No wonder our girls could not get the "Miss Universe Title" .
One of the main reasons why in recent years the Singapore Government has always ensured that their Miss Universe representative were of tertiary level education or higher was because of the following incident which occurred not too many years ago.
It is the final round of the Miss Universe Pageant and the 3 finalists, Miss USA, Miss Malaysia and Miss Singapore are being asked 3 simple questions:
MC: The first question is name me an electrical appliance starting with "L"
Miss USA: Lamp
Miss Malaysia: Light bulb
Miss Singapore: LADIO
Judge: No, no, Radio does not start with the letter "L"
MC: I am going to give you 3 more chances; Now, name me an animal
starting with the letter "L"
Miss USA: Lion
Miss Malaysia: Leopard
Miss Singapore: LABBIT
Judge: No, no, no!
MC: Your next chance. The name of a famous car that starts with "L"
Miss USA: Lexus
Miss Malaysia: Lamborghini
Miss Singapore: Lolls-Loyce
Judge: Oh my God!
MC: I am going to give you one last chance! Name me a fruit starting with the letter "L"
Miss USA: Lemon
Miss Malaysia: Lychee
Miss Singapore, with full of confidence, smiles and says: LIEWLIAN!!
This is not the end of the story, the Judge consulted the board of judges to determine if Miss Singapore should really disqualified;
and they decided that since Miss Singapore was having as many problems with the letter "L", they decided to give her another chance.
Judge: OK, the final question is name me a human anatomy starting
with the letter "L"
Miss USA: Lung (applause)
Miss Malaysia: Liver (even more applause)
Miss Singapore: LAN CIAU
The Judge fainted..!!!

Haha that's funny... I noticed the R thing with my mom -___- she can't pronounce R's that well.. it's like, whenever we're at Goldstein's bagel (i notice it the most there because it's WEIRD) I ask for her to order me cranberry bagels.. and she always goes, "Clanberry" and the guy working there has to ask her to repeat it like 3 times.

anyways that was pretty funny! I thought that was a serious question too hehe
oh it's the penis. hehe~ it's in hokkien.
ya i intially thought this was a serious topic n was abt to post some serious viewpts. haha~
niwae i think cos no one bothers abt the pegeant much so the quality of the contestants r average. n the questions they ask r real stupid... this was the one asked this yr:" when was the last time you cried?"- or something along this line. ha~ wat kinda question's this?

heh that was pretty funny. as everyone else, i thought this was gonna be a serious discussion. but has anyone notice that the questions just get dumber and dumber? i think this year it was the contestants who came up with the questions, not the judges. and who the heck were those judges...? to bring this to a more serious tone... i think they need more international representatives to sit as judges and more asians in order for places like s'pore to stand a chance.

yeah, i did think that it was going to be serious topic but ~ heyhey
but still, jokes aside, i believe that we singaporeans do maintain a certain standard of english!
anyway, the most important thing is that one must understand the importance of knowing when to drop the coffeeshop-english when conversing with another.

hmmm... actually I find the contestants we send out are not exactly the prettiest/brainiest among our people....
Just look at the last few 'miss singapore' erm... I can say that I know of people who are prettier than that and they are also packed with more brains... I think it's the whole society thing... the real cream of the crop may not want to go for these stuff (cos sometimes giving up their career, entry into mediacorp etc, which is part of the whole deal when you win) is not what they want...
In fact, I get really saddened at the contestants at each year's miss singapore finals... either they don't look good at all... else they have missing brains... Just listen to their shallow answers during QnA... (recall the use handphone for radiation answer 2 years back)... *cringe* Glenn and Rod used to poke fun at them during their morning show.. .and I say the contestants really did those silly things to 'deserve' the sacarstic remarks...
Perhaps we should have better contestants next time??
hahahaahahahahaahahaa...........hey gd one

LOL...
Actually i think usually the contestants are not good enough... I was quite dissapointed with the contestants a few times though... And I'm sure there are better people to join the contest... But some people just don't want to join the contest... I mean there's definitely some people in Singapore who can win it if they did participate... So it's just about not wanting to go into this kind of thing...
Lol.... I can remember myself when i was really young... I used to pronounce rabbit as "yabbit"... LOL...

Hey, hey, hey...... I may not be able to balance my breakfast on my boobs, but they are there okay! :bleh:
But frankly, those who are actually pretty and have brains, are too smart to join such a contest.... those who join, well.... guess that shows much about the little grey cells.... But to quote from Summer of My German Soldier the girl once said, "I think God spent so much time on her (mother's) outside, He forgotten about her insides (meaning her brain and heart....) "
I do think that is quite true..... If God spent so much time sculpturing the perfect looking woman with all the looks and curves, He probably did not have much time left to work on the insides.... I rather have a good brain, and a good heart, and be a plain Jane, then to have all my assets concentrated on my outsides.....
Just me...

eh... I felt that some of tem their "england" really caanot make it ah... You see... I am not saying that they need to speak with a certain accent or something... but they just simply not fluent... their sentences come out in chucks, and they mispronouce... I mean... few of the contestants can really speak... which is why people like jamie yeo can win....

actually it's not entirely our fault lar.....those judges are all angmos so naturally they prefer angmo women and think they prettier lor
hahaz... actually if its real, the judge cant say anything mah... hahaz... our own culture and style... tat might be quite unqiue... hahaz...

haha... good one!!! :D
but i think that e main reason is racism... it happened in a modelling competition tat i read about... the representatives from china and singapore were modelling odinary pinstripes suit when other angmoh countries were modelling outfits by Kenzo and those branded stufz...
my teacher says that e reason behind singapore never winning is bcos we,singapore, choose from jus a small city while other countries(Eg. USA) choose frm many cities so they get the best of the best of the best etc...
plus this year's Sandy Chua was not even pretty!! Just pleasant looking...
but i have to admit that she was the best of the finalists...

nice one....reminds mi of when I was small and I kept pronouncing Robot as Lobot..heheheand TV as Teewee and also when I was about 12 year ago, i accidentally pronounced the word "Rice" as "Lice" once when i was ordering chicken rice, and the person was going "HUH!", i was soo embarassed...
But down to a more serious tone. Alot of my frenz feel that the quality of Miss S'pore Girl nowadays has actually gone down. If we actually looked back at the winners of Miss S'pore about 10 years ago, I can say that the quality back then was 10 times better than it is now. Back den u can really say that the winner was really a combination of beauty and brains.
there could be a few reasons why we ain't getting the best of the best outta S'pore.
Those ladies who really pack the punch and pack the brains, don't see the need to join these type of contests. reason: might be a waste of time.
The judges. The standard of the judges changes from year to year. Some feel that A should win and some feel that B should and others feel that C should. And YES! Get professional People like top international models, famous talents scouts to be the judges. AS their point of view would be the closest to international standards. And also, since Singapore has the Asian Feel, most "Angmohs" will have the misconception of Asian, like chinese, to have foxy eyes or Phoenix eyes, seductive but charming looks.
I've been watching Miss Universe for many years and I've always felt that the stages lacked Asian themes where ladies from China, India, Malaysia, Singapore & Japan can really maximise and bring out the true essence of Asia to the judges, instead of always wearing revealing swim suits, night gowns etc etc, which has been a disadvantage to the asian contestants. But watching the show about 2-3 yrs back, I was quite glad that Miss China and Miss India was able to get into the Seim finals, out of a stage where it was mostly dominated by "angmohs".
