View Full Version : Hey Asians! Is drinking a problem for you?

I just read up on some papers about aldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency in Asians. Turns out that an unknown percentage of Asians, somewhere around 33% estimated, have that problem. Aldehyde dehydrogenase is an enzyme required for metabolization of alcohol.

People with that problem get plastered after a shot or so of tequila.

I'm not a drinker, but I've had alcohol (on accident) before. Went completely ballistic, so I'm probably one of those people. It would also explain why Asian girls always go crazy at parties..

Are you sure about those results? Honestly, ive never seen any asain drinkers, well just a few, down here in melbourne (australia). Asians are surely too busy worrying about study to be drinking, and also I guess asian parents will absolutely kill their kids if their caught drinking. Most drinkers I seen are all those white guys/girls. I was raised in a typical asain family, therefore ill probably live the rest of my life not drinking and smoking.

wow maybe its just cuz i go to a school fo 75%+ asians, and EVERYONE drinks haha...and yes lots get wasted after one shot of anything =P

you would be surprised....there are a lot of people drinking, even hella smart people. believe me. i live in one of those places where the school is half asian and students are driven to succeed in school. HELLA smart people get wasted.

i don't have that problem
but i know afew of my frens really can't hold their alcohol...

some can't even finish one bottle of beer whilst others turn a bright shade of red after a sip...

06-02-2005, 04:55 AM
Haha I'm one of those people that turn bright red after a sip of alcohol.

Although I don't get wasted after just one shot, it usually takes about 6. Then I just pretty much lay there for the rest of the night. It takes me about 2 hours before I can stand up straight again >.<

06-02-2005, 05:56 AM
And I thought we could build up an immune against alcoholic if you drink often.
I can finish a bottle of beer without being drunk.
A tequila shoot is ok for me too. But it is hard to judge cos different places will have different amount of alcoholic content.
My friends don’t seem to have such problem but again I don’t think most of my friends drink much. Usually it is more for relaxing than to go get drunk. So we drink moderately.
I sounds like a health campaign.

i have a problem with turning red.
so my parents KNOW when i've been drinking
it takes about four hours to get a drink out of my system, so that shows how crappy my body is in processing alcohol.

but i've only been tipsy, so i don't know.
i have asian friends who drink and just throw up continually for two hours afterwards and never pass out. which is unfortunate for them.

nah snowflake...
you dun sound like doing a healh campaign...
juz that you really r only... :bleh: jokin... :wink2:

hmmm... i'm a social drinker..
i can drink alot but usually get red after a bottle too...
some say it's good.. cuz that means your blood is circulating.. or sth like tat..
but i think it's bad cuz my mum would knw that i've been drinking..
i usually dun drink alot.. only a few drinks.. until i feel tipsy then i would stop..
cuz i understand that some ppl dun limit their drinkin and usually drink until they pass out or vomit..
thankfully that never happen to me...

Man I totally can't drink. After a few sips of Heineken and I go all red and giddy-ish. I can't imagine what would happen to me if I went drinking in a pub! Ew.

Anyway I think alcohol is overrated and everyone is doing it so to be different, I just don't do it. Hahahahahahahaha.

06-04-2005, 07:03 PM
drinking is fun...when done in moderation...i use to be like you hisashuiluv14 not drinking to be different...then i discovered how fun it can be hehe :clink:

getting plastered after one shot??? haha that would make 'getting happy' real cheap for them...so in some ways they are lucky hahaha they are a cheap drunk

i know heaps of asians that drink...they don't get plastered but they sure do get drunk faster then my white friends

06-05-2005, 07:24 AM
i think it's okay to like drink moderately...but not to the point when you pass out. personally i have yet to drink, but i'm not gonna condone ppl who just drink moderately. but if they pass out and throw up...that's kinda gross.

I do drink and it is inevitable that you drink when you visit pubs or clubs because they sell mostly alcohol there. I do turn red when I drink although I do not have to worry about my parents finding out as they have no problems with me drinking. So far, I have only been quite drunk once and it was to the extent that I cannot even walk straight. Other than that, I have managed to keep myself quite sober whenever I go drinking.

I have seen people who are dead drunk along pubs and clubs and seriously, I do not see the point of drinking till you are dead drunk. It will be hard for you to get home and it is also dangerous especially for girls. Furthermore, you will need someone you trust to take care of you. Drinking is bad for the liver I heard but I think it is okay to drink some once in a while or go to pubs and clubs to relax once in a while. As what they all say, eat or drink everything in moderation. :wink2:

Mayb its bcuz of the culture, i think. Well what more can i say? As a non-drinker, drinking brings u no good. Don't do it, and don't try to.

What I think is hysterical is that the majority of those of you who say that drinking is bad, is under the legal age at which you CAN drink.

KendoTiger
06-18-2005, 04:19 AM
Still, it doesn't mean that they haven't.

Besides the alcohol served by some families at special events, I know quite a few people who are under-age, yet manage to have an unlimited access to alcohol ~ mainly college students and high schoolers.

I believe that social drinking is alright. Alcohol isn't as bad as smoking or anything, but it should only be done in moderation.

Yeah. Three of my classmates walked into a 7-Eleven and bought a few bottles of vodka when we had some stupid class chalet thing four years ago. That made them (and me) 15. :-) One of my friends drank so much vodka at the chalet that she threw up all night. Not a pretty sight.

I say, don't drink unless you can hold your liquor. Puking your face out doesn't make you look good. Hahahahah!

haha lol, poor asians.

i havent ever drank, but ive been at the parties where everyone gets wasted and stoned. cept.. none are asian bc my school has about 3 asian people.

scarletwillow

I will never drink for non-business purposes or ever get stoned, period.
The only time I will ever see fit to hang out with people that get drunk or stoned is so I can steal their money when they are out.

Pugwash
06-18-2005, 10:49 PM
I temporarily stopped drinking because well, it kills a lot of your brain cells. You may not notice right away but, your mental health is declining gradually. Besides that fact, I always got hung overs. I could drink like a litre of water before and after I consumed alcohol and yet, I got a massive hang over. There was a point where I was drinking every week so, it was kind of weird to get a hang over everytime, even if it wasn't drinking heavily or hard alcohol. Not to mention, sitting in a physics class listening to theories of light and waves while hung over was not fun infact, it made my head hurt even more.

Whether that statistic is true or not, I think the main factor is your height and your weight. It's evident that a shot of 40% vodka will be more effective on a 5' girl who weighs only 90lbs in comparison to a male 6' and 200+ lbs. I've been to many parties and I don't see any pattern race-wise when people get drunk.

I've heard about this problem...also known as the "Asian Glow" I don't have it. Bwahaha! One of the few asians that don't turn bright red. :-) Most asian guys I know can hold alcohol very well. Most asian girls...can't...or they're faking drunk...which is lame.

I'm pretty good with alcohol...I only drink socially...I'm never drunk...

Beer is nasty...only one I like is corona...I usually end up doing shots with some friends...I've only had drinks with my white friends and they hold alcohol worse than I do...bwahaha!

Oh yeah...apparently I'm light for my age...although that isn't saying much since I live in the USA lol...

Well, when Asian's get together they do have a tendency to drink...heehee...when i was about 3 years old, for New Years we had a huge party and my parents got sooooo drunk that they sent me and my sister out to buy beer...she was 5. Yeah...let's just say that Asians do drink when they are together...especially the men.

Drinking is not and will not be a problem for me. It's funny why people drink. When they're sad... they drink... what they dont' realize is that drinking will only get them MORE depressed. I pity those who are addicted to drinking. =(

the first time i went to a bar, i had three shots. I have no idea what they were made of, but i kno the name of them. heh, they have funni, inappropriate names. but anyways, after 3 shots, i was a lil' buzz, mind u it was the first time i drank, but i'm sure if i continued to drank occasionally, i would be better with it. I did turn red after the 3 shots, and my hands and veins were realli red.
BUT i haven't drank since then, which was like 3 months ago and i don't realli intend to drink socially or for whatever reason. It was just an experience that i'm glad i had, cos i liked the feeling, but i don't want to have to tell my mom again that i drank.

i vowed to not to party in college and get drunk and stupid but i did have some champagne when me and a few of my suitemates decided to celebrate chinese new year and i am a total victim of the asian glow. half a cup and i was brighter than a tomato.

i seem to notice that with about 98% of asians that their faces turn red when they drink even the tiniest bit of alcohol.. but that doesnt happen to me thank god lol.

read through the discussion i was shocked to see that some asian families dont allow their kids to drink. my mom knows i drink and stuff but she trust me (well yeh kinda anyway haha) i think its best to drink coz wat if someone with bad intentions try to get u drunk and u have never touched alcohol before? it will be much easier for them to reach their goal of doing whatever they wanna do. not letting ur child drink even a lil bit is too harsh, what with 99% of ur friends drinking and pressure.

it all depends on u how drunk u wanna get. honestly speaking ive never been so trashed that i puked or cant remember what happened the night before (i think thats really dangerous). i know my limits and i stop if i dont feel too well (ie after the im-so-high everything-is-so-funny stage lol)

Yah, I definitely get Asian glow after like half a shot. But I think I don't get drunk till 3-4 shots of like vodka.

I don't think my parents would like it if they knew I was drinking, but I'm 2500 miles from home, how will they ever find out? :D

And I actually drink when I'm happy. Haha, like when I'm sad I just like to stay in my room, blast the music loud and read a good book. I'm such a dork, lol.

My mom wouldn't let me drink unless I was 21, which is the legal age in America. The first time I got drunk I was drinking the light stuff like daquiris with a couple shots of alcohol. According to the pictures someone took of the entire group we were pretty red XD

Last time when my resident advisor for the dorm went home for the weekend, a bunch of my friends came to me and my roommate's room (we have a few mutual friends) and we drank even tho we weren't s'pposed to XD I didn't turn as red that time even though I drank more :D
*gives herself a pat on the back*

But i don't want to get wasted tho -_- I always get mad at the people who live downstairs and get wasted enough that the ambulance has to come over. It's loud and wakes me up in the middle of the night :-x I don't want to deal with a hangover either...

People drink to drown their sorrows
to get away from their problems
to escape from reality
this is in fact stupidity
maybe some may feel pressured to drink.. they got a sense of hope in drinking.. like since so many people do it.. it must be an effective way of curbing your sadness, your depression, your unhappiness and your stress..

aldehyde dehydrogenase? thats a new name ... lol

drinking is cool... i won't be a spoil sport and say that it stupid and so on.. its time to grow up!! i understand that people can be under a lot of stress, having a lot of problems and so on.. so BOTTOMS UP!

have you ever been to a party where there is a whole lot of asians. and the asians are always the first to get drunk, and all of the sudden the say "Me soo horny, me love you long time," while humping another persons leg. ahhh funny asians

actually i just made that up, but i only drink on special ocassions and on sunday nights (football season, and superbowl). i try to cut down, drinking damages your liver and kills brain cells.

You live a sheltered life. Your view of Asians will be shattered one day. Haha. Anyway, you can't stereotype all Asians as the stay-at-home, bookworm nerd, just like you can't stereotype all Asians as the hardcore triad.

I'm not even sure how well I can handle alcohol, cuz it's all rather comparative isn't it, and I don't really count how many drinks my friends take. I don't think I have this enzyme deficiency though, cuz I feel virtually nothing after a tequila shot.

it all depends on u how drunk u wanna get. honestly speaking ive never been so trashed that i puked or cant remember what happened the night before (i think thats really dangerous). i know my limits and i stop if i dont feel too well (ie after the im-so-high everything-is-so-funny stage lol)

asians are relatively easier to get wasted.i agree.whether or not they turn red,i think it's part of the body's reaction.

when the drunk gets drunk,he would say he's not drunk yea??probably that's why they keep getting wasted and drinks madly and turns berserk or out of control.some wasters might dance too.i would say half of their brains are dead.ASLEEP on dreamland.

Hm, I don't know, I haven't been drunk, nor do I drink for that matter. Haha, people shouldn't stereotype Asians to not drinking and stuff. Anyone will tell you that they'd know a few who breaks that stereotype. Like my Korean friends o__0 lol.

I read somewhere if you turn red it's not a good sign, but you may be able to overcome it. My first roommate I ever had seemed to always turn red when we drank, but after the first month or so he stopped turning red. Hehe, we conditioned him out of his asian blush.

Anyways, ya you can't stereotype asians as people who can't drink. Like midori said, koreans will tell you otherwise. And man can koreans eat and drink. I went out one time with a bunch of korean people and we were just eating and drinking allll night. Countless shots of soju and so much fried chicken......

I think that's maybe why I can drink a pretty decent amount, since I'm half korean. That and maybe since i've been drinking for a while..........

i always wondered if it was just the asians i knew that went red like sun-ripened tomatoes, i didn't think it was a deficiency (my science is far from the best in my class)..

my sister goes bright red with LESS than a glass of beer, and another person i know passes out on one can of beer o.0 and then their mates stuck things to their face lol, and their caucasian mates saw this (getting wasted on just a can) as being a good thing.

i don't really know whether i think it's a good thing or not, and neither do i know if i have this deficiency as i have the tiniest sips of beer/wine like once in a blue moon, or even less often that that..

and knowing alcohol isn't the best thing for your body i wonder if i would want to try drinking a whole glass of beer/wine/whatever, although having said that, once i'm older i might want to..

drinking isn't is a problem because i refrain from doing it. no wine cause i don't like the taste all that much and thus don't comprehend while people drink enormous amounts of it. i like margaritas though, but with the rocks. i guess i like the salty balance.

I always thought that by the time I hit 18, I'd like alcohol.

But for some reason I'm not really into drinking. Sometimes I buy alcoholic drinks not because I want alcohol, but because they have flavours you normally can't find in non-alcoholic drinks. I like Bacardis and Midori, but I'd prefer them without the alcohol-ish taste, if you know what I mean. :?

I don't know if this has been said already. Because there is alot of pages, and I only read the first two. But it is a myth when you say it is only asians. Because if that were a fact, why is it that asians made up chinese drinking games. I think a good amount of them can hold their liquor, if not what good are the drinking games, if your passed out in a corner somewhere, or puking your brains out in a trash can?!(not many make it to the bathroom.) It is not the race tat determines whether you can drink or not. But rather, your alcohol tolerance. And your make-up(and not the kind of make-up mabeline makes):D People from alot of races have problems drinking. I'm black and I can't drink at all. I only drank a small amount of a beer. And I'm talking three to four sips. And I fell asleep at the table. It was embarassing. But it was a good thing that it was a family function,` My nephew who was 9 at the time, had to bring me into the room and everyone laughed at me when I got up an hour later from sleeping it off.

I drink 1 wine cooler on family get-togethers, or special functions. If I drink two, I'll get drunk and be in the middle of the floor dancing wildly.(It happened before) Depending on whether its a beer or two wine cooler, I'll either fall asleep, or dance. Go figure huh?!
