Bittorrent Explained
Bittorrent is a peer-to-peer file-sharing program. That means you are not downloading from a server or website, but instead off other people. In this sense it works very much like Kazaa, but much more efficiently. It is more efficient because it breaks the file into fragments so that you can download and share with multiple other computers. When the file is complete, the software combines them automatically. (Note: you never see the actually fragments at any point. It is all done within the program) You can find out more about Bittorrent at their homepage (http://www.google.com/url?sa=U&start=1&q=http://www.bittorrent.com/&e=9707).

Here is a few terms that you need to know if you want to be able to use Bittorrent

Leeches - People who download files but do not share files on their own computer with others
Seed or seeder - A computer with a complete copy of a Bittorrent file (At least one seed computer is necessary for a Bittorrent download to operate)
.torrent (torrent file) - A pointer file that directs your computer to the file you want to download
Tracker - A server that manages the Bittorrent file-transfer process

Bittorrent Clients
Ok now Bittorrent has several client programs. Imagine Bittorrent the program as a video File. Now for most windows users, the default program used for playing video files is Windows Media Player, however we all know there are many other (and many better) video playing programs out there. They do essentially the same job but have better functions or nicer skins etc. The other Bittorrent clients are in this sense the same. They are just other programs made to download Bittorrent files. (Note: the other unofficial clients are not “add-ons.” They are separate programs which can run independently of the official bt client.)

Here are a few popular clients:

These are just some of the better ones I have heard work well and recommend. Find a more complete list with descriptions and comments for each client here (http://www.slyck.com/bt.php?page=2)

I personally use and recommend Bitcomet, but you don’t have to take my word for it.

How to download
Since every client is slightly different, Its hard to write a complete walkthrough on how to download. However these are the few basic steps which are the same for ever client.

Download and Open the Torrent File
Most clients will ask you download options before it begins, such as file selection, where to download it to, etc. Fill these out in the pop up window that appears
Sit back and wait for the file to download

Here is a guide for how to use Bitcomet

First download and open a torrent file. Because some torrent sites can be a bit shady, make sure to check that you are downloading a torrent file (as underlined). Not ".torrent.virus" or something else like that
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc01.jpg

Now a screen similar to this will appear. If you want to download the file in a directory other than the default download folder, you can choose where to download the file by click "Browse" (1). It is also important to check the filesize and disk free space (2). Make sure you have enough free space or else you will not be able to download.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc02.jpg
The white box as I've written is a list of all the files included in the torrent. You can select which files you want if you don't want them all by unchecking the box to the left of the filename.

Now your Bitcomet client will be open.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc03.jpg
Most everything is pretty self explainitory. You can see the filename, filesize, % done, Download speed, Upload speed, Estimated time left to complete download, Seed/Peer, etc.

What do all those different colored icons mean?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc_downloading.jpg Downloading the file/files
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc_seeding.jpg Seeding the file/files
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc_connecting2.jpg Connecting to the tracker
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc_connecting.jpg Connected to the tracker but there are no peers or seeds
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc_error.jpg Error, there is not enough diskspace for this file to continue downloading (it may say 100% completed)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc_hashcheck.jpg File is completed and is Hash checking (making sure the file was not corrupted)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/jiandanai/btbc_stopped.jpg Torrent is stopped (not seeding or downloading and not trying to connect to the tracker)

You can also check the number of seeds and peers where I have circled on the status window.

Now sit back and wait for the file to download. Remember you can only get the file if there are seeders. So if there are none, just hope they sing on later.

If you are still having trouble, be sure to check the individual homepages of your client if you are having problems downloading.

FAQ
Ok I am actually not going to write a FAQ for now because there is already a well written one located here (http://www.bittorrent.com/FAQ.html) on the Bittorrent homepage. If you have a question that is not addressed there however, go ahead and ask it here and hopefully I will know the answer. Please before you ask a question, check the homepage of your client. Chances are that 99.9% of the time it is already answered there or in the official Bittorrent FAQ.

There's a few more sites like
www.demonoid.com
www.torrentspy.com
www.isohunt.com
www.torrentreactor.net/
www.torrent-finder.com/
www.scrapetorrent.com/index.php
http://www.torrentz.com/
http://btjunkie.org/

There's tons of sites, but only a few have good torrents, seeders/leechers ratio. Another program is µTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/), which is small and less of a resource-hog.

Bittorrent sets upload/download speed on a ratio, so the more you give, the more you get.

What's the difference between a private and a public tracker? I tried to download a file today, but it told me that I had to go to Bitt.tv and make an account because it was private. What's this all about?

A torrent with a public tracker simply means that anyone can use it and download it.

The private one means you must be registered with the tracker to use it and therefore download it, sorta like you have to be a member to post on this forum.
