching the news when they announced that Agassi was minutes away from a step closer to clinching the Australian Open title. I was not watching the match but I've been rooting for Agassi . I was devastated and shocked  to read the newspaper the next day. I mean, look at the scores! *hats off to Safin*

Oh no!!!!!!!!!! He lost!!! Not that i haven't expected that, but still it's so so sad :( I really hoped that he'd win!!! But Marat was so tired after his exhausting matches before, so no wonder he lost! I'm glad for Federer, but Marat deserved the victory so much!!! anyways, Marat is really a hero! He did impossible at this AO, don't you all think so?
Cloudsurfer, i refused to watch SAfin lose too! when they showed it live here i was asleep, so when they showed it again, i already knew the score and just didn't want to watch it!

awww...Safin lost...thats such a shame...he came so far this Australian Open and beat so many...such a shame to see him lose...after roddick lost...i thought Safin was going to win for sure..and i totally agree with you Shanhaigirl that he was just so tired from all the previous hard mathches...and he deserved the bictory alot...

but anyway...Federer did deserve his win...although many were rooting for Safin to win..!!

what a shame..=(

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: yay!!! go Federer!!! go the one-handed backhand!! :D

actually i was surprised that it was a straight sets win for him, i thought it would've been tougher. but i think Safin's 2 previous 5 set matches took their toll on him. ah wellz! men's tennis is going great! look at all the great players in the top 10! Federer, Ferrero, Agassi, Roddick, and now that Safin's making a come back from his injuries, there'll be even more competition!

too bad there isn't the same competition in women's tennis. the William's sisters need to come back!

Shanhaigirl
02-02-2004, 01:07 PM
i'm not a big fan of the Williams' sisters, but maybe you are right ke_ai_teresa, maybe if they were back women's tennis would become more interesting to watch. But still it'd be only Belgium girls and the Williams' sisters. I'd like to see more players like them in the top 10.
well, Russian girls haven't been doing too bad lately, but still they need to improve to reach Henin's, Clijster's, the Williams' sisters level.
as for me i like Myskina very much, i think she's the best of all other Russian tennis players. yeah, some would say that Sharapova is a good one, but i'm afraid she'd become second "Anna Kournikova". well, we'll see...
and i agree that men's tennis is becoming more and more interesting to watch! just wait Safin returns to the topee 10 and like ke_ai_teresa said there'll be even more competition!

yay!!! federer won!!! go federer, federer, federerrrrrr!!! :excited:

i think this was a very good match. safin played really well. after his injuring, he has shown his great tennis skills...and it was just amazing. the way federer played...that was just too much for safin. i'm still glad federer won...(he's cute....:D)

i wonder when the william's sister will come back. they make a good tennis couple together...and i agree with you girls that the women's tennis would be lot more interesting.

would that "thing" be Llyton Hewitt? since they've been dating, i've noticed that she's beginning to look like him, play like him, and act like him "COME ON!!!!!!" there's no denying that she's good, but it's unfortunate that her fiance is him.

i prefer Justine Henin-Hardenne. she's really worked hard to improve her physical fitness and game, which is why no body can really challenge her now coz she's so confident.

same here, ke_ai_teresa, i mean i prefer Henin-Hardenne. as i already said before she somehow reminds me of Martina Hingis(who is my fav).
yeah, Justine really works hard and you can actually see it on the court, i mean she like gives everything she has, she shows all of her skills to get victory, and she succeds!
i can't say what i don't like about Clijsters, i guess like xJaychoux said there is something about her tha's bugging me,hehe

did anyone mention guillermo coria? hehe... he's so cute... so is ferrero but pretty off form these days... must be the chicken pox. i used to support michael chang until he stop winnin matches...hmm... then stop watchin tennis altogether until last year french open. that's when i noticed ferrero and coria... so now i cant wait for the french open to start and witness coria fight all the way to the top... haha... and why do i support both of them? cos they both use Prince rackets like Michael Chang! ok that was just a coincidence...
