View Full Version : Johnny Depp
After typing out four long starting posts for this thread and losing them each time, in different ways, and becoming very pissed off and annoyed.. I finally decided to try once again because this amazing actor cannot go unnoticed. Johnny Depp, who just turned 40 recently (June 9th), is an extremely talented actor that likes to go against the mainstream and instead cherrypicks the roles that appeal to him, most often eccentric, "weird" characters. Well-known as Edward Scissorhands or from Blow, he also just starred in a movie that came out a month ago as Captain Jack Sparrow, in the movie Pirates of the Carribean.
Below are at-a-glance biography facts, taken from here (http://www.johnnydeppfan.com).
Name: John Christopher Depp II
Birth date: 6/9/63

Weight: 155
Birth place: Owensboro, Kentucky

Occupations: Gas attendant, pen salesman, musician, actor
Distinguishing Features: High cheekbones, pouty lips

Relatives: Mother - Betty Sue Palmer,
Father - John Depp,
brother - Danny,
Sisters - Christie and Debbie
Marital Status: Divorced (Winona Ryder), engaged, engaged, engaged...steady with Vanessa
As he's been in over 25 movies, I'll just name a few...:
Edward Scissorhands
Benny & Joon
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Ed Wood
Don Juan DeMarco
Fear and Loathing
The Ninth Gate
Sleepy Hollow <--*flinch*
The Man Who Cried
Chocolat
Blow
and Pirates of the Caribbean.
There are three projects he's working on that are set to come out later this year, and another next year (2004). These are Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Neverland, and Secret Window, Secret Garden.
Pirates of the Caribbean is also set for a sequel, where he will be starring again as Captain Jack Sparrow. (:excited:)
He currently has two children, a four-year-old daughter named Lily-Rose, and a one-year-old son, named, coincidently, Jack. Both he had with his steady girlfriend Vanessa, who he chooses not to marry until his children are old enough to give their opinion about whether they want him to (I read that in an article somewhere, a little weird but...)
---------------------------------------------
OKAY, that took a really long time to type!!!!!!!!! But now that I'm done with all the basic introductions for Johnny Depp, I'll go to my obsessed state.
Johnny Depp is an AMAZING actor. If you haven't seen any of his movies, then go out right now and watch Pirates of the Caribbean, where he once again steps into the role of a weird, off-beat character but is hilarious while doing it.
I have the GQ magazine on him, with four pages about his personal life and what he's doing now (my other two are about POTC .__.) so if you want me to scan/type out what's there I'll gladly do so (even though I doubt it.)
Oh yeah, Depp is also a very talented guitar player. If you want to hear him playing the slide guitar (which is hard to do), he plays it in one of Oasis' songs (Oasis is a British band that he's friends with, I love their music), called Fade In-Out.
Johnny Depp!!!!!!!!!!!

woo-hoo.. a johnny topic. you have to excuse me, i haven't had access to the internet in awhile.
i recommend Sleepy Hollow, i really liked that movie. i still can't believe he's 40!
does anyone know if he still has those gold caps on his teeth from POTC? i wonder how long he plans to keep them on......
Jess: do you know why he moved to france? sorry... i'm really bad at following the details of celebraties.

i remember reading in an article that he didn't like the life in america and wanted his daughter to grow up in another environment. that's why he moved to france?

Johnny Depp is very eccentric, isn't he? :glug:
He seems funny and quirky. Sad to say, I don't know much about him outside of POTC, Sleepy Hollow and Chocolat... I didn't even realize he was the actor in those movies until someone told me. *bonk*
He's great. (I keep my comments short because I will go into crazy fangirl mode soon. XD)

He moved to France because he didn't want to be suffocated in Hollywood with all the Glamour and Glitz. One of the things he looks for in life is simplicity, and he says that living in the South of France has been a dream come true.
Anyhow, I love his dark and rugged look. The first picture of him playing the piano is so sexy, I love it. Dark any mysterious... >=P I like that!

i heard POTC was a pretty cool movie? i should go see it huh?
YES YOU SHOULD GO AND SEE IT.
Chun Li> That's one of the reasons why I love him, too. He's so.... just not like everyone else out there.

I realllly want to see POTC. At first it was just because Orli's a pretty boy. But then after hearing all these good things about Johnny Depp, I want to see him in action. And my best friend started obsessing over him so it'll be fun to obsess with her.
I saw Edward Scissorhands at school once. I thought he was sorta cute and acted pretty good, but I didn't pay much attention to him because I didn't know anything about Depp back then. And I didn't like the movie that much.. Not because it was bad, but it was sorta disturbing for me.
After I watch PotC sometime this week, I think I'll go check out his other movies. But I can't touch anything scary >.< I hope I won't be scared by PotC. I don't think I've ever watched an entire commercial for PotC. The skeletons scare me. My friend assured me that Sleepy Hollow was more funny (his expressions?) than scary. But I don't trust her. I want to see the movie, but I don't want to become more paranoid than I am right now.
They should put more hot guys (Jay and Depp) on girl magazines instead of men magazines.
ARAAGH. for a caucasian: Hot!
And i dig dark eyeshadow baby.
he was in chocolat??

here's a pretty detailed website on mr. depp
http://www.johnnydeppfan.com/
there's actually a better one that i came across before but i don't remember what it is at the moment.
here's a fun quiz to do in your spare time. it's to see which johnny depp character you're most like.
http://www.members.aol.com/radioheadchick/quizzes/depp.htm
i'm Ichabod Crane From "Sleepy Hollow." (Go figure, i really like this movie)
it says that i'm a deep thinker, most times logically (true). I'm a neat freak (true) and that i'm wuss (so not true!!!) but i have the ability to overcome my fears and come out stonger in the end. (so true) :)
You Are Edward From "Edward Scissorhands."
You are very shy and often misunderstood. Innocent, sweet, and artistic, you like to pass your days by daydreaming and expressing yourself through the arts. You are a truly unique individual. Unfortunately, you are quite lonely, and few people truly understand you.
-----------------
A good Depp site would be www.johnnydeppzone.com. What it lacks in information about him (I can't find a biography page dammit) it makes up in pictures, interesting things about him, quotes, and every single update concerning him. So if you want any latest news on him at all, that would be the first place to go.
I heard Blow was pretty good from one of my friends, has anyone seen it? Would you recommend it?

EDIT: Sexy picture of Johnny Depp.

HAHAHHA!!!
You are Don Juan From "Don Juan De Marco."
Woobaby! You are Don Juan - dark and handsome, and the world's greatest lover. Some people find you to be a bit insane (or is that insanely sexy?). While you may not be playing with all 52 cards, don't let that get you down - you're a true romantic at heart.
OMG CHUN LI!!! *goes on a sexual rampage after you* YOUR EYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(But Jay is better :D)
Did you know that Johnny Depp was in the LA Times today????? If you get the LA Times, it's at E8. A nice long article about him and his acting and everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Geez...Johnny Depp's awesome! I knew him from 'Edward scissorshand" which was so good and left me in tears..but after that I did not see any of the movies he was in till Pirates, and he blew me away!
I agree with 28dayz that though Orlando Bloom was cute, he wasn't as much impact on the movie than Depp. I love how Depp 'sways' when he talks being Cap'n Sparrow. I'm gonna get the dvd when it comes out!
Definitely! I'm going to get the DVD when it comes out. Because it has all these behind the scenes stuff and I can't miss out on that :bleh: Also that fact that the movie itself is on the DVD.
Wasn't Edward Scissorhands good???????? Didn't it make you want to cry when he was holding Winona Ryder???

just really weird >_<
I will be buying the potc dvd though. And I will probably buy Xmen2.

I know the ending to Edward Scissorhands was kinda sad. About how he never got his hands and how Winona Ryder (I forget her name in the movie ><) never went back up there to see him.
I have the Blow DVD right next to me. I'm going to go watch it in 2 seconds.

Don't mean to bash the movie :P Just didn't find much interest in it.

He has a movie coming out, Once Upon a Time in Mexico (third movie after Desperado, but you don't need to have seen Desperado to understand it) that comes out on September 12th. I heard he also wrote a song for his character, so be sure to check that out...

Me too. Especially when he stuck his forks in the buns and made them dance.
That was so funny. I laughed so pathetically at that part. How about the part where he keeps doing that imitation of that weird random movie that looks really really lame and bad??? Or the part where he slides on the floor and says, "Mommy!" and the guys take him away.
I bought the DVD and saw it again today with my sister, she said she didn't like it just because I liked Johnny Depp so much. How stupid is that?

anywayz, this is a funny quote of Johnny's in which i burst out laughing after reading it:
when asked if it was important in a relationship to be able to fart in front of each other.
I'm not sure it's the kind of thing that boys and girls should be doing together. Some things should be private, you know.

Johnny Depp lives in France probably due to his 'wife or girlfriend' Vanessa Paradis who is a French singer and actress. Ever heard of the song ' Joe le Taxi', well she is the one that sings it. I actually own two of her cd's. In her last release, 'Bliss', Johnny help contribute cowriting two the songs in there.
He caught my eye when he starred in 'outcast' roles like 'Edward ' 'What's eating Gilbert Grape (actually read the book first which I liked) and 'Benny and Joon'. He still continues to play the eccentric which makes every role unpredicatable. However haven't seen his latest string of roles.
yummieboba
03-20-2004, 03:57 AM
Yea, Paradis is his girlfriend. I read somewhere that he doesn't want to actually get married because of his past history with short/bad marriages and everything. the article also said the he was willing to get married anytime his girlfriend or kids wanted to.
I didn't know that Johnny Depp helped to write some of the songs! that's really cool!
Besides doing a second Pirates of the Caribbean, he's going to be in a remake of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" hahaha i can't wait! Personally, that movie freaked me out with the short lil blue dudes or something like that, but for Johnny Depp? I'll watch it!
And I also heard that he always wanted to play the "outcast" kind of roles because early in his career, he played the "heartthrob" role, and a whole bunch of girls like him and everything, and he didn't like it, so from then on he wanted to play roles where he wouldn't be swarmed by girls as a result hahaha. Has anyone seen Chocolat? I thought it was a pretty good movie with him in it. :)
roche
03-20-2004, 10:12 PM
yup, he's been in a whole bunch of off-beat, non mainstream roles....
that adds to his charm!!!!!
i read someplace that he accepted the role in pirates even tho its more commerical/mainstream than his usual movies coz it was his childhood fantasy to be a pirate....haha
and i htink he'll make a pretty good willy wonka!!!!!! for some reason i'm picturing capt jack sparrow in the willy wonka role....
but wonka is a pretty eccentric character....
just like jack sparrow!

i only think johnny depp is hot in pirate of the carribean... otherwise... he's ugly... im sorry ppl but he's not cute...only with long hair and the eye shadow... and when i was small.. he terrified me in edwards scissorhands
you know...you are surrounded by Johnny fans here...
s'ok. everybody is entitled to their own opinion. as long as i find Johnny attractive, that's what counts for me...
...and he was a huge star with girls back in his 21 Jump Street days...

I guess that's one things celebrities luck out on... that they can really play whatever role they want. Hell, I wanted to be a pirate too but I'll never get to try it!

for ppl who are interested, the latest news is that Johnny has accepted the role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the 2nd instalment of POTC:Treasures of the Lost Abyss. production is set to begin in January of 2005. producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed a 3rd instalment as well and hopes to film it back-to-back along with the 2nd, but it is unsure whether Johnny will be back for that one. :)
great news for POTC and Johnny fans! :yeah:
and btw, for those who don't think much of Johnny's looks, take a look here. a few of my fave pics: (click refresh if can't see)

wah, thanks teresa!!! yea, i heard about him doing a 2nd POTC, i'm so excited! I didn't know that they were doing a 3rd one, though. I hope it doesn't turn into one of those movies with 500 sequels just because the first one did well. :glug:
thanks for the pics too!! :flowers: I think why I like him so much is because his eyes are so mysterious! I love that last pic!!

They're planning have three parts to the movie like LOTR. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Kiera Knightly are all going back to do the second movie but they haven't said anything about the third. Anyway, Johnny Depp is my favorite actor! His skills in Pirates of the Caribbean were amazing! He made the movie really exciting to watch! I think his role was the reason why the movie is so popular. (I guess Orlando Bloom too) I was really disappointed that he didn't win that Oscar for best actor though. I saw Secret Window too! Johnny Depp is really good at playing eccentric roles!

YES!!! :excited: his eyes are absolutely beautiful! he is so good at acting with them, which is why Edward Scissorhands was so good, because he had to portray a lot just with his eyes. i hope his children have got his eyes.
Johnny Depp is really good at playing eccentric roles!
oh definitely!! most of the characters he's played are weird, out of the ordinary, eccentric and even social outcasts. that's what interests him because he feels he can somewhat relate to the characters he plays.

johnny depp has scared me ever since i saw "edward scissorhands". i don't think i've ever seen him in anything else (wait, wasn't he in "beetlejuice" too? i think i saw the beginning of that) and so i haven't quite gotten over how freaky he was back then. talk about a scary character! yah, i don't think he's so hot. he seems to like roles in which he wears a lot of makeup.
ker_ai_teresa
04-21-2004, 07:12 AM
no he wasn't in beetlejuice.
the thing i like about Johnny is his attitude and passion towards acting. he sees it as a job, not as a means to fame, popularity and fortune.
about Edward Scissorhands, Tom Cruise was actually offered the role as Edward, but he didn't want the character to have scars all over its face (you know, wreck his pretty-boy image) so Johnny took it instead. and you're right, Johnny liked to have his face done up the way it was in Scissorhands. he wasn't too worried about having his face "scarred" for a movie.

i dont find johnny depp attractive.. only as a pirate... it's iono... i think he's rather on the ugly side...
Johnny Depp's a great actor. He's dark, brooding and pretty hot looking - in my books, at least. Did anyone see Edward Scissorshands ? He was awesome in it. I respect actors that take on unconventional roles :)

HP 3 is the Harry Potter 3: The Prisoner of Azkaban. Gary Oldman is the actor who played Sirius in the movie.

oh my lord
i'm in love with johnny depp all over again.....
he just bowls me over each time i see him in a movie...!!!!
i just watched "Finding Neverland"
i was supposed to watch oceans 12 instead, but it didn't work out, so i got "dragged" by my friend to watch "Finding Neverland" - i only went when he said Johnny Depp
and i loved the movie!!!! it was simply told, yet really touching...!!!!

Johnny Depp was just soooooo charming in there.
i don't understand how he can carry off being the rogue capt jack sparrow, and yet the charming james barrie as well.....

i don't understand how he can carry off being the rogue capt jack sparrow, and yet the charming james barrie as well.....
roche, you don't understand??? :glug:
let me tell you about Johnny Depp.....he's a phenomenon of an actor, that's why he's able to carry off those characters so convincingly. :D that'll also explain why he can also go from a wacky scientist in Sleepy Hollow, to the cool but troubled detective in From Hell. or from the insecure outcast in Edward Scissorhands, to a reluctant but loving head of the family in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Johnny Depp is just too good.
unfortunately for me, i have to wait till Januray to see the film here.
i find it interesting how in Finding Neverland, he has to dress up as a pirate in a scene.... :D
roche
12-11-2004, 08:29 PM
haha, that was a rhetorical "i don't understand"
as in, its not something that most regular actors can achieve.....so i'm absolutely agreeing that johnny depp is a phenomenal actor.....!!!!!
i saw the trailer/preview for charlie and the chocolate factory...i think he'd make a really good willy wonka, though his makeup/costume does make him look a little wierd there....
but in finding neverland, he's in a suit or tux for most of the time
droolfest!
oh and yeap, he dresses up as a pirate while playing with the kids.... :-)
there was this scene where he dressed up as a red indian, and that was absolutely hilarious....!
when we were in line to buy the tickets, i overheard two conversations that went exactly the same way....
"so what's this movie about" says guy
"who cares? johnny depp's in it...." says girl

yes!!! he'd make such a good Willy Wonka!!! it's just the type of character that he likes to play.....the weird, eccentric, wacky......
and well, he looked pretty weird when i first saw him as Jack Sparrow, so i'm prepared for WW..... and anywayz, i like the colour purple.

You guys do think he's a good willy wonka? Hmm i'd say nah. He might have the acting ability to, but he is too young for the role. I imagine a near 50 year old man... Depp is too... suave looking. :-)
Suddenly in to Edward Scissorhands all over again...

he is 41 this year....though he doesn't LOOK it
here's a teaser for the charlie and chocolate factory movie....
http://movies.yahoo.com/movies/feature/charlieandthechocolatefactory.html
i'd say that makeup does a lot....
he looks pretty wierd in there....
so i'd say, if i do like him as willy wonka, i'd like him for his portrayal of the character and not his looks there....!

Argh, that pic there is creepy! God totally, agreeing with you roche, imagine waking up to that! I can't believe i'm actually saying this for depp, but :glug:
41 year old eh...

12-13-2004, 09:57 AM
hehe, i like the weirdness. see, Johnny's not afraid of looking weird to have the chance to play a good role.
i guess if you think he looks a lil' freaky here you should think back to some of the stuff that Jim Carey has done...actually, he would've made a very good WW too!
but gah! gotta wait even longer b4 TCF is released here in aust.

teresa that's a darn good advertising banner....
conned me alright!
yup, i think its great that johnny depp doesn't mind playing roles in which he's in a strange get up
somehow he still manages to pull it off, and come off looking at droolsome as over
*thinks POTC*
honestly, i can't imagine anyone else being able to carry off capt jack sparrow
(with all that black eyeliner) and still look darn good!!!
next to orlando bloom to boot!!!!
honestly, i had no eyes for orlando bloom at all.....even tho i loved legolas....
though....i gotta say that its prob pretty hard for him to look good as willy wonka....
no worries though
his charm will still bowl me over!
but long time more before that's released.....
ftlouiea
12-13-2004, 08:27 PM
Oooh yeah, Jim Carrey would have been an interesting selcetion to play WW too!

Jay's birthday is coming up in a few days..... :yeah:
haha, speaking of POTC, i'd initially wanted to watch it for orlando but by the end of the film i was screaming Long Lives Johnny!! :D
and yeah, who can get away with wearing eyeliner the way he did.
as for WW....hehe, the bob cut is kinda  . and i'm disappointed that his coat isn't purple!
Dana--> isn't TCF due for release in July? :? i thought i saw July somewhere....maybe on the yahoo trailer page.

well.....i guess i was referring to your avatar then? coz it says 18 Dec 1979....which isn't jay's birthday....
plus your line of "think i've got it wrong...go here and see for yourself" seems to imply that there's some kind of reasoning behind saying that jay's bday is 18 Dec?
perhaps i'm just completely confused. schoolwork does this to me....

whoops! off topic!
back to Johnny....
i love Johnny....
ok, that was lame.
Is anyone else going ballistic in anticipation of Depp’s ‘The Libertine’? I’ve been so looking forward to this movie for ages & for whatever political reason or another the release date keeps getting delayed, although they have finally released the trailer & teaser trailer. You can view the trailers & read the synopsis here:
http://www.cinemablend.com/new.php?id=1897
Just in case you haven’t seen them. I’ve viewed it a dozen times *sad but true*, Depp looks mesmerizing as ever in it & the language of the film sounds truly poetic.

I thought The Libertine was only supposed to be released in some European country...I've forgotten which one. The Czech Republic I think it was.
Anyway, if it is due for release in other parts of the world, that's great news. ^^
Really, I never heard that? I think it was supposed to be released in the UK September 2005 but ran into disputes with censorship hence the delay. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if it completely surpasses the cinema & goes directly to DVD.
Gosh, what a difference it makes starring in a so-called “controversial” flick in comparison to starring in a “big money maker” like ‘Pirates of the Caribbean II’ which has it’s cinema release dates & what not confirmed even before they begin shooting it.
Any-way thanks.

I dont get this guy. i mean my girl friend and all of her friends were obsessed with this dude. but it started all with the pirates of the carribean, good movie but gets annoying after everwhere i look has that theme. i'm thinkin it has to do something with his little "soulpatch" (haha funny word i got from jackie chan), maybe i'll grow one too.
Ok chineseguyjl, let me simplify what exactly there is to ‘get about this guy’, other than the ever appalling ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ ahem *clears throat* he is; BEAUTIFUL!!!
Oh yeah & he can act & he absolutely oozes sexuality without bordering into femininity or overt narcissism for that matter, hmm *ponders*, __________________sorry was still thinking then; was that simple enough justification for you sweetie? *continues pondering*…

Wow thanks for all the info about Johnny, Jess. I totally admire him and I love his movies. Its true that he goes for all these different and eccentric roles but I think it just showcases his talent and individuality. Plus he looks so darn good =p
Did you guys ever see him in Nightmare on Elm Street? He was really young when he acted in that role and so cute. His character dies eventually but you still get some eye candy lol. The movie isn't for the faint hearted though, it's pretty gory.

Depp is one of my favorite actors...there are a lot of conflicts that people don't think he is good but WUTEVER! I love the way he acts, he is totally natural and I actually just watch Charlie and the chocolate factory and he is amazing in there! It was said that he got his voice of WONKA from playing barbie with his daughter! hehe cute I can't believe some people doesn't like this wonderful man that brings talent and laughs on the screen. There are more horrible actors that gets praised too much and Depp definitely really need to win an oscar..I'm starting to get piss!!!

oh haha.. i caught it. Yap it was rather ** but Johnny Depp's acting left me in awe. He was supposed to be such a detestful character, but I think a lot of pple left the cinema liking his character.. yap it's a good show cos of his acting, n nothing else haha.. in fact it was widely criticised. I read from the internet that Depp's movies were always criticised.. but I think he deserves our respect cos he always chooses such unconventional roles! My friend recommended me to his earlier movies, Benny & Joon & What's eating Gilbert Grape & i liked both of them a lot!

Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow must be the most iconic character for movies in this decade, and especially for Disney's for it even to be included in the Kingdom Hearts game. I think no character has gone from zero to hero as fast as Jack Sparrow did and even though some movie characters like Batman or Superman are deemed more famous, bear in mind that those characters have been around for long, yet Jack Sparrow rose to its famous state only with the first movie.
That shows how great Johnny Depp is as Jack Sparrow, it is his career's turning point.
