View Full Version : [Suggestion] A Radio at JC.NET

Just thought it would be fun to have a radio station where people can tune in for some music while browsing the forum or just simply listening in at their own leisure time. Kinda like the radio station they have at Soompi, except they play a majority of korean songs. We could have live DJs who could take requests (in the IRC chat room) based on their playlist. They can also introduce new artists, play some newly released songs to get people interested in buying the artists CD's... I can provide a tuturial on how to set up a radio station if you guys are really interested. So what do you guys think?

well... i definitely dun mind... but how would it affect the whole server? being an idiot at these kinda of things, i am not so sure... if it is not going to, i am all for it.. haha

Errr...Sounds great, but can you imagine the time it would take to set it up? o_O

Who knows? Maybe Karen or Pencil or CashewLisa-jie will like the idea and take the time to set it up. (But I think Karen's going nuts with the chatroom already. XD)

i think it's a cool idea.. But who would be willing to be the DJs, and get all the music and stuff? I would definitely listen to it though. :D

I'm glad a few of you are interested! klarence, we can hold auditions for the people who want to DJ, I'm sure some people would be interested. Also, the music comes from the DJ's own music folder. :)

It might be a little complicated at the beginning to set it all up but once its finished it'll be really enjoyable.

Basically, you can set up a FREE Internet Radio Station by using SHOUTcast (http://www.shoutcast.com/)

What is SHOUTcast?

"SHOUTcast lets you broadcast what you are listening to in Winamp across the Internet or a LAN (Home, office, campus, etc.) With SHOUTcast you can run your own online radio station for free or listen to other stations ran by others across the net."

What you need:

- Winamp
- DSP plug-in
- Server

STEPS FOR RUNNING YOUR OWN STATION
credits: Chojnacki @ lineman.net

If you are going to run your own station, you will need port 8000-8005 open (you can do this in your router console or you can contact your network admin)

Step One:
Install Winamp 2.05 or higher and restart your computer.

Step Two:
Download and install the SHOUTcast DSP plug-in (http://www.shoutcast.com/downloads/shoutcast-dsp-1-8-2b-windows.exe)

Step Three:
Download and install the SHOUTcast SERVER, then make a shortcut to your desktop if needed to the .exe file

Step Four:
Run the Server and click edit config.

Step Five:
Read the config file because it is self explanatory and make your changes as needed, then. Save it.

Step Six:
Open winamp and get to preferences (CTRL+P), Go into plug-ins, highlight SHOUTcast DSP plugin, then press CONFIGURE ACTIVE PLUGIN

Step Seven:
Click the output tab, click output one and click connection (if you are the only computer running SHOUTcast on a network, then make 127.0.0.1 as your address)
If you want the plug-in to run your server work every time you open winamp then click CONNECT AT STARTUP (if you do not do this, you will have to connect each time you want to run it)

Step Eight:
Where it says password, enter the password you made in the config file

Step Nine:
Restart your computer, open winamp, run the server and connect the plug-in If you are not having it automatically

Step Ten:
Go to http://yourip:8000 (replace yourip with your actual IP address)

Step Eleven:
You are done setting up your Internet radio station, enjoy :o)

Royaljay,

As much as this sounds a good idea :excited: I think it'd be better if you contacted one of the admins or mods and proposed your idea to them. Good luck!

Wow, I think this is a really good idea! I don't no much about the technical stuff, but if it's possible, I think many members have interest in a JC-net radiostation (plus it's so cool, having ur own radiostation :) ). I especially like the idea that ppl can introduce new artists, request for a special song and all that. You could have some 'programs' like charts, or artist of the week, or something like that :)

But hey, it's up to the admins and mods. I say: I'm interested! (as long as it won't be bad for the forum)

i used shoutCAST before and the results are great! i used to host it at home and listen my home mp3 from office :bleh: the streaming is quite ok. but if this is implemented in JCNet i think we need a huge bandwidth for it :bleh:

katie23: charts!! yea i wish that we could have charts. That would be so cool. So many people visit this site, so we could have a weekly poll for certain songs/artists. after all, everyone likes different singers. lol that would be fun.

i think that's a good idea, i dont know if i would be able to hear the songs, cos my internet really sucks, but i mean since this is a jay forum, and jay is a singer, it would be cool if we could listen to his music, and other artists' music as well

It sounds like a good idea, just the whole thing takes a lot of work. I don't think all the mods and admins have a lot of time to set up a JC.net radio. I might be wrong. But you're free to make your own radio station and like dedicate it to JC.net... i think thats okay =P i can't really think right now. If its really sucessful and if it doesn't fall apart, the Radio idea is a possibility.

I kinda always wanted to be an online radio dj XD just not enough time =P

I can help get this set up. I go to www.bigbradio.com a lot to listen to their music, but I'd also come here to listen if we could get something like this going. Shoutcast is probably one of the BEST ways to accomplish this as both iTunes and Winamp play it.

That'll be awesome, JC songs all day long...lol. AFradio and AsianFanatics have their radio too, so it wouldn't be a bad idea for JC.net to set up one too ^^"

wow, tht's an awosome idea, and i would really love to paticipate in tt, i really want to be a DJ, but i was wondering, do u need ADSL to be a DJ?

Well, i think this is kind of a good idea but will the playing of songs online openly be allowed. as in will it be a legal action? and will it affect the server badly since we got to set up a online radio? who will be the DJ and how will it operate and stuff like that.

wackycashew
04-22-2005, 02:31 PM
i've been rather silent about this cuz i've been trying to read over the instructions and stuff on the shoutcast site. personally, i think it's a great idea. but getting it to work will require some of your help.

setting it up doesn't seem too bad as i went through the steps yesterday, plus simms has kindly offered to help. as for legal issues, if it's english music, that's probably what will be affected more. but reading from the shoutcast site, i think we can adhere to the rules. basically stuff like not playing full albums of an artist in a row or no more than X number of songs by the same artist within a time frame (i.e. 3 hours). in any case, those issues i think we can deal with.

as for DJs, we can hold auditions or see who'd want to volunteer. we can teach people how to use any equipment involved if need be (WinAmp, the plug-in, a microphone, whatever...). the good thing is that shoutcast seems compatible with Windows/Mac/Linux users. there are recommended programs to use for each kind of user. so, you don't necessarily need to be restricted by WinAmp.

my main concern right now is the server side of things. i don't think we'd wanna take up any more of our current server space for j-c.net, so if there's another server, it'd probably be better.

Having a JC.NET radio sounds like a really fun idea!!!! Its so creative and the majority of the people who hang out here are all fans of music! I think at one radio at another forum (asiasfinest, i think) they have different times for different segments. so yeh if this idea ever gets through maybe you guys could consider it ^^;;

As wackycashew said the main concern would probably be the server so do you guys know how much space would be necessary to uphold this plan? If its not too much maybe a freeserver could sustain this idea?

i have applied to DJ using shoutcast at soompi and would love to DJ and help set up one for JC net too.

i have a spare weekend this weekend and will see if i can get something running off my server

people do need broadband to broadcast, but you can change the broascast rate so that dialup users can use it.

i will see if my server allows me to broadcast and wha kind of bandwith it will take..

a very good idea!!
great suggestion...in this way....we can delicate songs to jay and friends....haha...good...
but....how are we got to get to the radio? Using Windows Media?

Its all about the DJ's really. If the supply of active of DJ's are available, complimented with a nice subforum where we can discuss what we hear, it could get really interesting. Distributing the DJ's across different time zones would ensure something will be playing most of the time. I think its a great idea, and how it'll be implimented soon.

I believe that for those time slot where no DJs are avaliable, the software can be programmed to play music by itself? So if short of manpower, the radio can still function.

It is indeed a good idea.

it really is a great idea but there are also downs
if it really is going ahead then i would be very glad.
*the DJ's will be speaking english right?

I hope everything goes well for you *royaljay*
really is a great idea but hope you can manage it coz it's ALOT of work!

I can do it (sort of). I am already running a Mandarin station on Live365.

I just got the green light from Live365 to put Mandarin Radio along with a resurrected form of my previous station, Pop Goes Asia on their premium distribution network including iTunes, Windows Media, Tivo & Motorola iRadio.

This is great for my mission of putting Asian music out there where people can hear it!

So far, I have just been putting up a 180 song playlist each week (20 listener favorites from the week before, 10 new tracks and 150 from the library).

I am going to have to add some DJs to the station. Mostly just station Ids and a few back-announces. We can even plug JC-Net! (commercials are not allowed).

I will be looking for some volunteer DJs. If you are interested, and have a decent voice and are bilingual Engilish and (Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, or Korean) please PM me. If you're under 18 I'd need a waiver from your parents.

I don't want to get into the whole live DJ thing because it is too prone to technical issues and usually sounds really amateurish.

I want people to hear and enjoy the music, the DJ voices should be used sparingly to help people remember the station and drive them to the website. Perhaps a Mandarin "word of the day" would add some additional value. We'd record in batches and then I'd plug them in each week.

Can't be more than 4 Jay songs in a 3-hour period. We must obey US copyright laws -- including $2000/year royalty payments (I hope Jay gets his share).

Anyway, I you don't want to DJ perhaps (with permission from the Mods) we can set-up a request thread here on JC-NET.

I'll ask when I know the exact details. But I'm pretty sure Jan 1 is the launch date.

is this radio idea actuallly be turned into reality? because the this thread started on 04-09-2005 and it's 14-12-20005 now, been over 3 month...is JCNET radio actually under construction or just an idea floating around.

that's not possible, because i think there's a rule about you can't play 1 person's song more than 3 times in the period of 3 hours or something, or else it will go against the copyright law.

hmm..i've been researching long and hard about this...my brain cells have been totally fried.

-do we really need a server?! can't we just be a broadcaster using shoutcast's server and be a dj?

-if we really need a server..i'm willing to run the server(but hmm..i don't know if it will work though)..and i'm willing to be a dj..
some conditions may apply though..
i can't have my comp on all the time..so timed slots will be used for when i'll have my comp on and dj can use it to broadcast music.

and some extras
i was thinking about interviewing other members here in JCNET..
if we have member spotlight up and running again..maybe we can interview the person being spotlighted.

and dj requirements
+1000 songs of korean, japanese, mandarin, and cantonese..english maybe..
we can hold auditions for djs..
must be energetic.
i think for auditions..we can have people be a dj for a night and see how they do..like interaction with the audience..saying stuff like how are yall doing (lol i know that no one will say anything back ahah) and naming out the songs.

anyway thats my thoughts so far..please give suggestions

catseyes

I like the time slot idea actually, then we can just broadcast with shoutcast server. All we need is to have a notice/timetable for the members to know when a DJ is on.

And a DJ don't have to talk that much i guess, or rather, they can choose to talk or not, lol. All they have to make sure is there must be songs for us to listen~

Shu1Yah
03-04-2007, 05:06 PM
lol Cats ge, then whats the point of having a DJ when they don't talk? ha jks la~ but i do think it'd be better for the DJ to talk more ne, so they can interact better with the audience. But i guess it would be kind of weird that you're speaking into this mic ... maybe asking questions although you cant hear what's their response .... aha. im being a paranoid right now :D ahem.

Hai. good music is a definite. Is it possible to request songs when the DJing is going on? Maybe we can make a "JCNET Radio" room in chat and that is where the audience can request ne.

And maybe, we can hold contests during games and such. Like "What's the Name of this Song" and the winner can get .. a prize? (hmm.. need to think more on this)

hmm.... i rather think it's a awesome idea ne. Having a Radio will definitely promote JCNET and attract more members to become more active?
anyways ...... nice going Mei Mei, for you to bring back the idea. LOL. I know you're very enthusiastic for it .. =)

03-04-2007, 08:30 PM
oh this is a good idea. but is there going to be more than 1 station because not everyone has the same taste. if there is going to be more than 1, i would like to volunteer. i have experience, i did the radio station at ucla in the summer.

sushii
03-04-2007, 08:40 PM
umm. i don't think they'll be more than one station..just one...because you have to use a lot of server space for just one. and as for dj's we'll have auditions

chineseguyjl
03-04-2007, 08:48 PM
jcnet owns this dedicated server right? which means unrestricted bandwidth right? but its still a server, hella lot of space, its only running a forum. then we're fine we got plenty of memory, and bandwidth. the other forums just made a miniplayer for windows media player or real player, whatever the person wants then feed a direct connection to an online broadcasting server, like live365.

sushii
03-04-2007, 08:55 PM
hmmm..right now i don't know about all that..we still need to get all the kinks figured out..running a radio isn't that easy..so it might not be up so soon..but if you have any suggestions feel free to comment.

jocsim
03-12-2007, 12:39 PM
Hmm....that's good idea of having radio at jcnet though....yea~got to listen to Jay's song when it broadcast before releasing his new album.Different radios will be better...!!And also radio that can received signals from all around the world...that would nice, but unfornately,it cost money for Karen lau jie(lol, sounds like i'm related to her very closely, lol XD)to run such a big system here in jcnet lol, well this is just my idea.

chineseguyjl
03-13-2007, 02:02 AM
it cant be that hard. i've done it on a couple of websites before. the hardest part is coding it, and thats just for design. just make a flash player that streams it directly from the dedicated shoutcast server. all u do is upload a playlist. if u want to talk just open the admin player. easy as a-b-c, or 1-2-3

and it wont cost more money. if u own the server already then u can do whatever u want. the only thing is if u dont own the server and ur already going by the bandwidth limit, i mean it doesnt add that much.

catseyes
03-16-2007, 06:46 AM
So do you mean, we can integrate a flash player into Vbulletin and then anyone can do a broadcasting via shoutcast? That's interesting, if what i asked is correct, i surely want to hear more about it~

YES! omg finally someone that gets it.

the integration part should be easy. but since its embedded that means when the page is refreshed then it will disconnect and reconnect. to solve this websites put the player into a header or a footer which doesnt refresh when clicking a link. or u can place it into a popup. the player, just make it feed the broadcast as a stream. if u do it that way it will take less than 1mb without the songs. prob be like 100kb.

I like the idea of having a radio here, since music (and singing along) is my hobby v^^

mmh... well... how about making some playlists like I tried on my blog??
http://dlparadise.blogspot.com
Go to the sidebar and check "Listen To Music Of..." then click on the one you would like to listen to ;)

A pop-up window will appear and you can start listening (note: songs are converted to 64kBit/s for faster loading)

The songs are hosted on http://www.musicwebtown.com and you'll get 10GB of diskspace and bandwidth if you sign up for a free account v^^

yeah... that would definitely be very cool... as I always end up listening to music anyway... and my comp is like... OMG... so many programs open at the same time.. so an online radio would help a little in that case :P

I'm not sure about being a DJ, too... I don't know what you all are listening to and what songs to upload in there... only asian music (chinese, korean, japanese etc.) or world music...

I have Jay's discography and 4 of Lee hom's latest albums
3 latest JJ lin albums
1 S.h.e album
All of nicholas teo album
All of show luo's albums

I have se7en discography and some epik high songs for those koreans

As many can see, this whole JCnet Radio has been on our mind for quite a bit of time (from 2005 onwards) but the replies in this thread have not been impressive in amount.

I've set up a poll to see if there is any real interest of putting the radio up and how each members can contribute to it.

Personally, I don't think I'll be able to use the radio when I am at work but some of you may think otherwise.

So do voice out through replies in this thread or make use of the poll to vote for it.

The idea is really cool...we all love to listen to good music while we're browsing JCnet...I personally do that every time I log in but even when it's really interesting and a lot of fun, it'd be a lot of work for our admins and mods...I don't know anything about creating a web site or installing this kind of device or whatever the name is…lol Yes I’m an idiot too…but it looks like a lot of work…and just running this place and keep it organize requires work…I don’t even want to imagine when we have the radio…this is just me talking of course.

Besides…some ppl have really bad conetion…for example me…sometimes JCnet takes forever to download…wouldn’t this be a problem for ppl like me???

I've voted for the third.. btw! If we'll be uploading the files to the site I've mentioned above (musicwebtown.com) I can be of some help at least :brows:

mmh.. it will definitely be much to do in the beginning.. but once it's up we only need to add/delete songs.... but it's hard to decide which songs to upload.. maybe making a request thread here for the radio listeners??!

about having slow connection.. I always convert all the songs in the playlists of my blog to 64kBit/s quality.. so it loads faster than normal (128kBit/s) mp3s and the audio quality is not that bad either ;)
how about you try one of my playlists and tell us how fast it loads for you? so we can some vague calculations..

Wow Jen you have thought this through huh??....I’m glad to see you all excited about this radio thing as well as the Fan subbing *wink*

Well if we see lots of activity in this thread…and if we have a decent amount of members agree with this and willing to be part of the team, maybe we will have a radio after all…let’s see what the admins and mods think about this project first.

Of course when the decision has been made we can start a poll and choose which songs we’re gonna use etc…those are final details…my major concern is the speed…but hey ok let’s try what you’re suggesting…so are you going to send me something?? I’m an idiot at this things lol

A radio would definitely be nice. There are only a few Mandarin stations on the Internet, and there are certainly no public stations for North Carolina, so I'd definitely listen, and I may be able to contribute some songs. I have most of Jay's albums, an F.I.R. album, some SH!N, Hei Long, and Black Ducks. Someone just introduced me to the Black Ducks, which explains why I've been translating their songs like crazy.

okay.. please go to my blog => http://dlparadise.blogspot.com/ -> look at the sidebar and search for this title "Listen To Music Of..." (it's right above the shoutbox, though) -> Click on "[+/-] Browse Playlists" (works only if you have javascript enabled!!!) -> Choose a playlist you want to listen to...

I am soo down for this :D, it'll be like Jay 24/7

I think someone mentioned that we can't broadcast songs from one album or one singer more than 3 times in a row. We may run into legal issues otherwise. So there will not be Jay 24/7.

I think the rule is you can't broadcast songs from one singer more than 3 times in a row or in one hour. so yea.

And if we have the radio, i'm sure we will get some talk shows going too

so it would be great to hear more diverse/different chinese/asian songs..

There is a radio on my other forum
In asianload, loaded by imeem i think.
You guys can have a look here, I think guests are allowed to listen to asianload radio
http://www.asianload.com/forums/index.php?showforum=101

They can stop the music or put the music in the background and can announce various news, competitions e.t.c stuff that happens like in a real radio just that the activities are forum relevant
Just by 2 cents worth, but I think Jen's proposal is more economical for the dial up users. (I can't excess the playlist on your site do I have to enable a script)?

wow... that radio is quite cool.. but a lot more work... I think

for listening to music in my blog you need to enable javascript and pop-up blocker!!! usually if you click on one of the playlists a new pop-up window with the discography appears

you can also try out the playlists from Flower Rain here => http://flowerrainsubs.blogspot.com/ (http://flowerrainsubs.blogspot.com/)

it's in the sidebar.. under the categorie "Jukebox"! We could also just make such a small and cute Jay layout here in JCNet... but that's something for skilled PS users
