View Full Version : [SG Talk] Passengers Who Blast Their Music On Buses: Inconsiderate Fellow Commuters

I ususally take the bus in the morning to get to work. And as my bus trip takes more than 30 minutes, so usually, if I can get a seat, I would settle for a nice nap.

But recently, I am beginning to notice, that on these morning rides, there are these few hardcore 'music lovers' who can't wait to 'share' their music around. :rasp:

Like this morning, one passenger, who was sitting about 3 rows away from me, had his music turned on so loud, I could hear every word of the rock music that was blasting from his headphones. Be reminded that I am THREE rows away! Needless to say, not many people around that joker have much of a shut-eye.

On another occasion, I encountered this passenger, who loved listening to a certain song on her handphone, broadcasted loudly for the benefit of all the other bus passengers. The song was repeated on loop for no less than 10 times

Personally, I find them very inconsiderate, because, the loudness of their music is an 'earsore' to the people sitting around them. Walkman, discman, mp3 players, and other sorts of personal music player, are supposed to be used for the personal listening of the user. Also, I worry for the user, who had such a loud volume turn on right next to their ears, are they not worried about hearing loss? :worry:

I was just wondering, do you feel such actions are inconsiderate? Or it is just me?

Perhaps you should make the topic a little broader to cover all kinds of inconsiderate commuters. I'd have so much to complain about

But speaking of "noise pollution", who can blame these guys when SBStransit shows the best example when it comes to "sharing" with their TVmobiles. Okay, I agree that TV mobiles are somewhat entertainment, BUT I guess there's never really a win-win situation. We all have days when we just want our peace.

Yes, I think people who blast their music on public transport are really inconsiderate. I myself had experienced a few times. There was one time when I took a bus from Orchard to my home and there was this guy with the Nokia 3650, I think, blasting music and it was quite irritating. And there was another time, again in a bus, when another guy blast his music from his handphone to let he and his girlfriend listen. Really irritating to me!!!! Why not they share their earphones when they listen to music???? :?

And talking about TVMobile, it is really stupid for SBSTransit to install TVs in their buses. I mean, not even half of the passengers are watching it!!!! And it is really noisy!!! Luckily, the buses that I take everyday to school do not have TVMobile. Phew......

TVmoblie, haha. It's good enough for me to check the soccer match scorelines in the morning news only. It's pretty noisy too, as a matter of fact.

Back to the original topic, yeah definitely it does caused some uncomfort to other passengers if someone blast their music out loud. I'm not being racism or what, most of the time I encountered such situation, it's always the malays. :shifty: So dawn, what race is that idiot belong to?

And damnit to those who speak sooo loudly on phone converstation. As if like he/she want the whole world to know his/her converstation.

I think they are very inconsiderate too. Some of them really blast their music even when they are using earphones/headphones (which means it should only be personal entertainment and will not disturb others  ). Sometimes I wonder how come their eardrums can take it........

I also don't like those people who are trying out their ringing tones on public transport. Some of them just play one tone after another (as if they are trying to select the best tone), sometimes it's early in the morning. Don't they know that they are disturbing others?

Another group of people would be those playing games on their mobiles or using gameboys. They should switch off the volume when playing. Sometimes those sound effects are really irritating

Seriously, i think these ppl are kind of deaf or something. somehow they like to blast their music. at times i think it's jus because in the mrt or bus it's kinda noisy because of the sound made when the vehicle is moving. but some ppl simply have severe hearing problem whereby they really blast it very loudly which i can hear very clearly what they were listening too. jus so irritating but in the end, the one who suffer will be them not me since they are damaging their ears.

You are definitely not alone.
I can't stand those people who love blasting their music. It's like
they're trying to show off how loud their stereo can reach and they're
so darn proud of their music. It's so damn freaking irritating and
inconsiderate

I often come across those 乳臭味干 'young adults' who think the world of
themselves blasting noise [those are not considered music] from their
handphones. I have no idea how they can manage to withstand those
glares from unhappy passengers and even snide remarks from some.

It is their freedom to listen to whatever music they like in public,
but such freedom should not be violated/misused and cause
inconveniences to others. Geez, they should have their mobiles and
stereos confiscated and locked up.

First things first, do try not to use chinese in the forum. You can actually, just provide the translation in parenthesis beside it. Other people can visit this forum and most of them can't read chinese.

Anyway, which is why I highly recommend everyone to buy good earphones/headphones. Headphones with padding is best and they are not too crazily expensive either. A set of audio-technica headphones with funky design and foldable costs about 50 bucks and its really good. You can blast your music full volume and the person next to you can't hear a single note. Its really effective cos if you remove the headphones from your ear, you can't hear the music anymore. The noise reduction is THAT good. The flipside is you can't exactly hear things from OUTSIDE very well either. So road-crossing and stuff have to be done very carefully to prevent accidental cause of death or injury. Haha.

I am so glad I am not the only one feeling so irritated by the loud music. I don't see any particular race being the constant offenders, although I noticed those people with their earphones blasting music usually listen to Rock, Rap and Techno, with all the heavy drum beats and thumping.....

I remember distinctly hearing Eminem from the earphones of the fellow sitting behind me once. Yeah, I hear the lyrics clearly, the one where his was cursing his mom? I hear it thru that poor joker's earphones  I seriously think that joker has hearing loss.

Once though I heard QLX blasting from the joker sitting beside me. :glug: I am not sure to be proud or ashamed.

actually i do feel irritated at times when people blast their music
but i guess we have to understand because they are so used to listening their discman through the earphones,it will affect their hearing, causing them to on it even louder without knowing at times if they are disturbing others..
so i think we cant really blame them

I do get really irritated if a passenger blasts music when I want to take a nap on the bus. Seriously, I really don't understand how they can tolerate the loud music... don't their ears feel sore? Or do they think it's cool to let others hear what they're listening to? I don't get and never want to understand their mindset.

Another irritating passenger is those that ons their mobile ringtone super loud (and usually sound horrible too) and they literally shout into the speaker when they answer. It's the same as those who blast their music. I can understand if it's those old ah pek who has slight hearing deficiency and tends to shout loudly since they can't hear clearly and thinks everyone can't hear them too, but sometimes its this punk-wannabe that does this that makes me wanna slap him/her.

Anyway is TV Mobile on maintainence island wide? All the buses I seem to take don't have TV Mobile (which is good news btw)

smilepiggy

TVmobile is only on SBStransit buses. not on the SMRT buses.

I sometimes get irritated by those loud music too. hahas. i mean, LOUD music affects the hearing long term too you noe? and mos of the time its those techno-ise , rock music... that blasts in your ear.

but, guess its each one for himself? if they lik it, its hardly likely there's any way out?

Hmm...I'm also quite puzzled on why some people like to blast their headphones. It's too loud and I can't even take it!!!! I mean, why can people still blast their music right beside their ears??? Seriously, this type of people must check their ears for any hearing loss.

And yes, those talking into the phone very loudly are very irritating also!!!! Once I was in a bus and there was this lady talking very loudly into her phone!!! I can't really stand it!!! It was as if the bus was her home!!!

I guess almost all of us here and encountered such people. But I hadn't seen encounters whereby any of us approached them (not me) to ask them to lower their volumn. Hey, what if you were trying to catch a much needed nap after a tired day at school/work, and the person's music is irritating you to hell. Furthermore, the music almost always don't sound too good (with the sss ss sss ss zz zzz sound and mumblings). At least those who on it so loud that you can hear the lyrics being sang is still better than that!

hey j0ty... WHO hasn't encountered this problem... i was on the MRT the other day, and another guy... was blasting their music damn LOUD! Luckily... it was just for awhile... then he changed songs... it was 7LX... and i was like... OMG... where's my mp3?! Did i forget to bring iT?! HELP ME! But luckily... i've put it at home and that guy saved me. For getting out of Jay's Music... :bleh:

and ya, you guys are talking about TVMobile... my mum works at mediacorp... and she says that TVMoblie will be shut down in another 3-4 years?! (so, your ears will be saved!) Cause it ain't makin money for them at Mediacorp and that the commercials just don't pay enough money ... and btw... this is latest news: Channel U will also be shut down in another 3-4 years... there are too little shows to show..

Ok, this is a little off topic. I was wondering if the shutting down of tv mobile and ch u has been confirmed? But about TV mobile, i don't want it to be shut down! Sometimes it helps me get rid of boredom when i'm on the bus! As for ch u, it doesn't really make a difference to me if they shut down that channel. But before they shut it, i hope they'll air the taiwanese variety shows on ch 8 instead!!

I have experienced such inconsiderate people before. They blast their music loudly, and most of the time, the songs they blast are horrible songs!! Aargh.. I think they're aware that people are giving them the irritated look, but they just don't care..

I have to say, I carry my ipod with me ALL OVER THE PLACE so if I do encounter people with loud music blasting out of their earphones, I just listen to my own music. Ha.

I have to admit, what really pisses me off are commuter who carry out an sms conversation at 8am in the morning with their sms alert tone turned up to volume 5. I mean, for me, if I am having an sms chat, I'd actually turn it to a quieter mode so that people around me don't have to hear the constant LOUD alerts that come in every 5.6 seconds.

And of course, ringing tones that are on volume 5 are just as bad. And to top it all off, some bozo will have their phone on volume 5 but will have headphones on turned really loudly. This means that everyone else on the bus hears his irritating phone going off while he/she is oblivious to it.

hey i do find this bunch of people crap...but sad to say our pain is their pleasure

i'm someone who wish to be able to listen to only music whenever i'm bring my discman. seriously who dont? sometimes theres just too many vehicles and stupid noises and you really need to relax your ears to music hence no choice gotta bring the discman out. but then i guess some people just 'misuse' this form of 'relievement'....

i just pray that god will bless this people deaf someday :shifty:

ene haha maybe those bunch of people you mentioned have hearing problems? :D

I used to have my music loud, but of course it's not that loud that you can hear the voice, the music and all. At the most, you will hear soft "tum tum tum" and that's about it. Anyway, i cannot bring myself to turn up the volume to the max, because it's really deafening, and i am really afraid i might have severe hearing loss later on, so i tone down a lot nowadays.

Anyway, my experience of noise pollution was on the train. This guy was carrying his handphones (yup, you are not reading wrong, he has 2 handphones) and then it seems that the phones has been modified such that the ringing tones are so loud! I think it's way over the volume 5 thing. And then it's like every 30 seconds or so, you will hear one of the phones ringing "DI DI DI DI". It was so annoying that everyone on the train was staring at him. I don't know what he is doing, but seems to me that he is using one phone to sms the other.

Seriously in doubt, why do people love to tone up their mobile phones' message tone or ringtones? I mean it's still acceptable if it's only ring once, but continously ringing is a big no-no.

I guessed some fellow love attention, well unneccessary attention. I can't stand people that speak loudly on phone in public (regardless in mrt or buses, etc). Their voices sound discreet and sharp to my ears. Ohh, probably they want to let the rest of the world what his/her conversation all about!? :hmm:

macdawn
03-01-2005, 01:45 PM
It really boggles the mind how some people really love to share their conversation/music with the rest of the bus/MRT.

This morning, again I encounter one of those people who are really in love with their handphone ringtone, because when her phone rang, she just took it out and stared at the handphone listening to Ocean's "Ku Dan Bei Pan Qiu" until it got near the chorus, then she answered the call.

And, at the risk of offending a lot of people around me, I am getting really irritated by those handphones that can now play the mp3 as ringtones, because I am hearing the same few tunes again and again, usually played at the max volume....... help me!

03-02-2005, 07:26 AM
OMG, dawnie, I experienced that before too! And the ringtone is also 'Gu Dan Bei Ban Qiu'. Maybe its the same person eh? :hmm: Those handphones which can set mp3 as ringtones irritates me too. I mean there is certainly a rising trend of people who don't pick up thier calls until their ringtone are played a certain time. And I feel embarrased when the ringtone is one of Jay's song. But the Gu Dan Bei Ban Qiu one is slightly worst. Cause I have to hear Ocean's songs even when I am not watching televsion programmes!

This happened last week when I was in the LRT. There is this group of girls who thinks they are having some mini concert. I heard them sing SHE's Hou Niao, not that I don't like the song, but I really feel like telling them to stop singing. Its so irritating when they are singing so loudly and there is those parts where they stopped and sing again to 'perfect' the song. And I saw some other passengers staring at them too. I don't care if there are preparing for a competition or what, but people do need their rest. Thank god my LRT ride is only 10 mins.

Eunicezy OMG! Is that real!? Hahhaa.. I'm laughing my socks off! I have similar experience too, constantly hearing "Gu Dan Bei Ban Qiu" ringtone in mrt. *lol* I'm sure Ocean is that damn proud of that fellow.

Have you all experience someone sing Chinese New Year festive songs when queuing up to buy 4D? She was listening to her walkman, joined in the queue and started singing out loud. Every single one in the queue was taken off by it. The most hilarious part is that she try to sing this song in the most perfect manner (high pitch) with her eyes closed, and then she broke her pitch. Believe me, it become the joke of the day and I've a real hard time hiding my laughters. :D

kasic_fantasy
03-03-2005, 01:50 PM
omg...i got that Gu dan bei ban qiu thing too

i personally really dont like that song. in fact any song from Ocean just simply irritates me. now with those people...i hate that song like hell now

FuKaKyOn hmm i never experience that when i pass by the 4D stores. but then i remembered once that when i was taking mrt with my friends theres this idiotic woman (she looks like shes not a singaporean) who just keep playing the 'happy birthday' tune with her handphone over and over again..

it was peak hour and i looked around...many stressed up adults got even more annoyed. they just want to rest and now with this happy birthday thing...man :worry:

but the funny part is as this woman is using an old model from nokia, it was monopoly tone. damn high pitch and super destructive for the ear when had too much...a guy whose handphone model is panasonic x70( :excited: ) took out his phone and actually played the happy birthday song in polyphonic!!! :lolabove:

sad to say...the woman still continued

Well.. here is one incident that happened to me today...
i was on my way from my school back home (abt 1 hr) and this person got up the bus after me and sat behind me... i was wearing my big hearphones (i dun think i was sharing the music with other people though...) and suddenly, this person started singing out loud in the bus! I was like 'oh my god must he share his music in this way?' Anyway, i didn't say anything and continued the journey... then he started getting real 'excited' that he stomped his feet against the floor of the bus and knocking into my seat occassionally... finally the guy besides me got irritated and got up and went to another seat... after a while, the person (the one singing for the whole bus) finally moved to the other side of the bus... and it was then i realised he was as old as my dad (At least 40 year)! My god! can't these people be a little more considerate? Anyway, i kinda blasted my music to keep his singing out and i finally fell asleep.. when i woke up, he was apparently still singing... so i got stuck with this 'singing' man for about 1.5 hrs.... i was glad that i had this sudden urge to bring my headphones today...

I've experienced that too.

I suppose it would be okay if the music that they blast is NICE. But different people have different tastes, I can't stand those very noisy ones like heavy rock etc, especially early in the morning when I'm going to school.

The worse thing is, they play the music in their earphones attached to their ears, and we can hear the music itself in the surroundings!! These people have to spare a thought for their ears, if not for us.

eunicezy
03-08-2005, 05:42 PM
Yup, Sean. That's real! A truly horrible bus experience for me. But I am so glad that I never saw them again. Cause I was trying so hard to stifle my laughter when they go 'off key'.

petricia, the guy in your bus ride doesn't sound normal to me. Singing aloud plus stomping of the feet? :glug:

:lolabove: I wonder if I will see anyone singing and dancing in one of my MRT rides.

i hav a confession though..

so i usually like to play my mp3 player very loud.. but not until others can hear la...
it's loud until u cant hear ur phone ringin.. u guys knw what i tryin to say?? :brows:
YES... i'm one of those who lets the phone rings until long long..
but not on purpose.. but it's cuz it got no vibration and i didn't hear it..

I saw someone dancing in a bus!!! That was several years ago when I was in Primary 1 or 2. This guy was wearing a big headphone. I did not notice him until he was heading for the exit where I was sitting next to and his whole body was shaking to and fro!!! I thought he was acting cool and he doesn't seem to know that he was dancing right in the bus!!! My mum and I were laughing but other people doesn't seem to notice him. Yeah, maybe that could be annoying for some of us. Just sharing one of my experiences.

06-02-2005, 10:24 AM
tangwk1990 , that a hillarious incident. Dancing in the bus? Omg! Haha, probably he's getting too high with his music. Hahas.

Yah, agree, many people are on-ing their music too loudly. But I think it's because the song of those rock music is too loud for the listener to heard the lyric so they need to on it real loud. That's what I think. But it IS irritating. I hates phones with Mp3 ringtone. It's so noisy and it's like not so clear. And there's some "zzz-ing" sounds, making it so irritating. I think polyphonic tunes are best. Opps, off topic. Hahas.

For me it will depends on the songs which the person is listening too.
If he/she is listening to songs that I enjoys then it is ok cos I can listen to the songs too. Heehee.. :D
But if he/she is listening to some songs that I don’t know then I will find it irritating  …

Ring tones is another issue. As some of you had mentioned, there are people who just take out their ringing phone and stare at it for (I don’t know what for :-x ). I hate it! :rasp: Especially when I’m having a headache or on my way on home. I just want a quiet journey home.

Arrgh...these people who blast music on public transports are really irritating...=_= Once I was in the bus and I saw this teenage boy blasting his music with his phone on the bus and it was really annoying!!!

The ringtones also irritates me. Especially the mp3 ringtones, in which the sound quality isn't really goos for most phones. There was this guy sitting in front of me and every SMS he received, I just can't stand that sound!!! ><

Well, better to switch the phone to silent mode on public transport....

Sigh.... recently, I am beginning to think that there is a group of people who are out to irritate me on purpose. Otherwise, how can I explain why I keep encountering at least one such music blasters when I am on a bus that travels along the expressways. As you know, such buese are the best kind to sleep in

Until one fellow board the bus with their music on so loud, you fear for the fellow whom they chose to sit beside. In addition to loud music blasters, I also encounter people who just love the sound of their voice, talking loudly on their handphone or their friend throughout the whole bus trip.

I was forced to sit through a whole 40 mins of this joker, standing right beside me, talking to her friend, telling her friend (and everyone else on the bus) when she is going on leave, why she's going on leave, what she intended to do on her day off (watch taiwanese soap opera......) and where she wants to go if she had the money. I can't even think in peace, forced to listen to her tales :bigyuck:

On and on she went. By then, I don't blame the person sitting behind me for blasting his earphones, because I had mine louder than normal too. But there was no way I could drown that yakking voice out without risking any permenant hearing damage.

Hai, I also have one quite similar experience too.
I was on my way to work, in the bus I manage to find a seat to sit down. Then there was this group of guys which I think from china, and one of them sit beside me, others sit around me. Then they start talking, loud. As if they wanna the whole bus to heard their conversation too! Then the guy who sits beside mi start to take out his hp, then begin to listen song with it. I still remember its Lim jun jie's Dou jiang you tiao. Its ok for me, since I like Jj songs too, but the irriating part has yet to come.

The guy actually sings along! OH MY GOD, you should have heard it! I almost want to hammer him for destroying such beatiful song! Luciky my stop reach pretty fast, or else I dunno what would happen to my ears!

Yesterday on the bus, there were 3 teenagers blasting Li Sheng Jie’s songs. They were sitting at the back of the bus and the bus is rather empty.
Initially, I was ok with it since I like his songs too. But the sound quality is terrible. AND one of them started singing along with it. Luckily his singing weren’t too terrible (unlike Moku’s experience). I found it funny and couldn’t stop myself from smiling at their antics.

I mean, its actually ok for me too, if you really can sing well.

Imagine... :glug:

If someone, at first listened to Jay's Huo Yuan Chia song... and then after that every time the song comes to that part where Jay sings with a high-pitched tone (the "xiao cheng li sui yue liu guo qu..." one), he started singing along with awkward voice and not a high-pitched tone but only-he-knows-what-pitch-he-is-singing tone for goodness sake...

You'd really really want to smack him down to the floor and smash him outta the window... Huo Yuan Chia style :bang:

There is this time when a gal listens to her songs and is so engrossed in it! She is standing and dancing to the song non-stop! The whole bus's passengers were staring at her but she dont even care. She sang and danced to the music. Dance as in really dance with hand and feet movements. I cant believe it too. The whole journey, everyone was entertained and i bet nobody fell asleep.

Hahahaha, that will be fun to watch. Better than the mobile TV in the buses. Just make sure that you don't smack anyone while dancing...

something like this happend to me on the shuttle to work...

there was this guy who had earphones already...was also singing along to whatever he was listening...people inside the van were already eyeing him but he still ignored us...anyway, i tapped him on the shoulder and said, "man you have earphones already can you at least lower the volume or tone down your singing" ..and he replied (loudly), "whaat?"..." i said turn your volume down"...no okay or thanks from that guy.....grrr...some people just are so inconsiderate....
