Megaupload Explained

Megaupload, like YouSendIt, is a website which allows you to upload any of your files to their server for free. Many people use it to share files because it is quite convenient to use and does not requite a lot of computer knowledge.

Megaupload allows each file up to 250MB to be uploaded to their server. The files stays on their server as long as people come and download. However, if nobody comes and download the files after 30 days, the files will be deleted.

One disadvantage of Megaupload is that it tends to take a longer time to upload and download. However, there are some ways to increase the upload and download speed by a bit, at least. We shall find out how later.

================================================== ==

How to Upload to Megaupload

1. Go to the Megaupload (http://www.megaupload.com) site. You will see the screen like this.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/spax49/megaupload/main.jpg

2. Click 'Browse' as shown in the circle above to choose the file which you want to upload. The pop up screen as shown below will appear.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/spax49/megaupload/select.jpg

Simply select the file you wish to upload and then click 'Open'.

3. After selecting the file, remember to fill in the file description as well as checking 'I accept the terms' beside the file description. If you don't, Megaupload will not let you proceed to uploading. Filling up your e-mail and recipient's e-mail is optional. Then, click 'Send'. (Ignore 'Multiple recipients', 'Link password' and 'HTTP / FTP file fetching' as these are only for Megaupload Premium users.)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/spax49/megaupload/send.jpg

4. Now, what you can do is wait for the file to be uploaded. It will show the estimated time left, elapsed time and the transfer rate. The progress bar also shows you how much of the file is uploaded and you can roughly estimate when it will finish uploading. The uploading will depend on your connection speed and the size of the file.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/spax49/megaupload/uploading.jpg

5. When the file is done uploading, you will see a confirmation screen with a URL that will read as "http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XXXXXXXX" where the XXXXXXXX are some random numbers and letters. Copy the URL (Either Right Click and select 'Copy Shortcut (IE)/Copy Link Location (FireFox) or highlight and press Ctrl+C) and paste it in your post and share files with others.

How to Download from Megaupload

1. Click on the URL provided. It will bring you to this page.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/spax49/megaupload/dl.jpg

Wait for 45 seconds before you can click on the button to start the download.

2. Click 'Click here to download' and you are ready to download. Remember where you save the file in the directory.

Tricks for Megaupload

Uploading albums or any other big files
Uploading files to Megaupload tends to take quite slow, especially when you are uploading big files, when the uploading doesn't seem to start even after waiting for a few minutes or so. When you want the files to be uploaded faster, you might want to split up the files with WinRAR (Click here (http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12269) for the WinRAR guide), for example, into parts of 10MB each, and upload the parts seperately. It might be more troublesome but if you want to finish uploading quickly, you might want to choose this option. It will also be more troublesone for other people to download, when they have to download multiple files and combine them.

As for uploading an album, upload the tracks seperately, one by one.

Speeding up downloads
Downloading from Megaupload also tend to be quite slow, especially when you are downloading big files. You might want to use downloading devices like Net Transport (http://www.xi-soft.com/default.htm), Flashget (http://www.amazesoft.com/), or even YSIGet to speed up the downloading process. For FireFox users, you might want to download an add-on extension called Flashgot (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=220) and use it with the downloading devices. These will at least help to speed up the download, maybe a bit, I'm not so sure.

You may want to check out the downloading devices from websites such as www.download.com.

FAQ

Q: What kinds of files can I send through Megaupload?
A: You can send ANY type of file, of sizes up to 250MB. You cannot upload folders or directories however. You would need to use WinRAR (http://jay-chou.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12269) to compress them into one rar file.

Q: Who can use Megaupload?
A: Anyone. Megaupload is a FREE service.

Q: What other alternatives are there to Megaupload for sharing files?
A: Right now at our forums we use Megaupload and YouSendIt as temporary file uploads, ie to fulfill file requests or for extremely large files (over 100MB etc). For most everything else we use Yahoo Briefcases or any other sites that will store files permenantly. As for YouSendIt, it works in the exact same way as Megaupload. However, it deletes the files after 7 days or 25 downloads, whichever comes faster. In other words, the downloads die out very fast. The good thing about YSI is that is has fast download speed, unlike Megaupload.

Q: How long should it take to upload? I've been uploading forever and it is still not done!
A: How long it takes depends on your connection speed and the file size. Uploading to Megaupload tends to be quite slow as compared to YSI and sometimes, it doesn't seem to even start uploading your file after a few minutes, especially big files of more than 50MB. But I still see people who managed to upload big files as I have seen in the forum. So what you have to do is to wait patiently. Another possibilty is that you are simply expecting your computer to be faster than it really is. So just be patient. If you really want it to be faster, you might want to split up your files and upload them seperately. (Refer to Tricks for Megaupload)

Q: Why does the download takes so slow?
A: As I've said earlier, it tends to be quite slow to use Megaupload to download (and upload) your files. I think it is because Megaupload allows files to stay on their server as long as people go to download. So, with many files staying on their server, it will make the download quite slow. One way to speed up the download is to use downloading devices. (Refer to Tricks for Megaupload)

oh, it's actually permanent unless no one downloads for 30 days? i just thought that the file gets deleted after 30 days. and from my experience, it takes a long time to upload to or download from megaupload (the former youshareit) as compared to yousendit. anyway, thanks for sharing the guide.

Yes, it is permenant unless no one downloads it for 30 days. So if nobody downloads the file after 30 days, it will be deleted. This is said from their website:

We will host your file forever for free, until it is unused for 30 days. If nobody downloads your file for 30 days, it is automatically deleted.

Is it okay to start using Megaupload in JCNET now? Because in my opinion, I think it is better than Yahoo Briefcase and YSI.

hmm.. i would actually like to use megaupload instead of YSI and briefcase because i have a hard time using briefcase and of course because YSI's links die out quickly. i wouldnt mind having to wait for my downloads and uploads to take longer.. i have the time now that its summer :P but if its open until the 30 day thing.. that definitely makes me happy! thanks for the suggestion, spax (:

its a pretty cool site i agree.. but it is VERY slow.. i mean VERY slow.. i dunno aobut u guys, but usually if i dl like 60-70mb from YSI its like within a few mins, but when i dl from Mega its takes over 30mins! in my case that is, and the upload is also very slow, well even YSI is slow if u upload alot, but mega is slow too.. not sure which one's slower but i think mega is.. so 4 me i like YSI and Yahoo BC more

its quite good, i mean its direct and i couldnt use net transport or flashget to get the download, but atleast the file was still there...and for YSI links not a lot of people re-uplaod so megauplaod is better...it may take longer but atleast its still there for more than a week and there is bound to be people downloading from it...and its easy to use aswell.

I think we should have a trial run with Megaupload to see if people here would like it. I just tried to upload a 70mb file and it took very long until I had no patience and close the window. I don't know if you guys have the same problem but it would be good if you guys try Megaupload for a while.

I came across a wrestling forum which just started using megaupload. They say it's pretty ok for uploading, which i'm not sure because I've never tried.

But for downloading, the speed is totally horrible!!! I'm downloading a file now which takes 40 mins to download 10MB at a 512kbps connection.

I tried to upload a video clip about 200MB for 2 and a half hour..it's really long and being curious, how long the download takes, it like doesn't really move at all..just asking is it possible does it has any download manager to speed up the speed of downloading? I tried using flashget but it can't let me use it, only can use those normal pop up window to download and it is really slow!!

Wow, this looks interesting. I wonder if it'll become really popular. It's always good to find more places to upload/download from. =)

I don't know why but Megaupload takes awhile for me to download from. Usually my downlaods download at a rate of 20-30kbs but with Megaupload they slow my downloads to 3-4kbs and you know how annoying slow connections are especially when the file I was dl-ing was 60MB! It took 2hrs as opposed to my usual 30mins wait O.o;; Though it is pretty good that the file stays up longer and doesn't expire as quickly as YouSendIt.

Actually the downloading is much much faster if you use net transport to download.. =) Net transport is free and you can get it here (http://www.xi-soft.com/default.htm).

It can be used to download yousendit files too..=)

For those of you who don't know, you will be able to download anything with Flashget, Net Tranport or which ever Downloading devices you have...if you are useing "Mozilla Firefox"...

You will need to download an add-on extension called "Flashgot"...
This will add an option to the download pop-up letting you be able to choose weather you want to download by saveing the files(normal) or by useing your downloading devices..

Click here (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=220)
This will bring you to the Flashgot page...

---
Using it when downloading from Megaupload...just click it like you normally do and choose how you want to download it...

I've never downloaded from megaupload without using devices so I don't know how slow it is and I'm no willing to try too...
Using download devices should help a bit...it won't be that fast though...
What is slow is slow..

I'm fine with Megaupload, I can download things in the past. But now it seems that it no longer works for me. I keep getting this message, "download limit exceeded". I've tried refreshing it several times but I still get the same message. I'm so frustrated!! I want to download some things but I just can't! Anyone can help me on this?

I also have the same problem as yours, when I download using Firefox. I tried using Flashget (a download manager) and it works fine for me. So, try to use Flashget or any other download managers to download. ;)

Download Flashget here (http://www.amazesoft.com/).

If you have anymore problems, feel free to ask!! ^_^

i bought a premium account in megaupload and it's really very worth the money. i got download speeds of 100kb/s and i can do file fetching from FTP/HTTP servers. but for those who dont have the money to purchase one, i suggest using US download manager, as it works tremendously well for Rapidshare and Megaupload.

I think it's an SG thing. The local ISP providers seem to have this "shared IP address" thing going on. I can't DL from megaupload as well.

It wasn't as bad when it started cos fewer people were using megaupload. Not that it's the "in-thing" for sharing, the connection to the megaupload from SGers have increased by leaps and bounds. As such, we'll be constantly denied from the megaupload servers.

I never know that Flashget can help, esp on Megaupload. It is driving me crazy when I clicked on it numerous times and I still can't dl it. Perhaps I should try Flashget.
Thanks for the info.

well, flashget doesn't really work that well for me on megaupload, the dl speed is usually only around 20kbp, while when i dl from other upload site the speed is usually around 250-350kbp. so i don't really think that if any dl manager help at all. it could be that the ppl at megaupload limited the number of dl you can have for each ip address in a period of time and limit you to certain dl speed.

Megaupload has recently changed its policies so if you get the 'download limit exceeded' message, it means that you've exceeded its limit ( i'm not sure how many mb that is but something around 50mbs?!). Then it will block you from its server for one hour before you can download again.

It will work with a different IP but most people are stuck with one IP only.

hope this helps a bit :wink2:

MU's always slow for me. I need to use NetTransport to d/l cuz clicking on the button usually doesn't work for me. I think only MU premium users can d/l at a quick speed from MU.

For me, downloading from Megaupload is sort of like playing lottery. I just keep on trying every once a while and sometime I can get several files a day but mostly just 1 to 2 files a day.
The speed for me is around 30kpbs. It is counted quite fast for me.

You might need to go to www.java.com to dl the java console and/or then go the the Internet option in your IE,then click on the advanced tab, then you should find the row that show java(sun) and then below it there should be use JRE 1.5.XXXXX or something like this, which you should check it to enable it for it to work, and MU should work thereafter.

hope this help.

if you have horrible connection like me, when you disconnect, sometimes, it might restart and clear your download limit! XD i've tried it a few times on accident before, haha. sometimes, when i refresh the 'download limit exceeded' page, it says something didn't go through..forgot the exact words, but that means that your whole limit is cleared, so you can download again x)
