Chinese Artists: Who's overrated?? Who's underrated??

correct me if i'm wrong but i havent seen a thread with this topic yet. it's a very interesting subject and i'm just wondering what others would say.

underrated: Tension, A-Do, Liang Jin Ru, William Pan

overrated: Andy Lau, F4, Nic Tse, Sammi Cheng, Kelly Chen , Stef Sun , Valen Hsu, Faye Wong, Jolin, Jay Chou

please understand that this is only an opinion. thinking someone is overrated doesnt mean that i dislike them, by all means i still listen to the good songs they put out. i just think they get too much credit or attention for their "not-so-obvious" talents. plz don't flame me for this, peace :angel:

overrated: Yes, Jolin needless to say. Elva Xiao, she sings as though she is having a cold.

i agree with all the names you listed under overrated! same with underrated too. there are SO many artists that are super talented and have great songs but just don't get enough attention.

* F4: coz they can't sing and they're not as good looking as ppl make them out to be.
* nic tse: too reliant on the "image" thing to stand out....well, he stands out that's 4 sure but 4 the wrong reasons. i don't think he's that good a musician as he's made to look.
* twins: again, can't sing, should stop acting 12...basically so popular in hk coz they're "cute".
* edison: can't be bothered to repeat myself....same as most of the above.

* hacken lee: he's such a talented singer and has been in the music industry for so long! only in the past year and a half has his talents been recognised as he deserves.
* Lee hom: again, another talented musician, singer, composer and song writer whom i'd like to see get the same amount of attention and love as Jay does.

well my friend who listens to a ton of chinese music and watch a ton of chinese movies says that Edisen is way better as a singer than an actor. Plus she mentions that when she sings in mandarin he doesn't sing it proper enough. Like it's not fluent enough, but hey he's getting better according to her[she speaks chinese and she is chinese! hehe]. Do u guys agree? haha, wellz...he's hot! acording to her too! :]

Under rated... Hins Cheung (maybe because hes only started out, and Im in UK, so I dunno about HK) and Denise Ho, shes actually really good. I love the sound of guitars.

1. Nic Tse & Edison Chen
I have to say that they rely too much on theirs handsome look than their talents. Sorry, no offense to all their fans.
2. F4
Eventhough I love all of them, but I agree that they're not that talented to deserve all of the credits that they get. It's just their looks, no one can resist such handsome faces. Not even me. :oops:
3. Cecilia Cheung
If she can't sing, don't even bother to. The first time I heard her singing life, I went crazy and it's hard to believe that she actually has an album. She should just stick in her acting to disclose her pretty face, and that's all. No singing, pleaaasee. :dry:
4. Twins
And here we go again. Two pretty faces with no ability to sing live. :dry: Gosh... they're even worse than F4's ZaiZai and Ken. I saw them singin' live in HK 2002 Jade Award.... and I just have to snort when I heard them sing. Can't believe that they are THAT famous.
5. Jolin
Don't need to say more. Her voice is okay, but that's all. There's no extraordinary thing about her that could grab all the attention that she gets. She's not even that pretty or that hot to me to get all guys' attention. So, I think she's a overrated too.
6. Stef Sun
I heard so many great things about her albums, but when I hear her songs, It was quite a dissappointment. It's not as great as everybody says. :dry:
7. Jay Chou

But I do admit that people look up to his talents too much as if he's the most latented musician in Asia. I have to agree that Jay is a music genius, but that doesn't mean that anything that he touch are going to be extravaganza. Sometimes Jay do create simple music that's good but not THAT extraordinary, but since all of his fans are fanatics, they always say every song Jay created is perfect. Sometimes I have to admit that some of Jay's songs are not THAT great. It's good, but it's not THAT good, you know. It's just a bit too overrated. But, I STILL LOVE HIM AND SUPPORT HIM. I just want to be fair in the judging. :wink2:

Underrated:
1. A-Do.
This guy is a great singer and good songwriter, but his name is not that HOT compared to Nic Tse, or Edison. But anyway... I think A-Do deserve more credit than that.
2. Joey Yung.
She's a very talented singer, and she has that golden voice. Too bad, not many people goes gaga over her because she's not as pretty as Twins/Cecilia, and she doesn't have this anorexic aka so-called standard figure for female singers.
3. Hacken Lee.
Such a great singer, but such a low exposure. And probably because he's not that handsome, and he's not that young anymore. Too bad.
4. Hins Cheung
He's a talented guy, but he's still new and young. Not many people pay attention to him yet. But I surely will pay attention to this guy becuase I'm sure he has potential. He somehow reminds me of somone I know and love. :wink2:
5. Penny Dai
Another great singer and songwriter too, but don't get all the attention she deserves mainly because she doesn't have that pretty face. Too bad. She's actually great.

It's ok. I would put it in people expect too much from him, so they look up to his talents too much.Everyone has their rights of voicing out their opinions. I wouldn't kill you for that. :bleh:

Yes, that's kinda true.......not all his compositions are the "best" and "superb"...........take Indian Old Bird for example

But I think i have now used Jay's musical talents and judged them with other artists........and I now think they are bad and crap ..........not 2 good

Cecilia Cheung in her acting is OK....but singin' is down the drain.........she has those "ngor gong how" like realli croacky voices........i dun know how she managed to get into singin'................but nowadays everybody is those "sam sin :dry: (3 lines - singin', movies, TV)" ppl

I understand what you mean. From other peoples point of view...Jays not that great. From the words of a friend, "Hes ugly, cant dance and he sings too high or too low." But because were fans, we seem to forget all that and just remember the good things...his music, personality, how nice he is to his mum, his charitable side etc. So its debatable really. To others, hes over-rated, to us, hes great! Hehe...

Totally deserves to be more famous than she is: Cheer Chen Qi Zhen. Ever heard of her? No?? that shows how underrated she is! She writes all her own songs and plays all the instruments on her albums!! Her songs are really nice, folksy type songs... great to listen to on lazy summer afternoons :icecream:

Overrated: I agree with most of the choices except Stef Sun... I still think she has a lot of talent but it's just that the songs that she's been given lately have been sounding the same... she needs someone to give her a new and fresh sound... she needs to work with JAY! :yeah:

I can't even get started on 5566... just what is their appeal?? they can't sing nor act and they don't even look good! and i thik they have enormous egos... they use the entertainment news that two of them hosts for shameless self-promotion!

Other overrated singers: SHE (not bad at hosting... just no more singing, please!!) ; Z Chen ( overhyped and boring... just seems like he ripped off David Tao's songs and singing style... )

Sure, he's regarded as one of the best in his competition atm, but compared to all the other Chinese artists out there, he IS among the top talent. Sun Yanzi > she writes her own music and I don't hear much of her in entertainment news so...
Zhang Zi Chen > smooth voice, very R&B-ish...
JJ Lin > Good vocals and very talented. His ballads are so good.

like what xiaoli said, he isn't overated in the sense that he does deserve the attention he gets coz he has achieved something substantial, and that differentiates between him and ppl like edison and F4. have they achieved anything significant that others cannot achieve? everybody can dance around on the stage, grow long hair, wear trendy clothes with matching shoes and whatever, but not everybody is capable of doing what J has done.
but having said that, i think ppl (fans, media, etc) go goo-goo gaa-gaa and wow! at the things J does coz they expect so much from him. in a sense, it creates more pressure on him coz he's held in such high esteem. so it's not really overating him, it's just expecting a more higher standard from him coz we know he's capable.

actually, even tho i'm an obsessed fan, i do not like all his songs. take william's castle for example. i don't like it coz i don't get it, so i don't listen to it. :happy:

Notice that most of the overrated are coming from HK. Seriously.... its sucha pitty that the new generation of cantonese pop has gone down the drain.

Underrated:

Chris Yu (Yu Hung Ming) : He writes his own songs, he writes songs for other ppl, and he is very vocally talented too. Not much ppl seem to know him unless they listen to alot of taiwan music. My third favorite under Jay Chou, and David Tao. Pitty.. not much ppl know about him.

Landy Wen : Even Jay cant boost her popularity up. Alot of ppl KNOW who she is... which is the girl who sang WU DING, but thats about it unless your a fan of hers, or a fan of Jay. Shes no where close to A-mei, elva, stef, jolin

Shunza - She is popular.... but not as popular as she deserves to be. Seriosuly... i think she is the only one that comes close to A-Mei or Coco Lee, in singging talent.

Tension: A group that can actually sing, and dance properly.

Tanya Chai : writes her own songs, has her own style... just awsome

OVERRATED :

Aside from all that garbage everyone else has listed.

S.H.E - They beat the competition... but seriously... what competition...? Twins?? They are better then the rest, but the rest is pretty hard not to beat. SHE is good.. but not that great

Kelly Chan : ahhhhhhhhhhh that irritating voice...

Sammi Cheung : Her songs require no skill... yet she is the top female artist in HK

Candy Lo : you can say she has her own style... but her vocal talent is really crappy... if i was a girl.. i could prob. sing better then that with a sore throat

Eason Chan : Hes supposed to be the next singging god, but seriosuly.. his songs are not that hard to sing. Hes good.. but that good. Plus..all his songs sound quite similar apart from his wacky wierd funky fast songs.

A-Mei Cheung : she probably does derserve her popularity, cuz i must say that her vocals are crazy ! Even Coco Lee, or Shunza can't beat her. But lets face it... her fast songs suck crap. Shes supposed to be all super picky, when selecting her songs, and if she DOES pick your song.... thats supposedly an honour.... her last album was pretty bad.... havent heard the new one yet...

definitely F4. i can't see behind all the hype, since they're not the best looking around, and not all of them can sing anyway.

Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok. just because they were popular back then doesn't mean that they deserve all the 'singing credits'.

Coco Lee. After 'Before I Fall in Love', people just expected her to go through the roof with 'raw talent'. but i think just the opposite. she's not that good.

TWINS. enough said.

Underrated:

Tension, possibly the only really talented boyband around today.

Penny Dai. amazing singer/songwriter. i dont get why people turn to Twins or Cookies.

I wonder whether you would define overrated as too popular or recognised as being talented when he/she is actually not.. i mean no one really ever praises F4 as being good at singing or acting but they are very popular.. in that sense they are not overrated in terms of talent.. it's just that they are very popular despite their lack of talent..

i think one very talented person whom has not been recognised enough is penny dai.. her songs are awesome and considering she writes everything including the lyrics show that she is good..

i don't think jay is overrated.. i think he deserves to be called talented and respected.. cos he is talented!! :love: granted, there may be someone out there who is more talented than him afterall.. yi shan hai you yi shan gao ( which means no matter how high the moountain there is bound to be a higher one) but i still believe he deserves his success today and i think he can scale even greater heights in the music world.. :)

I wonder whether you would define overrated as too popular or recognised as being talented when he/she is actually not.. i mean no one really ever praises F4 as being good at singing or acting but they are very popular.. in that sense they are not overrated in terms of talent.. it's just that they are very popular despite their lack of talent..

hEY, SO many of you guys opposing me for putting Jay in the over rated one. Well, This overrating idea came when I heard how wonderful his Bai Se Yu Mao song, even the magazine stated "Once again Jay's composing talents had been proven legitimate when I heard his Bai Se Yu Mao." And when I heard that song, I was like... Hm... disappointed. :dry:

I don't think Lee Hom is underrated. He compose his own songs, he plays instruments and he's cute, anyone knows that. But his songs..... are just..... weird. Sorry, I just can't seem to like any of his songs. And don't like his voice too. His voice is like a voice of a fat guy singing. :oops:

yea i don't think lee hom is underrated either.. this is a personal opinion but i don't really like him.. sure he composes his own music but his songs just aren't nice both in terms of the tune and his voice.. also i think his music does not have a creative element in it.. it sounds the same as any other song on the radio.. i feel he's too technical in his compositions.. i agree he works hard and is rather good looking.. but compared to jay.. he's really not half as good..

I'd probably quote everyone of you, but this one stuck to me because it just dawn on me that the comment you made about Juno, I'm seriously thinking that he got best new artist because of blackmailing. If anyone have heard, EEG entertainment's manager? and some of the artists such as Joey yUng, Twins, Boyz, and Juno are accused of BRIBERY (my bad, its bribery not blackmailing :laughing: ) to win award. I think this is very recent on the entertainment news. Anyways, besides that, I noticed most of the artists that people put as "overrated" are in the music company EEG, such as Nic, Edison, Twins, etc.. So maybe the music companys have a role on these artists being overrated.

Tension - I think they're WAY better than all those other Taiwanese boybands (5566, F4, etc.)...they can actually sing and dance! And their songs are ACTUALLY good to listen to!
Fan Wei Qi - She's got a really nice, soft voice...don't know why she's not more popular...
Edmond Leung - He's getting a lil old, but STILL..amazing voice, true talent...
Juno Mak - Everybody hates him because he looks ugly and he has a rich dad, but if you think about it, he's got a good/okay voice and he can dance better than lots of other HK singers. So I support him!
Jasmine Liang - She's got ONE heck of a voice....I don't know if she's underrated..but I don't hear too much about her, maybe cause she's Malaysian...

Cecilia Cheung - I absolutely HATE HER...she can't sing and she has absolutely no respect and talent for music AT ALL...her acting? It's alright, but not anything outstanding. PLUS she needs to EAT...
Faye Wong - I don't like her either...she thinks she's some hot-shot DIVA..she DOES have a nice voice (very versatile), but she could seriously use a personality check...
S.H.E. - Umm...well...I just don't think they're THAT great....

Tension: Personally, they're a reall good band. They really showed a great deal of improvement over their first album and their second album was great, I really enjoyed listening to them but they just don't seem to stand out to the public.

S.H.E.: I personally think that they're underrated. When I first got into pop I didn't really know them but the popular names stood out at me regardless of whether I listened to their music or not. They have really good songs with good lyrics.

Hins Cheung: Great singer with lots of good debuts and writes his own songs. If he continues this he'll be very good.

Overrated

Kelly Chen: I personally think their music/looks is horrible. I don't know why everyone likes her, but sorry, she doesn't catch my eye and she's hurting my ears everytime I liste to her music.

F4: Some good songs but the majority aren't that great. Too many reason listed above.

Jay Chou: Yes he's overrated, when I didn't even know about c-pop, he was the only person I listened to. The reason he's good is because he fullfills people's expectations with great music. He also has a very nice side of him.

Don't throw anything at me first. I have to tell this to you guys. I LOVE JAY CHOU WITH ALL OF MY HEART. But I do admit that people look up to his talents too much as if he's the most latented musician in Asia. I have to agree that Jay is a music genius, but that doesn't mean that anything that he touch are going to be extravaganza. Sometimes Jay do create simple music that's good but not THAT extraordinary, but since all of his fans are fanatics, they always say every song Jay created is perfect. Sometimes I have to admit that some of Jay's songs are not THAT great. It's good, but it's not THAT good, you know. It's just a bit too overrated. But, I STILL LOVE HIM AND SUPPORT HIM. Totally agree with these two Melvin....I don't care what he (David) call Jay (I'm kinda mad too :dry: ), but I think some people don't appreciate his music.

And for Jay I really have to say more on this. Although he's famous and all and we all love him, but one of my friend ask why he get so famous...I feel like beating her up or something :bonk: . I know that some people might not like him, but they're a LOT of people who LOVE HIM!!! It's really sucks how people judge him on his looks and judge him for singing rap. I Really feel like killing and chopping :chair: those stupid people who not only don't appreciate him (wel I'm okay with that, but I really hate it when they come and disrespect him just cause they don't like him...well hey I do.)

Overrated:
Twins- I do listen to them and don't really hate them, but people's attention on them is too MUCH. It's really getting out of hand.
Jolin - Here's another one who get famous because of her looks.....I don't think she could sing good either...She sings like she's having a running nose....
Edison Chen - seriously I don't really like him that much, but he does look good when he's not singing....

Ok let's not take this too personal....it's just my opinion.

tension:good voice,talented but not appreciated by people

frankling speaking,chinese music industry is going down hill. artists are treating albums like some sort of publicity where if they take out more,they will get more publicity.sadly to say,there are only a few in this industry that are worthy of being called "musician" .
