Btw, I'm new to this site so I'm not sure about the mix of culture among the members.

I want to know what you think of Jay's music if you do NOT understand chinese. This question is probably going to be targeted to mostly non-Chinese people because even most Chinese people who cannot read/write Chinese properly can understand some of his lyrics.
I'm quite curiously because one day when I was at school and blasting the first song in the 8th Dimension album out in my room, and one of my friends (rapper) came along and loved the beat. He wanted to use the beat for his own English lyrics.

So do you love Jay's MUSIC even if you don't understand what he's on about? Do you think it would be cool if someone in the West realised how good his music really is, and adpots it (obviously with Jay's permission) with English lyrics?

well...if i couldn't speak chinese or understand...at all..i would still like his music..but i mite not have heard of jay if i wasn't asian...^^.....jay is popular among most of asia instead of western countries..i like the melodies in his songs...and the beats too....so if i don't understand the lyrics..i'll still love him..but maybe not as much.....cuz the lyrics mean a lot to me....and i would like it more if i understand it.....i listen to korean songs too...cuz i like the melodies....but i can't understand ANYTHING besides "sa ran hae" which means i love u lol...so my korean friends translate if for me..and i like the song even more....^^

it would be cool if the west realized how talented this young man is....that way his popularity wouldn't ONLY be in asia....it would be global~....but....i don't think it would be cool if they put in english lyrics wid his melodies....i think jay's melodies should be used ONLY wid jay's own voice.....that way its more unique and rare.....so i don't think that they should fill in english lyrics to his music....even though it will be good to if jay can be heard in the west ^^ but thats just my opinion lol

hmmm...i'm chinese...but have pretty much zero chinese language skills...ok...so maybe i'm slightly above zero....but only slightly :D

i think i'm only appreciating jay's music from a superficial level...as sad as that is....when i read the lyrics...i fall in love with them...but when i listen to his music..i can only hear the feelings thru the tones and through the music....i am missing a large part of the song....tho i still believe i can appreciate and love his music very much even with out the words. i like to think his heart and soul goes into the music as well as the words.....so....

i did send some of jay's songs to a white friend of mine...this guy is a music person...plays music, writes music etc etc...and he loved jay's music. thought it was really good....said it made his day :D so...yay...brought jay into someone's life :D

blah...i've no idea what i've just written and i'm not going to go back to edit it.....cos i'll just feel like an idiot,....so i'll elave it as is.......

Im cantonese, so its not unusual for me to listen to mandarin music. But I have played some of Jays songs to my english friends. They think its ok but didnt like it cos they couldnt understand it..but one of them really liked the music and appreciated his talent...and she loves to play them on the piano! So it depends really...its obviously harder to start enjoying listening to someone if you dont understand what he or she is singing..but many people have overcome this poblem to listen to Jay!

well, though i am chinese and i understand his lyrics, i think that most non-chinese people enjoy his music just because of the music itself...the obvious emotions, and the rhythm or melody of the song. I can probably relate to this, because i love listening to japanese music, and really, i don't know any japanese except for probably one or two words in the song, but i still love it, because of the song and the way it was sung, and i guess that also applies to non-chinese people who like Jay.

I'm a chinese too, though sometimes i cannot understand wat he's singing, I always had to look up the lyics book! :bleh: I think for the non chinese, they still can adopt to his songs, since Jay didn't sing them bery clearly too! :wink2: I think what i like more is the tune of the songs,( which was composed by our beloved Jay! :excited: ) more than the lyics!

I think a good comparison of Jay in the western world is Craig David. They both have this "clean" image and are very music orientated. They are both young and talented although Jay writes better music. They both brought the R&B taste to the hearts of many people.

Maybe one day they should collaborate. Craig can use Jay's music with his own lyrics.

i dunno what non chinese ppl think about Jay's songs but when i asked my non asian friends if it was weird when they listen to the Jays songs that i play and they said no....most of them actually like "Ninja" the most....

I think a lot of western people from my experience love the 1st song in 8 dimensions the most. It's just really catchy I guess....

I think most people, especially western people, don't appreciate the subtlety in Jay's songs.

i dun speak a word of chinese, but Jay's voice is really soothing and I like his beats.I sometimes would put Jay's CD on at school during art class, and alot of people liked him...
I mean, alot of people appreciate rap for the beats...I guess it's kinda the same thing w/Jay.His voice is so pretty also...

Yeah, I Jay does hit some high notes, but I don't think he sounds like a girl!

I'm glad other people appreciates Jay in your art class getsu, the more we introduce Jay to new people, the better! Spread the love!

Like some people who have posted in this thread, I too don't know much Chinese. But not too long ago I have been listening to more chinese music. And i guess it all started when somebody kept telling me how good jay is. So i listen to a few songs and I was hooked.

I dunno what else to say other than that I like Jay's songs. He exudes coolness. Oh yea, I like his rapping too. :excited:

well, it kind of depends on how the person is who is listening to the music! if that person REALLY knows how to understand the music and enjoy it, then they'll think jay's music is very good, but if it's someone who doesn't really go INTO the details and just says, " i don't know what he is saying, it stinks." but usually non-chinese people would go the "i don't know wha the is saying, it stinks" route! because they can't understand the thing! you can't really blame them, THEY CAN'T UNDERSTAND IT! that's the first conclusion they come to! and they stick with it and say that it stinks JUST because they can't understand the thing! *takes deep breathe*

tongzilla
07-25-2003, 03:13 AM
ammie- i totally agree with you, these people just think Jay is just another popstar with regular music but sung in Chinese, so they don't appreciate the real beauty of his music.

But I think there is a little more than "i don't know what he is saying, it stinks", because when I first listened to Jay, I didn't know what he was saying at all, but I kinda know I bit of mandarin, so I was used to the sounds of the words. This makes a big difference from someone who doesn't know what he is saying AND doesn't know any mandarin. The sounds of the language are foreign to them so it probably takes more time to get used to.

It's hard to explain....I better stop now before I b.s. even more...!

i can't really relate to this question because i don't really listen to music i don't understand. i guess it's possible because i listen to a few japanese/korean songs, but there's no way i could get into it enough if i have no idea what they're singing. i guess it's a gift, that all you people who don't understand mandarin have that i personally don't have the patience for :)

i feel that music is a universal language in itself.
i adore Jays music. i only know what hes saying through translations.

i love music in all its forms, so language has no boundry for me. lots of pp i know cant bare to hear music they dont understand. but i just say "sucks to be you" and leave.

as a child i have always been verry multicultral. learning about my roots and the families of my friends. it was rather inevitable that i beacame interested in music from around the world.

07-29-2003, 11:29 PM
yeah. like everyone else. i've noticed jays lyrics are the body of the song since some people (critics, etc) say it all "sounds the same". the lyrics really differentiate music. his in particular

i've noticed that some people who cant understand the language they are listening to usually resort to the sound OF the lyrics. not the meaning- not all fans translate songs. i think if you listen to something you don't understand. it creates a different feeling. you take a slightly different...... road ^^

i am thai. :)
i cannot speak chinese.
i never learn chinese and never think of it.
only my face somehow look a bit like chisese girl.
i never like chinese songs even though i have heard some of them.
i usually listen to english songs and some of thai songs and Utada Hikaru japanese songs and few spanish songs.
my first time listening to jay's song was from the few second commercial ads of panasonic mobile.
believe it or not?
that song was in my mind for days.
finally i just had enough. :profanit:
what the hel is that song? :ranting:
i spent my time to searh for the singer and song title.
later on, my friend bought his 8d cd for me. :hugz:
i listened to it the whole night over and over again.
dont know how to explain. it's like he sings from his heart. i like it very much.
soon after that i went out and bought his 2 previous cds and the one concet.
 absolutely no regret
his music is really great.
one thing i must say, thanks to many websites including jay-chou.net that have pinyin and translation of his songs so i can :sing: along (when i'm alone, of course) and understand what he's singing.
now i wanna learn chinese so badly. :whoops:

azndreamer88, I know what you mean...this happens to people from my school as well. They are into the Jay for a while, but they kinda forget about it when I'm not listening to it....except for my chinese friends of course!

Don't mean to be racist but white people do have shorter attention spans!

Chun Li
07-30-2003, 07:38 AM
That's why they try to kick all the immigrants out of the country. Then when they realize that their attention spans are too short to run groceries, laundries, and other "menial" labor type jobs, they open the borders again and then blame it on immigrants wanting to sneak over to the US to cover their asses.

well, my mandarin sucks (it's like talking to a 5 year old when you talk to me), but i still love and appreciate Jay's music. As many have already said, music is a universal language, and I totally agree w/ that. I still listen to KPOP, JPOP, etc. even though I don't understand it... Jay's talent is unbeatable...I'd rather buy his stuff over any western artist any day. Besides, the music draws me in before the lyrics do...

Haha, I'm Cantonese and taking classes to learn Mandarin...and I still don't have a clue what Jay Chou is trying to sing. I'm sure his lyrics are great...but not even my fluent Chinese speaking friends understand him...so knowing Chinese or not...I think a lot of people are listening to the beat of the music, not necessarily to the words.

I was going on one of my Jay Chou craziness two months ago...and when my sister's boyfriend (he's Hispanic) came over and heard Jay Chou, he was all like, "dude, that's tight. Hey, can I borrow your CD so I can burn it...?"

haha...so regardless of being Chinese or not...Jay Chou's music surpasses language barriers... haha that was so cliche...

Im learning mandarin too! But the lessons are an hour every week with the entire church (kids who have chinese lessons) in the main hall. So i cant learn much, and i dont pay a lot of attention so the 6 year olds at the front know more than me... But weve only done the pronouciation and the pinyin...

The main reason jay stands out from the rest is his music, so i guess tt's y non chinese appeal to his music. His rap is so fast tt as chinese we sometimes dun catch wat he is saying unless wit lyrics. Of cos he wrote good lyrics, in fact most of my fav songs r written by him.

Cheers to the rest of the world who can related to jay's music, his unique way of blending chinese music intrument into r & b is remarkable!

I'm malay and fascinated with foreign culture, western and eastern. I fell for Jay's songs after just hearing "Ke Ai Nu Ren" for the 1st time it was aired. The melody was refreshing. I love how he puts the fusion of western and traditional eastern sounds together. His lyrics are so heartwarming. I don't know much mandarin, but studying the lyrics with chinese scripts+pinyin+english helped me understand his songs better. I love singing along to his songs. I say more ppl should be introduced to his songs. Let us encourage him more (^_^)/

Last time i went to UCLA to visit a friend and we were in the elevator and heard this one white girl talking about Jay to her persian (i think) friend. It was pretty funny listening in cuz the white girl was like: "have u heard of Jay Chou? He's Chinese and his songs are pretty good. You should listen to it...Tornado is my fav..." Me and my friend were just looking at each other like "omg...i cant believe im hearing this" haha...so after we got out the elevator we just laughed at what we just heard and saw.

So i guess Jay is making an impact among non-asian ppl too hehe

It was really funny...because one time when I was just showering like at 1 am, there was this girl humming Jay Chou's music. I was so intrigued that I had to shout out, "ARE YOU SINGING JAY CHOU'S MUSIC?" haha. Yea it was weird talking to someone in the showering...and when I stepped out...I saw the girl who was singing. She was Indian....haha. It's amazing!

i'm japanese and i don't know the chinese language at all. i tend to like his songs that are more upbeat and that has a catchy tune, such as "ban shou ren" and "ninja." but if i knew what jay was singing, i would probably like his more mellow songs, such as "cute woman" and "love before the century." after i found out what the lyrics to "cute woman" and "love before the century" meant, i totally liked those two songs. ^-^

but sometimes when lyrics are translated into english, the song may lose its sense of "beautifulness" and/or "poeticness (is that even a word?x_X oh well, hehehe^^;;; ). i know, b/c i kinda know japanese and when i see translated lyrics of japanese songs into english, i'm like "uh...i think it sounds better in japanese." it's hard to find equivalent words when translating from one language to another without losing its meaning. >_< so even if i do know the meaning of the lyrics for "cute woman" and "love before the century," i feel like i'm missing out on something, b/c uh...i don't know...-.- ;;; *bleh*

ahhhhh, i don't know know what i'm trying to say, so if u're confused...uhhh, sorry sorry. >_<

oh yeah, i think there were a couple of ppl who said that jay sounds like a girl when he sings. that's what i thought too when i listened to his songs closely. i thought his voice did sound like a girl's! >_< ;;;

i introduced jay to a lot of my non-chinese friends (white, indian, viet, korean, jap) and in general they seem to like it. they may not understand his lyrics (but then again it's hard for some chinese people to understand all his mubbling) but they definetly are hooked by his melodies. so far 13/15 of the friends that i've introduced him to like him.

i even went to a korean restaurant and they were just spinning his cd not stop there. i went there on 3 separate occasions and spent more than 1hr eating there, and each time... it was jay on the speakers.

i'm not sure if they do do this, perhaps fans from korea and japan can verify this, but avex (japan music company) translates japanese lyrics into chinese. maybe if enough people email bmg/sony they'll consider translating jay's lyrics into english. long shot in the dart... but hey, couldn't try to hurt.

and yes... i did say do do.... :excited: emphasis on the 2nd do

yeah, it would be so so cool if sony could do a translation of jay's upcoming albums with pinyin. Hasn't sony realised yet by now that there is just as big a market for non-chinese listners to Jay as chinese listeners? Doing this would certainly increase our enjoyment...and it would save a lot of sweat and blood for those poor souls who spend all their free time translating and adding pinyin lyrics for us.

Maybe one day we'll see on the cover of Jay's albums: "translated into more than 80 languages world-wide!" (jk)

i love all of jay's songs cause of the music, beat, rhythm, and of course cause of his unique style. another reason why i like jay's music is cause he can play with a lots of instruments from the string family. cello, viola, is guiter one of them? well i know there is one thing i can do that jay can't and that is i can play the violin. :wink2:

i'm viet and i understand a little cantonese and am trying to learn mandarin. i don't knoe alot of viet people that like jay, and when they ask me what kind of music i listen and i answer chinese they give me that sour face. my friends are narrow minded can't learn to accpect muticultural music. plus i think viet raps sound weird. hey maybe its just me.

I think .. culture difference and listener's experience are the reason.. me who is a Thai and don't know any chinese and never listen to chinese music before ,when i heard Jay's for the first time , I was in the hospital. On the screen was The F4 Blue power Concert ( yes F4 is famous in Thailand also .. very much ) Our Jay joined that concert too ..That's first time I know him ..The song ye ye pao de cha and dragon punch was performed and I said WoW...the next day I went to the cd shop and buy The One Live vcd which was sold the first day in that day!!! and after that ..I went to buy all 3 albums^_^ Now ( 12 August ) The fourth album is not coming to Thailand yet :-x ..and I'm waiting for that ...Eventhough I cant understand chinese at all but Jay's music itself which i think rare to listen from Thai singer is really good and i appreciate it much :)

i'm a foreigner myself, and at first, i would usually listen to american pop/hip-hop/r&b music...and then when i reached high school, during in-between breaks, my taiwanese classmates would play mandarin pop music by taiwanese singers so my first impression of their music wasn't so good since it was my first time listening to them...but when they kept telling how famous this chinese guy jay chou was getting, they lemme listen to a few of his songs from fantasy...of course, i could only understand a little of the lyrics since my chinese isn't really fluent enough yet...and then later, when i kept hearing his songs being played on the radio and watching his music videos on tv, i was growing to like him. from then on, i've started appreciating chinese pop music and that's when i decided to buy his latest album that time which was fantasy, and then i searched if he had other albums besides it so i got his first one as well.

jay is the first taiwanese singer that got me interested in chinese music. now my taste in music has expanded to chinese music, korean music and japanese music...i don't quite like cantonese music though because the accent is so funny.

I'm Chinese so I'm supposed to understand his lyrics without much difficulty. (Will admit though that I find some of Fang Wen Shan's more meaningful lyrics, eg. Shuang Dao, difficult to understand; need a dictionary.) For Jielun I have set aside my 'lyrics is important' rule. I'm his fan mainly because of the music. His melodies are beautiful, amazing and the things that he does, out of this world.

So even if he were like Japanese or whatever I'd still listen to him. Probably won't be fanatical over him but I'd buy his albums.

I have a Malay friend who listens to him though. That's cool.

i am a non Chinese and the only Chinese I know is "wei" and don't even know if it's mandarin or cantonese. I first heard Chinese music about a year ago and i found it kinda funny since it was different. But i liked it none the less. As i liked the clip i had found (wasn't the whole song, just like a 30sec clip) i found more clips & found my self attatched. I had bought Edison Chen's c.d. "Ed Is On" (he was the clip i had found) off of ebay. I loved the c.d. & played it all the time. I found out more Chinese artists and started listening to them on the computer, since it's soo hard to find. I just recently found out Jay and even though i have no idea what they are saying, i love it. And then i look up lyrics online. granted since i know no titles, finding them is quite hard, but I manage (bsides edison's new album, which if ne1 knows where i can find them translated, i would love u forever!) But i much more prefer Chinese music to american music. I have found that Chinese music has meaning behind their lyrics compared to american music which right now is practically all about sex, drugs & hoes. So, maybe that answers your question.

my classmates, thou they are chinese but they dun speak chinese, n even if they do u'll hav a hard time trying to understand what they are saying. basically they are jus the type who listens to english pop n noes nuts abt the chinese music industry. well then jus three yrs ago, me n a bunch of frens who were crazy over with jay, brought jay's album (the fantasy album) to school everyday. n we played his album during break time n after school. n so my class got to know jay n started listening to jay n liking jay's music. the most common comment from them was "i duno wad he's singing but the music is very nice." n interestingly, one of them always copied his lyrics to school n asked me for their meaning. n i remembered the hardest lyrics to explain was 'fen lie'. -_-"

I am not chinese and I cannot understand chinese too but I am crazy about Jay so much :bleh: . I think even if I cannot understand chinese, I still can understand his feeling or his message that he want to send to us.

For me, the important thing that make me love him is his music. I feel like I cannot find the music that attract my heart like Jay's music from anywhere else.Understand or not understand the meaning is not my probrem at all.I thanks god all the time that I have a chance to know him, listen his music and make me very happy every time that hear his music. I'm Chinese, but I suck at the language. I can (kinda) understand it when people talk... but I can almost never comprehend lyrics.

I don't think language is very important when it comes to music, though. Like, I really like Jpop and Jrock but the only Japanese I know is a few words.

I'm not a Non chinese but I might share what my non chinese friends think of Jay.

I have Indian friends who go, "this is a nice song" when they heard Qing Tian and "Hey, I think this is the best song of all." when they heard Tong Yi Zhong Diao Diao.

Chinese or not, people of different race react the same when they hear nice music, regardless of any language. I have a friend who learnt how to say, 'Wo shi Jie Lun de ke mi'(I am Jay's fan) because she really felt that she should learn it.

and Jay said so himself, he likes to see people of different races to listen to his music.

I don't think it matters. I used to be really into kpop, that is, before I got my hands on Jay's 4th album =P Anyways, I didn't understand a word but I loved it. It's really more about the beat/melody.

I'm not Chinese, infact, I'm actually a "White Guy'". I was introduced to Jay by a Chinese friend of mine, I was actually borrowing some of his Korean CDs (I've grown up with a strange kind of love for Japanese and Korean music - and have studied both languages), "The Eight Dimensions" album was mixed in with those, I gave it a listen and after hearing "Ban Shou Ren" I was hooked, and have been ever since! There's something about the beats that Jay uses that really appeals to me, and although I understand very little Mandarin, there's something about his voice and lyrics that's soothing to me. I never really get bored of his music, there's always something to keep me interested.

I feel that westerners usually have a very stereotypic view when it comes to all things chinese. For examples, they think that Chinese movies are all about gong-fu and nothing esle. Sometimes I just can't stand it that the Americans can't be bothered to even give Chinese music a chance. For me, I am a pure Chinese who studies in a Chinese school. But haha, my chinese is really terrible. Still, I get thru. So understanding Jay's music is not a problem to me. I dig his lyrics! They are so different from the usual American and other Chinese songs.
When I was in sec 1 and 2, I only listened to english music and very extremely sadly, I was one of those 'westerners' that I mentioned earlier. I hated chinese music and looked down upon it. I only knew British and American songs. I even remember laughing with my friends at Jay Chou cos of the fantasy album cover. But then in sec 3, I heard long quan at my school's chinese new year concert and me and my 'westernised' friend became so totally hooked that from then onwards, we were converts of Jay Chou music!
If only Jay's record company is willing to advertised heavily on Jay Chou in Japan and America, I have absolute faith that he will make it. I have this 27 yr old Jap friend who likes Jay music a lot. I'm really proud of Jay that he has so many fans all over the world. To me, it is such a shame that there are still barriers and stereotypes for him to break. But, because he is Jay Chou, though he sings in mandarin, he will make it BIG internationally.

hmmm...i am a singaporean and chinese and i would say my Chinese standard is quite good...so i dunno if i should have a say here. but if i am a non-Chinese...i think i would like Jay's music coz it's simply so good. usually, lyrics play a big part in how much i like a song, but i have heard some Jap songs which i dun understand but loved them...so i guess the music speaks for itself. but the music itself has to be very very good to be able to achieve that, and of coz Jay's music is undoubtable! thank goodness i understand Chinese well coz i totally enjoy Jay's music and lyrics, and i would say my Chinese has improved even more with Jay's music and Fang Wen Shan and Huang Jun Lang's very chim lyrics. I have a Malay friend who understands a little Chinese, but loves Jay and Ah Mei though! heehee!
i know Jay's dream has always been to spread "Hua Ren de Yin Yue" to the world...coz we all know how the world worships anything American (personally, which i feel doesnt have that mushc substance) ..so he would be so happy to know that non-Chinese listen to him! Yet! our dear Jay insists on speaking in Chinese at international award shows, becoz THAT is HIM, and thats wat he has to offer! so proud of him! :-)

I've already posted my thoughts on this, but i do have to say that being an American, it is stereo typical to assume and not pay ne attention, to some one who has a Chinese accent. If some1 has any accent it's automatically, "I can't understand them" w/ out giving them a chance. Much like the "flied lice" If they have an accent its automatically assumed they can't sing. But being brought up, not in, but a respect & knowing of the Chinese culture & beliefs, i respect that Jay doesn't really want to learn English, (he hasn't for yrs then automatically he wants to, i'm thinking the record company & manager had something to do wit that) i d/ see a need for him to. yes to communicate, but he has communicated for yrs. He sings Chinese music in Chinese speaking countries, why learn?? Guess since we don't have to learn other languages, but everyone else has to learn our dumb English, i hate that. Were listening to his Chinese lyrics & music, no need to learn english.

even though I'm chinese, I'm not good at speaking it. I understand simple everyday kind of chinese but when i listen to Jay talking on da tv, I cant understand half of it which makes me frustrated, of coz. I got to know Jay thru my fren and her chinese is even worse den mine, yet she loves Jay Chou and kept playin his songs to me. So, now, I'm doin da same thing to my other fren! muahaha. I played his songs everytime I'm with her. She's also a chinese but she has absolute no knowledge of chinese. At first, she said Jay Chou's ugly which kinda offended me but honestly, Jay isn't the best-looking artiste around but whu cares, I still love him. So, eventually, she started to like his songs but she dun understand a single thing. She said his songs have a weird starting. Like Yi Fu Zhi Ming had dat eerie sound in da beginning. So, now, she even asked me to lend her his Qi Li Xiang cd. Mission accomplished!

I'm pretty sure that we can make anyone like Jay's music if we play it a lot around them. It just have to be brought to their attention because people who are chinese don't really pay attention to chinese music or songs that's sung in a language that they don't speak. Most people listen to songs that their friends listen to so I guess it's influential. I used to be someone who have absolutely no interest in chinese music. I didn't like Jay either because he sang chinese songs, lol. But I finally gave in to my friends who kept on mentioning Jay and I listened to his CD a couple of times and I loved it. Everyone have a different taste in music. I think Jay's got a good variety for different listeners. Rap, R&B, ballads,rock...it's all in his CD.
Also, some of my friends say that they absolutely hat Jay but when they don't think I'm looking, they would steal my CD and listen to it. Haha...they just don't want to admit it.

I play Jay's songs in my car all the time. One time my friends who listens to all sort of music (in English) said "Garden Festival" (From QLX) sounds very backstreet boy-ish. But he likes "Chaotic Dance in Spring Autumn" because it's got this cool rap part in it. He liked "Wound of War" because of the rap too. I guess it really depends on how much a person appreciate the music. I listen to Japanese and Korean songs even though I have no idea wht the lyrics mean, but I like them because it's good music.

I am a Western girl from the US, but I love Jay! Even my friends are slowly coming around to his music (cuz I play it all the time). Sometimes it is kinda weird to go to concerts and talk with other Jay fans, cuz I stand out, I am very pale and I have red-blond hair, so it's obvious I am Westerner. But once people get past that and let me try speaking some Mandarin, they are impressed and then we talk about Jay! So I think Jay could make it into Western countries if you just gets the right amount of publicity. I have even heard Japanese songs play on my school campus television, so I know Jay could be a hit here!!

I'm not Chinese... can understand basic mandarin though, but the first time I saw his videos on Channel V... I like him. I don't understand the essence of the songs but I love his voice and his style. He's not that good-looking but he has this "X FACTOR" that attracts the listeners.

All I wish for: whoever is his manager, they would be able to realize that Jay is being acclaimed internationally now and that they have to address the needs of his fans from other countries with different languages. It's kinda tedious to translate his songs in all languages but at least, always include in his album an english translation. Just like what Korea is doing right now.

You know what? :?
I've learned to speak a few Chinese words,
thanks to Jay's growing influence on me.
His music means a lot to me.
It has been my guiding path and its attributes
have contributed a lot to my whole being.
I must say that Jay has become a part of my life.
Knowing Jay and hearing his music often
greatly affected and changed my individuality.
Even if I don't understand Chinese,
I can feel the emotions throughout his songs.
The music gives justice but the essence is in the lyrics.
So I tried singing along to his songs
over and over again until I memorized them.
It's done involuntarily. While singing along to his songs,
the lyrics that meant nothing to me registered on my mind
that I can recite it in pretty good Chinese -
with perfect diction,pronunciation and timing.
Addicted to his music,I discovered the significance of his songs
through his heartfelt music and heartwarming lyrics.
Through Jay,I have learned to respect other people's
culture and I understand our interracial differences.
It made me proud of my Chinese roots.
My paternal granfather is half-Chinese so I guess
I became more interested with my genealogy
and more curious about my ancestry and descendance.
It's all because of Jay.
His music made me love things previously unknown to me.
I appreciate all of his songs even if they're ununderstandable to me.
I'm proud to say that I can speak a few Mandarin words now,
most notably the most often repeated words in his songs.
I just wish I can also give justice to his songs whenever I sing them.
I thank God for giving me the precious chance of getting to know Jay
and the privilege of hearing his music.
Jay Chou is my link to the Asian world
for his music unminds all barriers,
surpasses all obstacles and skips all hurdles
I must encounter in order to discover the real world of Jay
and experience the greatest gift I could ever receive - Jay's music.

i like jay's music because its emotions and themes are very universal and appealing...

though some might say he just mumbles and "murders" Fang Wen Shan's lyrics...the bottomline is its still jay's unique style of performing that makes the songs ultraelectromagnetic diao!

I think I'm an example. I'm actually Malay.

I started to like Jay since his QI LI XIANG album. Since then, I've become a huge fan. Even my Chinese friends are surprised how fanatic I am over Jay seeing as how I don't understand the language and ironical it is.

His singing is my greatest attraction about him. It's just soothing and different to listen to. Then would be his looks and composing skills.

Well I'm not chinese. But I do understand Mandarin. And yes, I love his music. His beats are the best, and the lyrics are great. I don't think you have to be chinese, to enjoy it. Just like you don't have to be black to enjoy fried chicken!!:D(Not a racial slur, because I'm black) Just a joke. But you don't have to be a certain color to enjoy music. Music is something that is universal, something that makes you tick. No matter what race you are, or what status qoe you are in.

well, jay's music is just kinda like touches my heart the first time i heard it though i don't understand a word he said as i'm a malay....
and my whole class already know that i'm a fan of jay...
majority of them are malays.......
and they used to feel it's weird for me to like jay, but they're used to it now...
my chinese friends also felt its kinda odd for me to like jay.,..
and after malay friends heard jay's songs, they also said they're pretty good...
so, language is not the main problem in jay's music...

I am cambodian but i'm a big Jay fan due to the fact that his music is so soothing and unique like everyone else said before me. I'm slowly understand mandarin thanks to him hahaha even if he mumbles it. but its through Jay I started liking more mando music like Wang Lee Hom, David Tao, Jolin Tsai, Vivian Hsu and what not. The ability he has to make music that goes beyond language barriers is inspiring. i want be able to do something like that one day

I'm KOREAN. I love Jay's music. I don't mindlessly listen to his music, though... thanks to this site, I look up the meaning of the lyrics... and although I can't fully capture the meaning of the lyrics since words seem to lose their meaning when interpreted into another language... I understand that the real meaning of his songs are probably 10x more beautiful than what I can understand. I'm taking Cantonese & Mandarin Chinese, and I can understand a little... but I know at this age, it'll be super hard to fully grasp the true meaning of Chinese... but yea... same goes for Chinese who try to learn Korean, right? :)

But yea, many singers I am interested in that are Chinese (HK and Taiwan)... like Leehom, JJ Lin, F.I.R., Nicholas Tse, Joey Yung, Eason Chan... I always try my best to read what their lyrics are about... and I ALWAYS apprecaite singers who can sing well live... and all the above that I mentioned sound amazing live.

Music is universal~ but don't mindlessly listen to bad lyrics =P

I love Long Quan the first time I heard it because it sounded so western and I loved the rock beat in it. I was really bad in chinese and I counldn't understand a word he said, but I still live that song. I think that non-chinese people will probably like Jay's songs if they gave it a chance.

Well, I mean, when I asked my friends, they heard Jay's music and thought that he was only mumbling and humming along with the rythm. I mean, if you're taiwanese and you understand the lyrics, the song becomes more interesting, meaningul and melodic.

The first time I listened to Jay, I had NO idea what he was saying. His first song, Black Humor was my first song ever listened from him, I bought his Album even though I didn't understand a word. I'm chinese, cantonese, I take chinese mandarin classes since last year and now I understand a bit what he says, it's even MORE touching if you understand what he says, I now look back into An Jing, Ni Ting de Dao, Hei Se You Mo, and I feel like, dang!

I met Jay 3 years ago...
When I first heard him rap, all I ever heard was mummble jumble. :D At the time I thought every Chinese pop, RNB, etc music was like that LOL. Anyways now I think his raps has nice beats. I like how the rythum flows in his raps. Sometimes Jay makes me laugh when he raps because he mumbles words that sounds like my language! LOL. In his song nunchucks when he says:
幹什麼 幹什麼
zen mo gai zen mo gai!!!!
It sounds like STUPID CHICKEN, STUPID CHICKEN!!! in my language.
When he sings slow ballads, I don't think his voice is very powerful to hold long notes and reach high notes like Lee Hom but I feel that his voice is very soft, gentle, and emotional. I think the magic to why I keep on listening to Jay's music over and over even though I don't the meaning of his lyrics is because his melodies and rythums are very nice. I like it a lot :D

I'm English and like all sorts of random music. I think Jay Chou is awesome and very talented. Some of my favourite songs are by Jay Chou.

I'm Vietnamese and Jay is my favorite artist. I can't undestand the words, but you don't need to. It's still enjoyable. Even though I can't understand, Jay's words and the feel of the song convey what the lyrics would have already done. Plus, his beats are amazing. :D

I'm Filipino so I can't understand at all except the pbvious ones I already know. But just because of our nationalities, it doesn't mean we can't listen to chinese music, which I do a lot. Even if I don't understand, I like the melodies and the feeling of the music. Besides, I'm going to start learning Mandarin this year! ^_^

Oh, I'm Malay. But yeah, I am taking up Chinese as a 3rd language in school. Many a times I wanted to quit because Hey! learning chinese is not easy with all the workload and such so yeah, I persevered for the sake of JAY (:

So since the starting of the year till now, I'd say I pretty much understand a bit of what he's singing. What attracted me the most was definitely his style cause before I really got into Jay, literally before listening to his songs, I've heard about the name 'Jay Chou' everywhere and he's really big. When my bro's friend brought over his disc by coincidence, I ripped it and started listening. WOW! And ever since I've been a loyal fan. Haha.

As a chinese my canto is decent but my mandarin is just fair. Taking some mandarin classes now; found that listening to music helps you me learn some new words. I don't think that knowing the language actually matters, as long as you can appreciate the music.

Language is a definite barrier if you're listening to songs in a tongue you're not familiar with, but there's the blessing of translations for the lyrics online, something you can find for nearly every song.

There are some Korean songs I like; I actually don't know the artists' names but I appreciate the music and I know what they mean after I find translations. It's the same with Jay, my Chinese is lacking but I still appreciate the music a lot.

i'm not chinese.. and before listening to jay.. i had a huge aversion to chinese music.. but then one of my friends made me listen to Silence [An Jing].. and it was beautiful..

then i went off on a leehom tangent.. because his songs are easier to learn.. and now i'm loving jay's music.. because his lyrics and accompaniments are amazing.. =)

he's quite talented, and jc.net's just one piece of evidence that he's loved worldwide ^^

like many of the other posts i dont speak, read, or understand much chinese so i read the lyrics and listen to the tone, mode, beat of the song. i am vietnamese and chinese but speak cantonese and only understand some words of mandarin (the ones that sound familiar in cantonese). so to sum it all up, i still enjoy his music even though i dont understand it.

I'm Chinese, but I don't understand a single word of Mandarin (I can understand Cantonese, though). I LOVE Jay's music despite not understanding any of it. I can always read translations online and while Vincent's lyrics are indeed very beautiful (the most beautiful lyrics of all, imo, are from "Love Before the Century"), I listen to Jay's music for his voice, his creative musical prowess, and the passion/energy he puts into everything he does.

Plus, some of his songs are just so damn fun! Ninja? General/Checkmate? Simple Love? Holy crap, they just make me want to get up and dance! I love his slow songs and ballads as well! I love it all. :)

I totally agree! I listen to a lot of Mandarin and Japanese music...I don't understand a word, but sometimes I prefer foreign (to me) music over English music. For example, I hate most American R&B (a few exceptions, of course), but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jay's R&B music.

I couldn't speak chinese or understand but i love Jay music.
I love the tune, rythm and emotional of song however i couldn't understand chinese language.
But music is universal language which tune and rythm can tell more about the emotion I think I can understand the song from music.
The lyric is made more understood so I try to understand the song from lyric that translate to english.
However It couldn't make me 100% understand but I happy and appreciated when listen to Jay's song.

I absolutely don't know Chinese, so I don't understand Jay's lylics.
The best I can do is to read the meaning in English by someone
who kindly translated them in the internet.

What I like in Jay's song is its music, the note, the chord.
His song makes me feel fun, feel sad or happy
although I don't know what the words mean.

Well, I think that if they actually took the time to listen to it, they'd like it .. however, to me, i think non-asian americans have a hard time accepting 'foreign' music. For example, let's just say i played nunchucks or something and showed it to someone that wasn't asian, they'd say it's 'wanna-be' rap. That's what they say abuot any 'rap' that's not by someone like Tupac, Ludacris, 50Cent or something.. They feel like nobody can top theirs just because it's something they haven't heard before.. they don't understand that there's a whole 'nother world out there that makes music just like they but w/ a diff language.. ah, but that's just what i think.. k. toodles
