Yahoo Briefcases Explained
Yahoo briefcases is a free serivce provided by Yahoo to allow its registered members to upload files to the internet so that they may store them or share with friends. Click Here (http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc//home) to go to the Yahoo Briefcase Page.
We use Yahoo Briefcases as permanent file storage. Each account can upload a maximum of 30MB with no file larger than 5MB.
================================================== ==
How to Upload to Yahoo Briefcases
Part 1: Preparing your files
Since no file can be larger than 5MB, you must archive any file larger than that with winrar. If tour files are all under 5MB you can skip down to Part 2: Uploading to Yahoo
Select the file to be archieved, right click it and select "Add to archive... "
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoowinrar01.jpg
Now in the window that appears, be sure to set the "Split to volume" option to 5,000,000 as shown below, then click OK.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoowinrar02.jpg
A window like this will appear to show you the progress of your archived file. You don't need to click anything, just wait for it to finish.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoowinrar03.jpg
Note: The process of archiving takes a lot of system resources so it is recommended that you are not running other programs that also require a lot of resources.
When completed, you will be returned to the original window with your original file and the new rar files
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoowinrar04.jpg
Your files are now ready to be uploading to a Yahoo Briefcase.
Part 2: Uploading to Yahoo
Go to the Yahoo Briefcase Main Page (http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc//home). You will need a Yahoo account, so you can use either an existing account or make a new one. If you are making a new one, click the "Sign Me Up" link which I have circled below. If you are signing in with an existing account, you can just sign in below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoosignup.jpg
Note: The information you fill in for a new account does not need to be accurate, however please use a real e-mail. As far as I know, you will not recieve any e-mails besides one confirmation e-mail, but I would still recommend giving a fake junk mail account. The reason we ask you to do this is that if Yahoo decides to shut down your account for inactivity, they will always e-mail you first to confirm with you that you no longer want the account. If you gave a fake e-mail you would be unable to respond and the account would be closed and the files you uploaded, gone.
After you are done registering or logging in, you will be taken to this window. On the left hand side you can see a list of all the folders in your briefcase. By default, you have one folder named "My Documents." Under that is a bar which shows how many MB out of your alloted 30 are being used.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoobriefcase01.jpg
To add a file in the "My Documents" folder simply click the "Add" link next to it as I have circled on the left, or if you want to create a new folder click on the "Add File" Link that I have circled on the right.
If you are creating a new folder and clicked "Add File," you will be taken to this screen
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoobriefcase04.jpg
Simply select the option "Create a new folder named" and enter a name for your new folder and click one of the "Select" buttons on the far right side.
You will now be taken to the uploading screen
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoobriefcase02.jpg
Click "Browse" and select the file you wish to upload. Remember you can only upload 5MB at a time, so most likely thats only 1 file at a time unless you are uploading really small files. In the "Name" bar you can rename your file. This will become the new filename for the file in the Briefcase.
Scroll down and click the "Upload" button.
Now you just wait for it to upload. You will see a bar similar to the one on top which reads: Files are Uploading...Please wait
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoobriefcase03.jpg
When your upload is complete it will change to the bar on the bottom. You can then choose to go to your folder and view all your files or upload more which will take back to the last screen.
Part 3: Linking to the forums
After you have uploaded all your last file, click on the "Back to Folder." If you get the "Server Not Found" screen, refer to the "Tricks for Yahoo Briefcases" section to find a way to get around that.
Check off all the files you want links to as shown below
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoolinks01.jpg
Then click 'Email'
On the next screen, fill out the your e-mail that the links will be sent to. (Remeber this must be a real e-mail so that you can actually check it and get the links) The Message box is optional, but if you are uploading to a lot of briefcases it will help keep your links organized.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoolinks02.jpg
Now go check your email. You should see links to all the files. To get the URL, right click on the link, choose 'Copy Shortcut' to get the address.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahoobriefcaseemailfinal.jpg
You can now paste the into your post. Wherever you want to insert the link, click the Insert Hyperlink button http://www.jay-chou.net/forums/styles/jcnet-default/editor/createlink.gif
Type the name you want to be displayed, (ie: Jay's new MV) click OK, then in the next prompt, paste the link (Ctrl+V)

How to Download from Yahoo Briefcases

Tricks for Briefcases
How to view your folders when Yahoo is slow
Ok this trick can be used when after you uploaded all your files and click on "Back to folder" to e-mail the links to yourself but Yahoo keeps giving you "Server cannot be found." Its very frustrating because you just spent all that time uploading and now you cant see the files to e-mail yourself the links. This happens to me every so often and this is what I have learned works.
Go to the "Briefcase Home" page. Often I find it is fastest to go back to the upload page, as it is the only page that will show and not give you the "Server Not Found" error and in the upper right hand corner click on the link that says "Briefcase Home." Click on the link after "Your Briefcase address" as shown below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/yahootricks01.jpg
That will take you to your folders page. You most likely still cannot access the list of the files inside the folder, but at least you can e-mail yourself the folder or any files that are not in a folder.

FAQ
Q: How much can I upload to a briefcase?
A: Each yahoo account is allowed one briefcase which can hold a maximum of 30MB. However, each individual file cannot be over 5MB.
Q: If the maximum file size is only 5MB, how can we share files over 5MB?
A: We use a program called WinRAR. Make sure you read the walkthrough to find out how to split up your file.
Q: My file is over 30MB, what should I do since a briefcase can only hold 30MB max?
A: That just simply means you will need multiple breifcases to upload the entire file. So for example if your file is 40MB, you will use winrar to break it down into 8 parts, and then upload 6 to one Yahoo account, and the 2 remaining parts onto another account.
Q: How long do files stay there for?
A: Files uploaded to a briefcase are permanant. This is why we prefer to use briefcases over other file sharing options such as yousendit which only keeps files for 7 days.
Q: Im sure I did everything right, but when I click on the links that I e-mailed to myself in the end, I get a "Server Not Found" page?
A: Sadly, yahoo servers can be unreliable at times. There are times when your links will randomly go down. This does not mean the files are gone, but instead the Yahoo server is having problems and you simply cannot connect to them. While there is nothing you can do about it, do not worry, the server will come back sooner or later.
Q: How do you make it so one link will show multiple files instead of just one?
A: When you click a Yahoo Briefcase Link and you get to a page with multiple files, that means the link was the link to a folder.
Q: My upload has been going on forever and I am sure it is done by now, how can I check?
A: There is a problem with Yahoo similar to that of YSI when sometimes it gets stuck on the uploading screen. What you can do is right click the "Briefcase Home" Link in the upper right hand corner and select "Open in a new window." Look in your folder and see if the file has been uploaded already in the new folder. This way it wont disturb the upload in case it is not done yet.
Q: I finished uploading but the files are not there? What did I do wrong?
A: Yahoo had a cronic problem for sometime of showing the "Upload Complete" screen when in fact the file had not been uploaded. Sadly there is nothing you can do but to upload the file again. Do not fear however as I have noticed that Yahoo has gotten their act together and this problem rarely ever happens anymore.
