Hi everyone ! I want to know that any one here who's not understand chinese but like Jay's music ? Because I'm one of them. Actually I used to learn Chinese but only one year so I can undersand the meaning of Jay's songs for a little. When I listen to Jay song at my home,my dad always think it's kinda weird because i told him that sometimes I don't know what Jay's singing about. But I always told my dad that i think when people listen to the song ,they don't have to undersand the meaning but they should listen to the beat of the song and the tone of the singer. Then you can understan that this is happy song or sad song. And i think the singer, like Jay,who make the people like his music eventhough they not understand his language is really cool. Do u agree with me?

(PS. I'm thai and i like jay so much because of the reason i told u above and i think his music and his tone are really great. Besides he can make Thai people like his music eventhough most are not understand chinese. Now Jay has a lot of fans in thailand.) :)

Jay ni hen diao !

Well, the only time I would speak chinese is when I'm karaoke-ing or rapping Jay's songs. Other than that... my Chinese would turned out to be a joke on those who's fluent in Chinese.

But to enjoy music, you don't have to care that much about the language barrier. I started to like Jay only by listening to his music, not having the slightest idea of what he's talking about in his songs. BUt after I found more than one songs of Jay that sounds amazing, I curiously started to look for the lyrics, and amazed by them also. (especially Vincent's lyrics). And now, Jay songs is one of the useful tool for me to improve my Chinese.

ilcooljay, and everyone else, a very similar topic has been recently discussed (or still discussing) in depth, and may be found here: http://jay-chou.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4124

Tip: ilcooljay, check if your topic is posted before starting a new discussion. Don't worry, I have made that mistake also countless times...now the search function isn't working, it's a bit tricky...but check recent topics.

Yeah like some of you i can't understand chinese at all, well just a few words. Mostly in cantonese. Hopefully i'll be able to learn soon. Well for you that have seen the comercial, its like apple jacks, the reason we like it is cuz we just do. We don't care if it doesn't taste like real apples, as long as it tastes good. So we look Jay Chou, cuz we do... there....

I wouldn't have a clue what Jay sings, I can't understand Mandarin, besides the basic Ne How Ma?

But I look up all the translations, ping yin and just love the music for the music itself. . .

I think I could like it without knowing what it is about. I mean, an jing, you can really tell its a sad song without even knowing what the lyrics are. . .

yes i'm definitely sure there's a lot of people love jay's music even though they don't understand mandarin...well, i'm one of them. i'm indonesian born chinese, and no one in my family understand mandarin. i used to learnt it for about 6 months & that's just bcause i want to be able to sing jay's song....wuaah but it's still difficult for me. know what? i surfed internet to get jay's lyric cause the album released here don't attached it. and when i got it i have to translate it into pinyin (i use a software....sooo manually!!!!)
but i think it's ok not knowing the words or the meaning, i still can enjoy it veeeery much!!! i'm still waiting for his fourth album to be released here...hopefully soon....ooohh can't wait!!!

hehe...i can only understand VERY basic chinese cos i took this beginners chinese course in my first year at uni...but i've got a LONG way to go till i'm fluent and can communicate in chinese. I mean my cantonese (i also speak hakka) is fine...i just really have to get cracking with my mandarin. But you know, I've learnt a lot from listening to Jay. Who said idolising someone wasn't educational? :bleh: ..hehe

Ha ha ... me too, I am a Thai and don't know chinese..but Here in Thailand many people especially teenagers was influenced by Taiwan or Chinese singer eventhough we can't understand what they sing at all !!! But the music that touchs us ..you know human always try the new things..I found that Jay's style is quite rare and different to thai songs and I like it much..

Anyway , the most difficult for us who can't understand chinese is WE HAVE TO SPEND MORE TIME TO TRY TO READ THE LYRICS ( IN ENGLISH WRITING) AND SING ~!!!! That's why i am going to joy the Chinese class soon...

Yep, me too! I'm chinese but i nv learn mandarin b4 so i can't read or write chinese characters(I can only write a few like jay's name & song titles)
I always look up the translations 4 his lyrics which makes the songs even more meaningful than b4!

I don't understand anything but I'm buying his CDs. His songs are great, there's so much variety in each of his albums and that's what I like about his music, it never gets repetitive.

Anyway, I know there are tons of people who don't understand Chinese and still listen to Chinese music. Thai people for instance... :D

U know what icooljay I had posted a similar post like yours quite long ago in www.jaychou.com and reading yours is like reading mine . Ha ha.

Before I like Jay , I never interested in Chinese or other Asian artists. Well let say, I don't like them at all and I thought I never will. Until I heard Ye Ye Pau De Cha in Panasonic add on the TV, I started to think " What a great music" and later I found out more about this guy called Jay, and now I am soooooo addicted to his look and his music

Now I'm into Jay's music though I don't understand it at all and I have never leant Chinese. I enjoy his music and the way he sings. I also enjoy other asian songs like A Better Day from JTL , too. Can't believed Jay really changed my attitude!!!! :excited:

2 days ago, saturday, i was playing Jay's CD in my office... my malay colleague was sitting behind and when she heard "Yi Fu Zhi Ming", she came over and told me that she love that song!! i was like.. :excited: wow! and asked her why, she said that the melody and the feel of the song is really great.. and she called "San Nian Er Ban" the ping pong song.

Haha...the same here.I'm not from chinese school that's why i couldnt write and read chinese words.I have to rely on the traslation and the pin yin of Jay's lyrics to sing along with him and as well as to know what his songs mean.Sometimes, i would even ask my mom to help me to traslate Jay's songs...ehehe.And oh...the one and only Jay's song i could sing from the beginning to the end is "An Zing" (without the help of the traslation lyrics)..i just listened to it for like.......many many times and now i think it's just a piece of cake for me to sing An Zing :yeah: My next target: is to sing Qing Tian from the beginning until the end and from the end until the beginning..lol (kiddin') :D

I know of a Malaysian malay member in here - shai^cello .

Anyway, I don't understand much chinese and it's such agony to hear Jay on the radio (when he came to Malaysia) and to watch his interviews and not know what is happening.

But thanks to the great bunch of translators here, I am able to keep up with some of his news. :flowers:

i speak cantonese but i've been taking up mandarin language classes this year since i dropped it 8 years ago, i was doing it to get extra credit but now i totally suck at it so now i'm doing it so i can understand jay's songs. i've learnt heaps of mandarin from listening to his songs and from watching television.

when i first listened to fantasy 2 years ago i didn't really understand and couldn't read the lyrics but now when i go back and listen to it everything makes sense.

i'm a filipina and currently exploring music from the east and I am definitely ecstatic that i ran into Jay's music. Even though I fail to understand most of his songs lyrics (i do understand a few phrases here and there), it's the music that counts. and jay's music really can cross that language barrier.

though it would be nice to understand the song lyrics. i just hope i'll have time to learn mandarin...

and it would e nicer if his albums would be available here...Ü

I don't understand a word of chinese and I'm Chinese! Is that just not right? It's all my parents fault, they never taught me or my brothers, so I miss out on the words Jay is trying to express, but I do read the translations I see on the Fourm. I have always listened to Asian music, anything good and asian is alright with me, but for Jay, he's just naturally good..

If you're Chinese, and you don't think your Chinese is good, going back in the summer or whatever really really helps...I'm fluent in Mandarin (kinda? lol my parents say i suck at it but i understand most of jay's songs) and can read & write some (yay Chinese school! :) ) but I'm also really into korean music..which of course I can't understand..maybe a few phrases here and there. So I understand how you guys feel.

I don't understand chinese at all. But music is music, sometimes you don't have to understand the language but you could absorb the great tunes (that jay compoesed). and make you feel great at anytime. :yeah: Take lots of us for example, we can't understand a thing in jay's song but we can sing along, the tunes lyric stick in your head. go completly out of control listening to something you don't understand.Wow...Diao aye! :excited:

Yes, I believe not only the lyrics is important, but the actual music on the score is very important too. Jay has composed so many great songs that I makes us still feel comfortable listening to him even though we don't understand much of it ^^
I just borrowed the music book of his from my friend, I boy....Its SOOOO COOL@!!

I speak very little of Mandarin...and mostly I know nothing about the meaning of the lyrics in Jay's songs. I like the music. It is catchy and soothing to listen to, even the rap ones. After I check the translation...The more I'm in love with the songs. He composes all the songs in such a way that they are 'emotionally well-expressed'...The music/melody really depicts the lyrics very, very well.
Hehehe...That's why he is so DIAO!

I agree lee hom is also a nice singer, I have this VCD of Jay Chou vs. Wang Lee Hom....It was quite interesting to watch *^^*....very good music even though half of the time I did not understand.

I'm a chinese who knows nothing bout writing in chinese or even speaking in mandarin  (just know how to speak a bit of "out tuned" cantonese - sad but true)
That's why i only listened to english songs since young and i think chinese songs are boring, ordinary and imitation to the western ones...but hey THANKS to Jay, now i really loved listening to chinese songs as well and even start learning to speak fluently in cantonese and picking up mandarin as well :)
The first song that caught my attention by this talented guy was "kai bu liao kao", when he was the featured artiste of the week at the Myfm radio station in Malaysia...then i started to listened to the other songs in the Fantasy album and GOsh...the songs are marvellous especially when it is composed by the singer himself also (in this entire world, i guess everyone knows how to sing but composing songs are just totally different) and i start to pick up his previous album Jay and look forward to his compositions up till now...
and you know what, the marvellous thing is that i can utter mandarin slangs 99% perfectly well when i'm singing his songs...other than that in my daily conversations, it's juat sooooo embarassing
Love ya Jay  and i'll be by ur side now and forever

Alright, I finally decided to post in this forum after 2 months. I'm a born and raised American. I'm from Nebraska, one of the "whitest" states in America. I didn't know anything about Chinese, or Asian culture until I went to Taiwan this last summer to teach. That's where I was introduced to JAy and his music.

I do speak some Chinese, and can even read some, but I am by no means fluent. I think there are a lot of us here (which is self0evident by the vast amount of posts in this thread.) To quote wackycashew, "I think it is amazing that Jay's music can touch and bring together people no matter what language they speak." It is true. Jay is a musical genius, and you don't need to speak Chinese to realize that. Hell, he doesn't even usually write the lyrics to his songs.

So there it is. I'm the American cowboy in an almost entirely Asian forum talking about an artists hardly anybody in my home has heard of........

and it's f*ckin great.8)

How long have you been learning manderin cowboy?
I'm an asian born in NZ, and all the Chinese I try to talk to (after learning manderin) say I have this european accent while I speak, is that the same for you?

Read again Jenen, I'm an American not a European. Cowboys don't much like being confuzed with Frenchies. I'll forgive the mistake this time. :wink2:

I was first introduced to mandarin in Taiwan this summer (and yes I did wear my cowboy boots there). I had 7 weeks of immersion to learn what I could. I came out with a lot. I've been told my accent is really good, but I deffinitely sound like a "foreigner" because my grammar and a little cuz fo the pronunciation. I have the hardest problem with the tones.

and i just bought his latest album which comes in 11 mv of the "Ye Hui Mei" album and two new songs!!! He just look so superb macho in his "Qing Tian" mv...and the new songs are very meaningful and touchy...

Hmm...after reading all of the posts here i don't feel too bad about being Chinese and not knowing mandarin well. I am learning to speak mando and conto, and the only way to do it is thru practise and trial and error. Though my mandarin might not be perfect at least it's understandable...It's never too late to learn, so cowboy, jia you! It's admirable that you're willing to learn about other cultures.

I do like Chinese music in general and Jay's music in particular has made me notice Chinese music even more. Though i might not understand what they're singing about, I mean, I listen to jpop and kpop as well! but there's always the option of pinyin and English translations to solve that obstacle. It's true what cashew said, that Jay's music can transcend the language barrier and definitely you don't need the lyrics to know wheather he's singing a happy or sad song. Though with Jay and Fang Wen Shan, you never know for sure what the lyrics might mean.

well, i guess me one of them guys who doesn't know mandarin at all except only a few phrases which i hate cos i dont understand what jay is singing except in An Jing, when he says ' wo hai yao ai ni' which is all i know  and oh yeh yes and no

i am also another who is chinese who doesnt know how to read chinese fluently because i have been studying chineses for a good 6-7 years and ive totally forgotten most of the words and you will never guess that chinese is my first language :glug:

even though i dont understand what jay is saying i can always feel the expression and emotion that jay puts in his song and the mood of the song too. It helps with the translations that other j-c.net members have done to help others understand jay's songs better, which i am truly grateful to youse all :)

Its weird, cos my dad knows a little mandarin but he doesnt understand what jay is singing maybe because he doesnt like his type of music eh

Well i dont understand what he is saying but still i love his songs anyways

i agree, it really is frustrating if you cannot read the articles or the understand the interviews ~

because of jay, i am starting to discover other great asian/chinese artists. david tao is an example. he also has a great voice and his songs are similar to jay's, r&b-ish. i am also learning mandarin because i watch chinese entertainment shows hoping to get a glimpse of jay. i guess i have been improving. :)

I'm learning Chinese at uni, and I knew a tiny bit from friends in high school. I actually love not knowing everything that is being said in Jay's songs, because every time I come back to a song I haven't heard for awhile I might understand a little more than before - and its really encouraging; just like discovering more about the songs with each new listen :)

My best friend's Vietnamese boyfriend does! He doesn't know any Chinese nor does he usually listen to Jay's style of music, but he really likes Jay and David Tao. He's a musician who writes, plays the guitar and DJ's... so he's probably pretty picky when it comes to music. Just goes to show how language cannot hurt good music from spreading. =)

*raises hand* me! I'm a filipino/filipina, I don't know how to speak chinese (canto/mando) but I'm learning... I understand small words/phrases like "wo ai ni", "ni ai wo" etc.
and I usually don't listen to the lyrics of the song (I know weird) even for english song I don't listen to the lyrics... I always listen to the melody/beat because I think thats what makes a song nice or enjoyable and when I listen to songs I usually make up a dance for it on the spot hehe (the beat/melody helps me with dance moves and stuff...but unfortunately I'm not a good dancer, I'm just an amateur =P)
Jay's songs are good and Jolin's and F4 and twins and Edison and...haha I can go on forever.kk.

i totally agree with you all the way ilcooljay..im vietnamese, but i love jays music!! i agree you dont have to understand the music in order to enjoy it....the melody n tone are enough to understand it..of course..you can alwayz go back n look up the lyrics..kekeke..in most cases i guessed right about what the song may be about...jay is just good like that!!

I speak cantonese so I listen to alot more canontese/HK music and when Jay was creeping into the HK music industry I was sort of skeptical about listening to him. But I ended up listening to him because so many friends recommend me to and I'm totally in love with it!!!

Of course now I really want to learn mandarin and I'm kinda slowly learning by watching and listening to Jay XD I dislike how some other of my skeptical friends say to me but you don't understand mandarin so why do you listen to him?? But there are translations and I guess its also the music that makes it cool to listen to. Like people like a song for the music but then they realise what the lyrics are singing about and its like that for me with Jay XD

Hey JayWah , i'm oso a Vietnamese ... Well, i became addicted to Jay like love at first sight , man. Still remember the day i watched his video An hao on MTV ...since then i've gone crazy over this music genius ....

His tone and music are simply addictive , no mater what language you speak or understand. But not to forget that the lyrics add up a lot to the "DIAONESS" of Jay's music ...

me!!i never like to listen to chinese songs since i was young.all this while ive been listening to english song cos i tin chinese songs no quality.sorry,im jus being honest.n ive never paid a ticket for chinese movie cos i tin is a waste of money except jacky chan's movie.but now no longer watch his movie.but jay's songs are really an eye-opener for me especially "papa has returned".dat song was actually my life, the words i wanna say all this while.bcos of jay, i start to to have confident with chinese music industry(not hong kong one pls).i start to watch chinese entertainment show jus to catch a glimpse of him altho i dun really know what's happening cos the taiwanese chinese is kind of hard for me as new learner. i start to tune in to chinese radio station jus in case they may play his songs.some of the lyrics were alien to me with addition the way he sings but i like the rhythm very much.whenever i see jay news or jay on tv,my frens n boyfren will be in deep trouble.they will be forced to translate to me word by word.pity them.really appreciate them.my boyfren used to cut short the translation n i will scold him.he is a big fan of jay also.if there's any new jay's concert vcd,he be the first one to grab it.n he is more anxious than me when he sees jay news on tv.he will ask me to keep quiet cos he wans to listen(cos i keep pestering him to translate to me).He is a very supportive fan, always stood by jay's side.actually it was him who told me alot of jay's stuff until i gradually lik jay even more.there's was once he bought the incomparable concert vcd n i accidentally dented the box,his face turned dark.it was jus a box,the outer one somemore.n even say that i dunno how to take care tins in a raised voice.

I wonder why.. i think the tune of the music is too fantastic, that don't even need to understand what he is saying and yet still love the songs! ... But I do understand cantonese.. :) pretty fluent actually.. How nice if Jay sings in cantonese.. *hehe* his cantonese is really cute in his new movie Initial-D

Hey,I see I'm not alone!

I can't speak Mandarin for nuts, but I somehow manage to spout really crappy Cantonese for the sake of communicating with elder relatives. But I agree with Nikky, that looking up lyrics of Chinese songs do help. However- I think the words used are rarely ever conversational- I can't imagine using em' in everyday conversation!

Hi All, this is a very good topic, i also dont know much about mandarin but when i heard jay song i feel something different than the other song, the way he create a song and chose the tone is extremely good, i'm a music player as well and hear his music only is enough for me to know that he's really one in million singer that can do this, especially his words, after knowing most of the meaning from his song i became more and more like it, somehow when i heard his song i feel like i experienced also the situation that he describe in his song. i never know any good singer that can create a song the way he did, bravo jay!!!

So i understand a little of jay's songs.. but even if i don't understand it, i can still sing it because i know how to read pinyin :-) . But before, i didn't understand a single bit and still <3ed him

i'm an australian with a filipino background.. before i was introduced to lee hom and jay's music, i didn't know any mandarin at all..

and now i'm learning slowly through music :D it's such amazing compositions.. and while i believe that leehom's the one to sing for love songs, as the melody usually has a very wide vocal range.. jay's instrumentals are what keeps me coming back to jay :D

i'm now very interested in learning how to speak mandarin, simply so i can understand jay's songs without having to look up the translations :-)

That's a funny question because I think if I understood mandarin then I would've joined a mandarin Jay Chou fansite knowing that they may have better sources about Jay then we do.

Overall,I think most people here don't understand mandarin, but we all still appreciate the artistic beauty & depth of Jay's music & that sexy voice.

i can only understand a limited amount of mandarin. and so, I still can't understand most of the chinese songs i hear. but what i like about Jay Chou's songs is that you don't need to understand the words to know what he's singing about. you can feel it just by listening to the melody and his voice. ^^

yup. that's me too. lol. my grandfather was chinese (canto), but no one taught me.=( i enjoy all asian music even tho i don't understand, which is probably why i don't like too many Jay ballads, cuz understanding the lyrics is part of liking a ballad. hopefully i'll learn one day.

I only know a little Chinese, and when I heard Jay's song or other Chinese songs, I usually understands like 10-20% of the lyrics. But that was a great achievement for me, since although I'm an Indonesian born Chinese, me and my whole family cannot speak chinese at all. I begin to learn Chinese when I was like 18 or so, and gave up 2 months later.. Since then, I only learn Chinese from movies and of course songs.. ^_^ I think even though we don't really understand what jay is singing, we can still love his songs..It just like there's somethin good in those tunes n melodies..

that would be me! but i'm trying very hard to learn and understand him. i actually have a lot of friends who can't understand Mandarin and yet are completely in love with his music. there were about 20 of us who went to his concert in hk last december and in that group, only 5 persons can understand Mandarin.

haha I would be one who only understands perhaps 10% to 20% of his lyrics.. I'm glad I still understand the message he sent through his songs!!

it's great to understand 100% of his songs but I bet it would be sad to keep thinking of them cos Jay is just too good in "sad" songs!

I am one of this kind that can't understand and speak in Mandarin but still likes his song. Of course I will do some homework by finding the translation for the lyrics so that I know what the song is about. Well, at least I can sing along some slow songs like An Jing by memorizing the lyrics. :D

It's awesome to see so many... I don't even understand anything and yet he's my favorite artist of all time. I like every song he has and though I don't get the meaning behind them until I read the lyrics, it just sounds really good. I also listen to a lot of other Asian music that I don't understand at all. "You don't have to understand music to like it"

well.. i get cantonese but not mandarin, if i was really crazy about the song i would look the lyrics up and go along with the song cos i can still read chinese..

but i often get the meaning of his slower ballads than his fast rap songs and some of his zhong guo feng cos the lyrics are too hard to understand!

I know absolutely no mandarin but am a crazed fan :D
I can basically understand the emotions in the song since well Jay's such an amazing singer ><
I also come to appreciate the background music and all the rhythm/overlaying tunes and instruments playing, the timing etc. And i just love it even more.
The real weird thing is though when i can sing it after playing it many many times like my most play is 833 for one song i think? So when i sing it in my head i'm like
"I have no idea what i'm saying. Oh well!"

Mostly, like everyone else here, I listen to his music for the beats and melody!

I am a white Canadian girl, and I have only taken a few basic Mandarin lessons last year. The rest I have learned from Mandarin music/drama. I could only understand about a quarter of what Jay said at the Toronto concert. I plan to keep on learning, because I have loved Mandarin since the first time I heard a Mandarin song(I think it was Wakin Chow) several years ago. Then I heard Jay and was completely mesmerized with his music. Now I listen to tons of Mandarin singers/bands, but Jay is always my favorite.

I can try to speak a little Mandarin now, but I think I still am very hard to understand because I need way more practice.

when i first heard jay's songs my mando SUCKED (still does now, but to a lesser extent. lol) but i absolutely loved them!
which just proves how awesome his music is if it can overcome such a language barrier.
GO JAY! ^_^

i dont know any mandarin except basic things like hello how are you and stuff. i always ask my parents to translate jay's songs for me and i do read the translation.
i just need to know what the songs mean so i can feel it too ! :p

but my parents say that his lyrics are beautiful words so they dont quite understand it too since my parents weren't born in china or taiwan ~
