Accessing the Chat Room Behind a Firewall/Proxy
I will keep the tech-talk to a minimum, and simply go through step-by-step instructions. I own a system with Windows XP and use Internet Explorer and MIRC to access the chat. I do not suggest using the Java applet, since it's very heavy on system resource usage, but if you cannot install MIRC because you're at work, then it's still okay.
At this point, I will only give a bare-bones set of instructions, but I will add more explicit instructions and screenshots in time.
A Primer
Basically, we will use two programs, Your-Freedom and SocksCap, to tunnel through your firewall and/or proxy to access the chat room. These two programs can be run without a need for installation. The two programs must be running while you are in the chat room.
First, Ask Yourself
A. Can you access chatting programs such as AIM and MSN?
If you can, that is a good sign. If you can't, this method *might* not work, but it still may.
B. What sort of connection do you have?
If you are on dial-up (56K), then this method may lag a bit. If you're on anything higher, the connection should be A-OK.
Alright, lets go!
Your-Freedom
1. Download Your-Freedom:
http://your-freedom.net/
Make yourself an account and follow the directions on the site.
2. Configure Your-Freedom:
a. Status Tab > Configure
b. on the Server Connection Tab, typeAddress: ems.your-freedom.de
Port: 443
Protocol: HTTPSAt the bottom, only check Redirect SOCKS4/5, Enable Encryption, and Enable Re-Keying.
c. on the account information tab, enter your account name and password.
d. on the Proxy Settings tab, enter your proxy information. If you must authenticate to use to internet, then enter that information here. If you are unsure if you are on a proxy, open your internet browser and check.
For IE: Tools Menu > Internet Options > Connections Tab > Lan Settings Button > Proxy Server field. If there is information in the proxy server field, copy it into Your-Freedom.
For Firefox: Tools Menu > Options > General Tab > Connection Settings Button > HTTP Proxy field. If there is information in the HTTP proxy field, copy it into Your-Freedom.
e. click Save and Exit.
SocksCap
1. Download Sockscap:
http://www.socks.permeo.com/Download/SocksCapDownload/index.asp
2. Configure Sockscap:
a. File Menu > Settings
b. on the SOCKS Settings Tab, enter:SOCKS Server: localhost
Port: 1080c. for Protocol, select SOCKS Version 5 and Resolve All Names Locally.
d. click OK
e. click the New button
f. type: Profile Name: Name of the program you need to use (IE, mIRC, etc)
Command Line: Ex: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeLeave the Working Directory as it is. Perform this for as many programs as you need to run through the proxy.
g. click OK.
Internet Explorer
Configure Internet Explorer
Tools Menu > Internet Options > Connections Tab > Lan Settings Button
Check "Automatically detect settings." Uncheck everything else.
Firefox
Configure Firefox
Tools Menu > Options > General Tab > Connection Settings Button
Select "Direct Connection to the Internet".
mIRC
Configure mIRC
Tools Menu > Options > Connect Tab
Fill everything in to your wishing.
Connect Tab > Servers SubtabIRC Network: Rizon
IRC Server: Rizon: Random Server
Connect Tab > Firewall TabFirewall Support: Both
Protocol: SOCKS5
Hostname: localhost
Port: 1080
Operation
Your-Freedom > Connect
SocksCap > Run Application
IE/Firefox > Go to the chat room
mIRC > Connect to Rizon, type /join #jcnet
That's it! Good luck ^.^
Additional Info:
Your-Freedom allows for a maximum of 64kbps upload and download. That's about 8kb/s each. It works for online games, too. Both Your-Freedom and SocksCap do not require installation.
