Ok, I just had this sudden inspiration. I see tons of karaoke songs being posted in the Karaoke Lounge, and I thought, hey, why not select the best songs and put it into a CD instead of leaving all the wonderful works there to collect dust.

Then another idea popped into my head. Maybe, we could do it for a profit? So, we could get people interested to send in what they think are their best songs, compile it and burn it onto a CD, and then put it up for sale to the "public", meaning all other members of JCNET of course, and all proceeds going to the maintenance of JCNET. Of course, we would include excerpts from all the tracks as people may want to know how the songs sound to assess whether its bang for their buck. Of course, we aren't professionals, so we definitely may not sell it at the market price of regular CDs. Perhaps, just covering the cost of maybe shipping and the blank CD itself, and a little bit more (TBD by polls).

However, upon discussing with Petricia, we realized that there are certain seemingly insurmountable issues that we may face.

Copyright laws

Technically, we are already violating it by resinging other singers' songs and posting them in the karaoke lounge. However, that is still not so serious as we are doing it "for fun" and not making any money out of the works of other people. If we did a compilation and sold it, there may be some problems since it is now profitable.

We thought of a solution, that is, to ask some talented people who have the resources to actually compose songs and do the music. However, there may be copyright issues again since these composers do not have any way to protect their own works and they do face a risk of plagiarism by others.

For now, we cannot think of any better ways to get around the issues that we face, but this is a really exciting concept to me, and I'm hoping in some ways, we may be able to pull off something and carry this through.

Multiple brains are better than one or two, so I'm posting this to gather feedback and comments about how all of you think we should go about doing it! Please do take some time to think about it and contribute your ideas! Thanks~~~!!

Hmm, but those Karaoke songs are already in this forum, aren't they? I don't think people would want to buy an whole album of those songs (cause although they're Jay's songs, they're not Jay), cause buying them would involve:

spending money (and the songs are available for download)
buying something online (this is a common issue)

I like the idea of doing something to get money for JCNET though.

well, my idea would probably be different songs, and a whole new redo-ing of it, i.e., make it sound more perfect, or of better quality. as you can tell, some of us do the karaokes for fun, and its not really refined, like you hear alot of static, or the singer's voice in the background. the whole notion is to raise funds, and therefore, we don't have to make it extremely expensive since i don't foresee the "cost of production" to be very high. of course you don't have to take my ideas as sealed in concrete, we could always expand on it.

Sounds like fun.

I'd be willing to help edit, mix, and provide instrumentals if you wanna do karaoke. As for composing our own songs, erm... errr... probably not.

I'm not sure about the copyright stuff... but meh...

I'd love to have a CD of my favorite JCNET songs, especially fungi's. :bleh:

It'd be super-hard though.
Other than the copyright issues, most of us don't have a super-cool recording studio in our room = (

Most of us.

Will put away the evil glare, b/c if you guys are interested, I could consult my friend who records music online all the time with her friends. I could get her advice on how to set up, mix, and include multiple voices at once, even though they come from different computers. It sounds like a great idea, but for a great result it would take many hours, so we would have to make sure people are dedicated. I'm interested in singing, but am too embarrassed to put my voice up for others to listen to, but w/ group effort...yah count me in.
