Initial D stars zoom by a press conference...but why was Edison so distracted?

Members of the media knew why the cast of Initial D were 66 minutes late for a press conference that lasted only 33 minutes: Their flight from Hong Kong was delayed.

But they never found out the reason betwween Edison Chen's nonchalance throughout the media conference.

Edison walked into the ball-room a minute after fellow cast members Kenny Bee, Shawn Yue, Jay Chou and Anthony Wong settled down in their seats.

The 24-year-old first looked disoriented, then unhappy.

As Kenny and Shawn began talking about the joy of driving in the film -which opens in Singapore tomorrow-Edison started droodling on a writing pad before him and engaged in ocassional chatter with veteran actor Anthony.The latter was also in a laid-back mood-not a typical of the thespian.

When asked by the emcee how he prepared for the role, Edison waved forward, waved his hands and said:"I didn't do any preparation."

Maybe he was tired from the movie's whirlwind promotional tour. At Monday's press conference in Hong Kong, local media described the cast as 'distracted' and Edison as "expressionless".

He had even mumbled an expletive then to drive home the point that half of his clothes on set were his own because those provided were 'not stylish enough'.

But even Anthony was more responsive than him yesterday.He looked just as stern though, choosing to wear his reflecting aviator shades throughout the press conference.

Playing a drunk in the show, Anthony was asked if he drew on his real-life experiences for the role.

"When my wife watched the film on Monday with her friends, they asked me if I'm like that at home too. I told them:"Are you crazy?'"
he deadpanned.

The tension caused by Edison and Anthony's nonchalance was someone eased by banter between Shawn and Jay, who play adversaries of sorts in the film.It was ironic, becuase neither are known
for being too chatty.

In his big-screen debut, Jay plays a high school student with a knack for racing while Shawn and Edison plays street racers who challenge Jay to speed down winding mountain roads.Anthony plays Jay father, a former racing champion.

The movie is based on a wildly-sucessful Japenese comic of the same title. The 'D' in Initial D,incidentally, stands for drifting-a racing technique that allows drivers to navigate a turn in the fastest-possible manner.

When asked about his kissing scene with Japanese actress, Anne Suzuki in the movie, Jay said he was "generally nervous".

Shawn interjected by saying:"You must have been very happy to do it". He pre-empted Jay again when the latter was question about his kissing scene."

To that, the Taiwanese pop prince jokingly held him down by his neck and quipped:"You better stop sprouting nonsense."

Could Edison be feeling left outand jealous of the attention his co-stars were getting?

News of his animosity with Shawn has not gone away since the duo started in 2002's Inferenal Affairs.

At yesterday's press conference, most questions were directed at Jay.

This was most connotative in his reply to the question:How do you feel to be part of the 20 million movie?

"I know many people are looking forward to see Jay act.It's good to be in the same show as him.so people will see me too," said Edison.

However, he slumped back in his seats and went back to looking broody in no time.

As the press conference ended in more banter between Jay and Shawn-this time about the latter trying to show off magic tricks gleaned from jay on set-the media were left pondering with one question amid the light afternoon drizzle ...

What could have driven Edison so off-course?

It is understandable that they must be tired from all the promoting tour and hardly getting enough rest. However, the key factor here is being professional. Not only Ed is tired, Jay and Shawn must be exhuasted from all these busy promotion activities too. Yet as celebrities, they have managed to carry out themselves well in front of the media. It's all about respect and professionalism. Exhaustion is a mere excuse.

I heard about Edison's attitude during the press conference as well. It was all over the papers today. Apparently, some misunderstanding occured that made Edison felt that he was not allocated respect. Edison was late for the press conference because he had a stomache. All the cast was supposed to go into the press conference together but the shaw representitives I believe on the account that the plane was delayed already and that the press have been waiting for an hour, decided to let the other cast in without Edison which led to the misunderstanding.

Nevertheless, I think Edison should have been more professional in his behaviour even though he is known to display his moods as and when he like.

from these reports edison sounds like a punk..even tho i dont really know him too well..butt i do hear that he can be cold hearted and stuff..im sure he's not the only exhausted one round here..im sure the rest are too..at least they can suck it up...could it be a typical case of jealousy? who knows...the media can add so many twists..the only way to really find out is if you were able to witness these conferences and decide for yourself..

i guess edison was probably tired and didn't have much to say. i dont' blame him, he's been to a lot of premieres and was probably all talked out. but jay was so cute. all nervous for the kissing scenee.

thank you for the article. yeaa, edison was indeed rude. yes, he was tired from all the promo activities but shawn and jay ARE tired too but they could be soo active and talk more? i think shawn and jay were in an akward situation too. even if edison didnt wanna talk much, he could have reject the question in a politer way maybe?

i was listening to the radio station yes 93.3. it was said that when the mcee, chen liyi from the radio station asked edison regarding a question (i forgotten abt the qn =P) edison's reply was, "don't ask me any question."

The real reason as to why Edison Chen was 'distracted' during the media conference at Pan Pacific Hotel was published in The New Paper today.

It was reported that he had been the last to arrive at the Initial D media conference, and he was so reluctant to enter the room that his manager had to push him in. Once seated, he simply waved a curt 'hi' before proceeding to doodle furiously on the writing pad in front of him and ignoring the on-goings of the media meet.

So what was the foul mood about, The New Paper asked Edison when he made his way to the media box at the red carpet later. Clearly still pissed off, he said: "I felt it was very disrespectful because they started the media conference without me. I wasn't late, I was there at the meeting place at the time we were supposed to meet. I was caught off-guard when i walked into the room and the press conference had already started."

Edison felt even more wronged when the emcee, DJ Tan Liyi, mistakenly thought he had fallen asleep in the middle of the media conference. He seethed, "I was not sleeping. I was slouching and that's how I usually sit." He added, "It's not that I'm unhappy to be in Singapore, it's not that at all. I'm very happy to be here. It's just that i felt disrespected at that time."

Anyway, I love Edison and Jay so i went down for the Initial D 'red carpet walk' outside Shaw House to see them. I must say Edison was the most obliging of the five stars. (Jay, Shawn, Kenny Bee and Anthony Wong were all there to promote the movie) Edison was the first to walk the 200 metre welcome mat and he was the only one who actually bothered to shake as many hands sticking out from the barricades as he could and he signed most of the things thrust into his face. He also did his trademark lopsided grin for the cameras. He's absolutely adorable!!!! I was kinda disappointed that Jay only waved at us but with the many bodyguards protecting him, he couldn't really shake our hands even if he wants to.

Oh well, I hope to see Jay at Zouk later. He was spotted at the Members bar after his "The One" concert and last year's "Incomparable to Jay" concert held in Singapore. Hmm.. Edison would probably be there since he seems like the clubbing sort. Heehee, I'll check out Velvet as well just in case they'd decided to chill out there. =)

I think all celebrities have their bad days and it just happened for Edison that it was during the Initial D press conference. I guess we ought to give him a break once in a while. But I'm glad to see that Jay was especially talkative that night :D

Interesting :angel: for a man of five and twenty...........well i have a feeling that jealousy over the media attention on jay will get to other co stars who may not be getting the same kind of attention. from this article it sounds like edison is reallie mean and has a big attitude but then u have to understand that they are also regular people can have tempers sometimes and it is not their fault...they have been promotin this movie for such a long time they are tired and exhausted...but then i do have to say that the way edison acted was not something to do professionally..could have showed a better attitude...thanx for the post

i think he has reasons to be in a bad mood. 1) the reporters were about to start w/o him. 2) the cast went in w/o waiting for him to return from the toilet. guess he felt overlooked a little. and he did snap at liyi later at the gala. but that was because he felt disrespected when liyi mentioned something about him dozing off at the conference. which he claimed was untrue. that was his usual sitting position.

but yeah i guess he should have dealt with this more professionally.

Edison has every single right to be angry.. disrespected, accused wrongly for sleeping during a press conference, being treated like crap by the press... geez, every normal person would be angry by such treatment... I know that Edison is nice, he is one of the nicest famous people in asia,man! at least he doesn't just wave and run away at the red carpet... someone who actually takes time to greet his fans should be respected as much as any famous people.. that shows that he cares for his fans... so ppl should stop blaming him for such a simple misunderstanding.. and remember, the media always overexadurate.. like all the Jay News...

Well, Edison is pretty self centered and I'm pretty sure most of you will have to agree with me on that. It is no surprise to me that Edison would be indeed JEALOUS of jay. Almost every movie Edison has started in, he was the one that brought up the movie, he was the main character, (Well, for most parts) and more importantly, it was all about HIM. When he said that "it's good to be in the movie with jay because people will see me too" I knew right then that he was indeed jealous. Well, as much as I <3 edison, he needs to learn to be more open minded. He's not gonna be big for long. No offense, but his music sucks... and it goes miles to be able to compare it with Jay's. Dont' get me wrong, I love edison... but he's just not as talented.. NOT To mention he has been spoiled by his freakin rich dad!
