Today I was talking with my friends about issues on the world news when we both realized that we never hear anything about Canada. What happens Up there in America's friend to the north? It's so weird that a country so close to the US is almost never reported about in the US news.Something has to go on up there...but what? I'm completly at a loss for answers. So I 'm wondering, does anyone EVER hear ANYTHING about whats happening in Canada? :?

Hmm, jokes about Canada huh? I don't know any  Seriously, I live in the NL, but rarely hear news about Canada...it's like nothing big happens there. The only few things I know about Canada are a couple of famous Canadian people (Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne, Jim Carrey)

That's because they're happy herding their moose.

But really though - The US LIKES to be in the news.

very true, I never hear any news about/from Canada, although my country's adjacent to it. Maybe Canadians are very peaceful, quiet people. lol. I have no idea. I pretty much no nothing about Canada except what I've learned about in history - there's Quebec with French speaking people there and other stuff. haha.

LOL..

I live in Canada  and almost all the posts above made me burst into laughter :D and at the same time, it's kinda sad to know that the US citizens doesn't know that much about us.. when Canadian's know quite a lot.

But anyways, I agree with Chun Li.. because the US likes to be in the news. (not intended to offend people) .. so therefore, they might have eliminated all the news about us.

That's quite true. Sadly, even Canadians probably know more about the US than they do about Canadian current issues. But I guess there isn't much exciting to be reported on by the US media if we tend to be the neutral and silent type. There tends to be more news about big supporters of the US like the Brits. We can't help being neighbours, but it doesn't mean we go everywhere hand in hand.

Haha, nothing big ever happens in Canada. Those umm.. RCMP was it died? That's the most recent biggest thing I've heard. My dad rarely watches Canadian news, he always goes to CNN hahahaha Well, I guess he isn't missing anything except for car accidents and stuff... that's whats usually on Canadian news, minor things.

Hey,
I used to live across Lake Erie (the shallowest of the Great Lakes) from London, Ontario in Erie, Pennsylvania and somehow i got CityTV all the way from Toronto. They would talk about US political events as much as what was happening in Ottawa. Also, I like the Tories most of the time and was dissappointed that Paul Martin won last summer. I see Canadian Parliament on C-Span 2 a lot and it is so cool when the MPs jump from English right into French when they are giving a speech.

this is really different. lol this is the first time ive heard about an american youth having any interest of wut goes on in canada. this was directed to rickisha, and it was in a good way lol =)

anyway the question is.....do you guys really care?

wen i was in a history course, i remembered my teacher saying how u.s. and canada relations are very weak. some of the most influential u.s. ppl have no idea whether canada is to their north or south.

there was also this show that ive heard (not sure if its even airing) but its about this canadian reporter going down to the u.s. to ask questions about how much they knew about canada (something like that). most of their initial responses were "CANADA BROADCASTS THEIR OWN T.V?!"

but....its true theres not much major news up here. like anything that wud affect globally.
actually if u want some news, theres recently a missing lady. a young lady. i read about her in the news, at first glance she seems like another girl, but wut her friends wote about her was devastating. she was a soldier at heart and supporter. i hope they find her unharmed.

i actually perfer living in a safe place....szeeen?

hahaha you guys really need to stop thinking that us canadians are all lumberjacks! we're not....lol. we lead normal lives....wel i don't know...i live in toronto so maybe thats why....haha someone back me up here! and yes...we do broadcast a lot of our own tv here..city, much (i think some parts US has it too) global etc. and it's because what the US does tends to affect everybody so everybody is always on the lookout therefore its on the news. we never hear about US car crashes or anything just the political stuff.

Canada's just like the US but vastly smaller population wise as only the more southern part is densely populated. Our cities are nearly identical to yours, but once again we just have fewer.

The US media does not report on Canadian news because it simply does not need to. From an American viewer's point of view it would be pointless to hear about the random incidents in Canada. Another thing is that you're mostly watching national news shows with an abundance of american news to cover, with vast amounts of news to cover. In their eyes, there simply is no need to report Canadian events.

Besides that, things happening in Canada are mostly local incidents such as robberies, large vehicle accidents, planes stopped for inspection, lost soldiers from Iraq, politics, etc. Which has no affect on America.

The average Canadian is more knowledgable of the US than a US citizen to Canada because the US is THE most important country right now (no I'm not American, I'm Canadian). Globally, everyone knows the US, so generally Americans don't need to know about Canada. Though we are also one of the most wealthiest nations, a better developed country than the US democracy-wise, and hold the greatest untapped oil fields in our arctic north (though too difficult to harvest). We are one of the US' largest oil suppliers, though surveys show that most Americans don't even know that. Thought they are knowledgable to Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and other middle-east American-interest countries...

ANYWAY.. I'm sleepy.. what I just wrote might not make sense

 Canadians are pimps in disguise.

Okay, not. Canadian are relatively like Americans, there's crime in Toronto each day, just like NYC. There's crime in Montreal just like Compton. The only difference is the democratic system and a few language usage. Like in Quebec, people speaks French, and in the rest of Canada, it's english. SHUT UP, we're not all frenchies, and "Quebecois" aren't half frenchies, they have a way different accent from France people. Mostly news are in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, since those three are the main cities in Canada. OKAY, maybe the rest of them are Lumberjacks, but these three cities are way moving. There's huge buildings and lots of people walking around and it's really populated. Anyways, I don't know what to say about Canada. Oh yeah, there's violence everywhere, don't think canadians are just smoking some good ol' ones and checking the barnyard and see if the chicken's fled - NO. Canada is peaceful, but it is still a dangerous place. From rapes to murders, from marriages to divorces, from cute girls to sluts, there's everything here... don't know what to add.

Lots of stuff is going on in Canada, what do you all mean? ;)

Well, like Zhaohe said, stuff does go on, but there's just no need to report on it in the American news. As much as the United States affects us, it's not so much the other way around, while Canada is indeed very important to the United States, as we are your neighbour to the north and your number one trading partner, the United States is a huge influence on us, as it is on the entire world. A dear Canadian Prime Minister once described our relationship with the United States as "sleeping next to an elephant" where we are affected by "every twitch and grunt" ;) I'm not even sure how many Americans knew about the Liberal fallout in January and the Conservative government winning a minority.

News-wise, I'm a political junkie and I'm following the Liberal Leadership race at the moment, with my support behind Stéphane Dion. Some Canadian soldiers also recently were killed in Afghanistan by "friendly fire" from some American allies... and the New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton made some idiotic comments about talks with the Taliban? Oh, and the Green Party had a leadership convention :)

Much Music?

Wow, I didn't know it was popular in the States?!

The recent news I am aware of right now is the recent lost of four Canadian soldiers due to the suicide bombing at the war, and there's currently a debate on Canadians holding multiple nationalities.

But anyways, I agree with Chun Li.. because the US likes to be in the news. (not intended to offend people) .. so therefore, they might have eliminated all the news about us.

its true. many americans are very full of themselves. i'm not trying to offend people. but sometimes because the US is such a big and powerful country, they tend to naturally focus on themselves a lot more.

once i was watching this show on TV, and a person asked an american "name one country that is not in North America" and the person was like "umm.. asia..?" hellooo~ asia is not a country, now, is it?

americans like to study their own history only. a lot of times, they don't know that there are many big things happening OUTSIDE of their borders. not all, just some people =)

in canada, we have to study world history AND american history AND canadian history.

getting back to the topic of this thread.. canada has many news. and its not just little news. for example, a recent news was that last week or something 19 people were injured and 1 was killed in montreal at a gun shooting at a college. that was big news.

and of course there's news about all these poor canadian soldiers killed in afghanistan because of the war there..

i don't know. maybe because USA is a more powerful and bigger (as in population) country, there are more scandals and international news involving them. but canada is a great country too!

if i offended any americans in my post.. i didn't mean to and i'm sorry. i'm just saying.. this is my opinion on americans and how i see them. thats all. nothing bad. i mean, i love americans too! we're neighbours aren't we?

beside that it is mostly pop news such as the music channel err..i forgot what is it called and canadian idol show.

is it much music? cuz that really is a great channel =)

canadian idol in america? wowzers. never knew THAT~

lol what funny posts u guys have!!
im from toronto, canada, and its true, canada is a pretty quiet place.
and we DO hear a lot of stuff from US so its sad that u guys dont know a lot about us. and yeah, i sometimes think that canada has a lot of minor accidents instead of big issues like the US, but thats probably because we dont have pres. bush XD
and most of the incidents that happen here dont really affect the US in any way, but US usually influences almost everyone around the world.

Well, us canadians are peacekeepers so we dont really create havoc around the world like the Americans! :D They just seem to be more like the trouble-makers I guess? And they do seem full of themselves. No offence intended! :-) America is also bigger and much more powerful. Canada is also a pretty new country so that maybe why?

hmm I don't think so?
I don't know but using the word 'new' is a bit awkward ^^;

Anyways..
In Canada, our current biggest news is definitely about Robert Pickton. He's titled Canada's worst serial killer. I am just wondering if the US media talked about this case or not? And how much?

I was just watching the news about it .. and I think the anchor was saying how the judges (or people who are part of the case) really wants the media to give a neutral perspective to the audience.. and then the experts were saying that Canada have been doing quite a good job at it in this case/trial.

wow, alot more Canadians here than i thought. Are most of the people here in the Toronto area? or just even sprinkled around the country?

Yah, Canada is a cool place, its like America but less intense and more "quiet" if you must. Just has a totally different feel whenever i travel to the US cuz its looks and feels different from Vancouver.

Oh yah, no Timbits in US, but no Jack-in-the-box in Canada. ... tough but fair trade.

mel: yes we are peace-keepers! hahaha! but that doesn't mean we're country men, heck no.

canada is actually the best place ever! city, country, forest, and lots of water and resources! the city is great, actually. not overly-crowded, but busy too. and the people downtown are all so chic! toronto and vancouver are awesoooome =)

I'm in Canada. Guess nothing huge is happening here right now. Usually the only time you hear much is when something really bad happens...so maybe okay to be a little quiet? hahaha
We have snow now where I am. It is cold. Canadian dollar is worth more than US dollar...hmmmm...what else??
Canada is a great country. Not many moose around where I live though!! hahaha
It is also really hard to find anything on Jay here in Canada. No one ever hears about him, or hears his music. It is a shame!!
Anyone else from Toronto area here?

ask4more_jay

puukiness: ahahaha yeah we're more peaceful than usa i guess haha
and many people are stereotypical in thinking
that we're all inuits living in snow or whatever
but its not true!
we're pretty similar to seattle, WA
at least vancouver is
we're a pretty country
with trees, city, lakes, oceans, mountains, peaceful homes, and fashion
all in one! :-)
i love this place ~
