starting a thread on her, since i didnt see one

she's the reason i got into the whole Asian music scene 6-7 years ago after watching the jap drama "Virgin Road" with her theme song: Namie Amuro - Can You Celebrate?

i don't know much about her. only that she started out as the lead singer in the band "Super Monkeys" and split from them to pursue her own solo career. (the remaining members of Super Monkeys eventually formed their own group known as MAX) Later she married a dancer named Sam, had a baby, and since has divorced. her career took a downfall from there giving room for rising artists, then, such as ayumi and utada to take over.

she's coming out with a new single in a few days titled "Put 'Em Up". since her popularity downfall she has worked on various projects for a comeback, one being her Suite Chic albums.

anyone know anything else about her? any fans out there?

i've only one song from her ,'Think of Me' and it's one of the few japanese songs i have. it's my favourite song ..
i don't like her other fast songs that much.

That's me, a fan of hers!! :happy: I had avatars of her but not now since the games are going on.. ^^;

anyway been listening to her music since 1997. Though she had "broke off" with Komuro Tetsuya (her producer in her early days), she still produce good songs as in Japanese R&B.

I thought "think of me" was the worst song she had. -__-;; Dreaming I was dreaming was kinda the same style which is better or Wishing on the same star.

Sorry...who is she? I only know those Jap singers/group in chinese name.

After reading hisashi's post..I tried to figure out who is she...and I didn't pay attention on her avatar.(sorry hisashi )

Let me guess..is she "An shi nai mei hui'? (Mandrin name)

Hmm.. Namie Amuro . .she used to be big in Japan right? .. I think she was very popular all over Asia with her songs like "can u celebrate" etc .. but she got pregnant right? and she took a break.. now she's doing a comeback and she's collaborating with japanese rappers ... coz ive seen this mv from her suite chic album where she's try ing to act like JLo or something ..dancing in the clubs with rappers all around her ...

Actually I only love 1 song of hers.. and that is "Can U Celebrate". But I really like her though. She just has this kind of charm. I think she's a good singer too, just that her songs mostly not what I like.

The guy in Namie Amuro's song is Verbal, he is the producer for Heartsdales, part of M-flo, main mastermind behind Namie Amuro's "Suite Chic" project~ He's good, isn't it?

I always like Namie Amuro's songs, they are very good...Personal favorite songs from her are "Dreaming i was dreaming", "Chase the Chance", "Think of Me", "Wishing on the same star" and many many more~

I thought Suite Chic was a group of two girls.. did Namie Amuro produce it or is she actually in the group?

I've heard OF Namie Amuro, but I've never really listened to her songs or paid much attention to her music.

Her rendition of Itsuka no Merry Christmas with Gackt was unimpressive, at least to me. After hearing her sing in that, I was never really motivated to find out more about her.

I should go download a couple songs just to know her a little better. ^^;;

Gah.. I can't stand...hehe.. gotta put up her avatar..
anyway, she may not be as popular as before but I agree that she is a good singer! :) though her songs maybe americanised.

linny> Her duet with Gackt is not good? I think she is nervous and shy to sing in front of everyone with Gackt. But I must say that she tends to forget her lyrics easily just like Jay! ^^;

She is in this Suite Chic grp where she is the main vocalist and there are rappers and producers in the Japanese R&B/hip hop industry who produces the songs.

namie amuro is the reason why i started listening to japanese music way back then. i think the first song i heard was can you celebrate? i think she sings a lot better now and she tends to sing more r&b. i especially like the song did u... i believe she wrote the lyrics for that one.

did anyone see that performance she did i think a year ago where she was singing "wishing on the same star" live and forgot the words?? ohhh... that was bad.
i have it somewhere...if anyone wants to watch it let me know and i'll go find it.

Yeah. Dunno what happened to her. She's human afterall. But this is the first time I have seen her like this when she forgot her lyrics.

i prefer her to ayumi (no pun intended) and i think she's really pretty, but this is where it stops.

Where's the pun?

I think she sings better than Hamasaki but Hamasaki has more style. I think Amuro's personality is on the boring side. She doesn't really say anything interesting on the shows. She is more into hip hop than Hamasaki or Utada, but she looks awkward doing the entire hip hop R&B thing. She's not that great of a dancer and she doesn't have the Hip Hop attitude.

Basically, her life got ruined by Sam. Sam used to choreograph BoA's dance routines, by the way. He did Amazing Kiss.

Comparing Ayu, Utada Hikaru and Amuro Namie, Ayu comes out on top in talent. The girl is amazing... she just has such an image, such an influence, and such a kick for writing lyrics... just an inventive style. But Amuro Namie was the original Jpop queen. She's an amazing concert performer. I would rather see her concert than the other two anyday. Ayu has production skills, but she doesn't have the thrill or energy that Amuro does... And many of Amuro Namie's songs are just classic, even if they are pure pop, that's what she was known for and they are great. Nowadays her music doesn't have the same flair because music has changed, but I think she is overlooked too much. Most people see her now as a faded popstar...

Namie Amuro is my fave Japanese singer I have to say. I don't know much about Jpop but I really like her style and songs. Wishing on the same star was the one that attracted me.. Then came Uh-Uh.. That song was da BOMB!! I just love that hip hop style of hers and she's really cute and pretty too. I saw her old MV's also and I think her voice sounds really cool. She looks awfully cute in Put Em Up too but the song isnt that catchy like Uh Uh..I used to dislike Ayu I think it was because of her voice. It gets sooo squeaky. But know I've changed my mind. Ayu is really cool and also creative. Gosh! and cute too... Utada's also good. She's the one that I really respect. She's so young yet talented and successful.. *thumbs up to all 3 of em*

i only started listening to her when the best singles album came out, and loved it. i don't like her older dancier stuff, but her 2 recent clips are too american R&B/hip hop for me, i.e. too little clothes, too much sex appeal. she's got a good voice, and her music is good but if ppl think of her as "faded" then i guess they're using to get ppl back into her. i particularly like never end, did u and wishing on the same star.

did anyone see that performance she did i think a year ago where she was singing "wishing on the same star" live and forgot the words?? ohhh... that was bad.

Ahah! I love her!

It's just an obsession really... I don't think she sings exceptionally well though I enjoy her songs.
I find her style very attractive, she's beautiful and looks good in everything! She dances with an edge... well, she is my absolute favourite Jpop female singer!
Thing is, I haven't been keeping up with Jpop that much now, but from the MVs I see on MTV, she's still the most attractive female in Japan!

And part of her appeal to me probably lies in the fact that she was THE Queen of Jpop when I was into Jpop and I loved her then. So I guess she will always stand as an unshakeable figure to me, when it comes to Jpop. She's just special to me in that sense and no Ayu can measure up to that.

Oh yeah... I like the way she moves... *think: Something about the Kiss MV*

too much sex appeal..... pls get yr facts right...before u make a comment on it

i'm not sure what you mean....what facts? i've seen and heard her recent songs and clips, i like some of her music but think she depends too much on sex appeal in her clips. i know the majority of pop and RnB artists do, but i think she has more musical talent than them and so i don't think she (or her management or whatever) needs to use her sexiness to attract ppl to her music.

lol, or maybe i'm just a prude

i feel that ur comments to loko are unnecessary...get your facts right, ayumi is the queen of jpop, u can argue otherwise, but who will agree? not saying i dun like namie, i really like her new style but still, she is nowhere near as famous and popular as ayumi, and i highly doubt she ever will

powerlessangel
02-24-2004, 09:18 AM
yes, i do agree that in terms of sales of albums, ayumi is way over the top.....and namie may not ever reach that level again. But you are going have to know that namie was the first jpop singer that ever had recognization and fame in asia. not only in japan.she created a demand for jpop and i daresay that she was the reason why people are hooked on to jpop.... i like ayumi, she has the x factor, the songs.....but the success she had, namie did it even earlier than her......in other words, namie had done already what ayumi has done and is doing...you may not agree..that is okay.........these are the facts which stays on...that is why i say she is still the queen of jpop...it isn't always about the sales or how much money a celebrity makes......it is the impact that the person had made in this world that stays on......for example: madonna:her album's sales have extremely decreased over the years but she is still known as the queen of pop....why...simple, she made an impact.michael jackson may not be what he was but he is still known as the "god"...why. u ought to know why

Ioko- i don't agree that her recent clips are too sexy....in contrast to ayumi hamasaki, she is nowwhere too sexy....perhaps she may show her underwear a little bit or wear miniskirt but other than that, i do not see anything wrong with herclothing...she is in fine line between showing little and showing too much......sex appeal doesn;t sell,ioko....britney spears for example, look at her..too much sex appeal and look what happen to her album sales......

JianDan[Ai]
02-24-2004, 09:43 AM
i know namie came first, but who made the bigger impact? who will people remember more in the future? i dun wanna argue, just what u just said kinda argued for ayumi as the queen of jpop =P

i personally think that namie recent mvs are extremely 'sexy'...not that i am one to complain :shifty: but i think loko may be comparing them to namie's older mvs where she was rather conservative. Ayumi's are necessary as 'sexy' as there is less dancing, and she usually does wear extremely revealing clothing. Sex appeal wise, Namie has a lot more. But i dont think its incedent exposure, britney on the other hand -______-;; yuck ...enough is enough

loko
02-29-2004, 03:27 AM
as JianDan[Ai] said, yes i was comparing namie's older image/vids to her more recent ones, specifically Put em up and So Crazy. I've only seen one ayumi clip (i think dearest?) so i can't compare them in terms of sex appeal.

in relation to sex appeal selling records, i would say yes it helps, directly or indirectly, otherwise why would so many pop singers try to be sexy constantly? obviously records sales don't rely on sex appeal alone, but britney, christina, ayumi, beyonce, madonna - they're some of the biggest names in the music industry and how often has their image description not included the word "sexy" or "revealing" or sth similar?

with namie, i have a similar opinion to her newer image as many ppl have with the new jewel - they had success before with their initial more conservative images, but now after the huge wave of sexy pop princesses who are breaking sales records, they too are turning to sex appeal to gain more exposure. that's my opinion anyways, you don't have to agree.

*side note my username is loko, not ioko.

sorry for the late reply...kind of busy with my homework.....anyway back to the topic... jian Dan, i don't think you get what i was getting on ......what i was trying to say was that namie made a bigger impact than ayu...when namie first came on the scene, people were for the first time exposed just like the way people were when madonna first came on the scene.(sorry, madonna was the only star that came on my mind).People were filled with awe that such singer could ever exists.Compared to ayu when she first came to the scene, she didn't created a massive uproar.........i don't really want to go into detailes on why and how.........to sum it up,namie opened doors for singers like ayumi hamasaki and utada....though their styles differ in many ways.
In terms of sale, namie sold more than ayumi with her debut album and became the third female singer the reach the 3 million mark...while it took ayu her compliation best album to reach that mark...i am not questioning ayumi's status..of course she is the cream of the crop. the queen of jpop as everyone would like to call her ..i am a fan of hers too....but she didn;t make the impact as big as namie....namie had more fame compared to ayu now.jpop is where it is because of namie....just ask the several jpop artist who when asked inspire them the most, always name namie....
you may choose to disagree..that is ok....why dun we just look at both ayu and namie as the queen of jpop.either way,we both wunt lose out.I personally think that in the future people will remember both of ayu and namie equally but recognise namie as the singer that started it all....

loko, sorry for getting yr name wrong..thought it was ioko......it is understandable to why u notice a huge difference between the pv years ago and the pv now...there is a huge difference, i agree.she is more sexier now and more mature...guess our opinion on sex appeal just differ....to quote sha"we just have to disagree to agree"

03-02-2004, 06:36 AM
I agree with some of the points made by powerlessangel. Namie definitely had a greater impact not just in Japan, but Korea, HK and Taiwan as well. Every girl wanted to be her, dress like, dye their hair like her. There was more of an uproar with Namie first came on the scene than when Ayu came out. However, when Namie left to get married and have her child, that really hurt her career and allowed Ayu to basically florish without any major competitors.

However, with Namie's comeback, she doesn't seem to be attracting any new fans. Most tend to be those die-heart fans from the '90s. As for the sex-appeal, I'm probably too desensitized from watching american music videos so it really doesn't seem all that bad to me.

In any case, both made major impacts to Japan's music industry. But if I had to choose, as much as I love Namie, I would have to vote for Ayu... simply because Ayu tends to reinvent herself. Namie has remained pretty much the same. Had it not been for her work on Suite Chic, her come back would have been a lot harder.

She uses sex to sell her music? Wow... I didn't realize that. Maybe I'm just jaded, but what really is "sex appeal" when it comes to music? Are you talking like Madonna or Christian and Britney or more like Mya or Jessica Simpson (though she ain't sexy by the way) No offense really, but I think Namie Amuro knows she looks pretty and hey, image does help to sell your music.

C'mon, if there was a fat and oily ugly dude who you have never heard sing compared to a hot looking dude that you can only find out of a romance novel.... uh huh... u get my drift.

And besides, I like SOME of Namie's songs, they aren't so bad, like Alarm and Four seasons, those to me are really good (really "poppish" i guess)

Me, too. I never knew anything about her but her single- girl talk and her performance in MTV Asia Aid really catched me. After that I looked for her website and download this song and two other songs. The other song... Put Them Up or sth are not that bad, but Girl Talk is the most catchy one. Her dance step is also cute. Go girl :D

Yea her tattoos are for real. Its her mom's name. There was some deal a while ago, drama about her mom and ex husband blah blah, basically her mom passed away b/c of her ex husband. (If my memory serves me correctly)

Namie's mother, Emiko, was murdered by her husband's brother, so her brother-in-law, and quite horrifically if I do remember correctly :x He comitted suicide after he killed her

Her mom's mudered? OMFG that's terrible! How old was Namie when that happened? =.=

Yeah, Namie's HOT. Her figure's so darn good, who would believe that she's got a kid already. She was splendid in MAA, I couldn't take my eyes off her, but her sagment was so short.

Wow who would have guessed Namie had such a sad story! She's really good her music is really good she is very pop-y-ish and I am not too into pop and I still like her so that shows something! The only thing about her I don't like is her live performances cause I find that she has no...charisma

I like Namie Amuro. Her songs are nice and I like her style too.
I don't really know much of her life, like her background. But, that's terrible..I mean about her mom getting murdered and all.

She was the first Japanese female singer that I know and like!
Saw her on TV for her MTV for her song, "Body Feels Exist" when I was young and she was so sexy!
She really can dance very well ...... :excited:
Guess she will still be my favourite Japanese female singer no matter what!

Really!! Namie had such a horrible past. Why the heck did he kill her anyway??? :? I never knew that. She has a pretty face but sad eyes, that probably hides those sad things from us. Namie must have a lot of inspiraton to write songs from this bad experience. Go girl!!

Yeah, Namie!

And a local magazine Lime, did featured her in the Tsunami event thingy. What she was wearing was way cool. She looks petite and the magazine says she looks like an elf with little pointy ears. Cute!

Oh, and her clothing is nice. A geisha rebel like the magazine says. :shiny:

And yeah, jtayk, I noticed that she have sad eyes too. I hope she'll be strong to overcome all odds life throw her way. :winkz:

hey namie fans...just bumping this up so we can discuss her new album, Queen of Hip Pop----which i am currently loving at the moment!

I spazz over "Ups and Downs", her duet with nao'ymt...

Was aware of Namie from the 90s but never really paid attention. And last week while i was looking for some new music, i came upon her new stuff. it's a real kick-ass album i should say!

I also read about all the happenings in her life and bravo to her for still being in the music biz for this long...

so...any thoughts on Queen of Hip Pop? :excited:

But Singapore have to wait for another week or so to get it here!
Me and Shirley is waiting patiently for it!

I learnt from my Taiwanese friend who is a fan of her too, it was released last Friday in Taiwan and comes with a limited edition BODY SIZED POSTER with very CD purchased...

Sigh..Singapore is a very small market to do any major promotions...

no, don't be sad, crazygirl48...at least Singapore gets to host kpop concerts and cpop stars promoting their albums!!!

while here in the philippines, we are always left out...i'm hoping that with korean dramas popular here, maybe kpop or jpop will be able to make a grand entrance as well... >__<

In Taiwan, it is the only place other than Japan to have an official fan club branch by her management company.
You have to pay yearly fees of around S$80 and you can get official magazine and get privileges to buy her concert tickets if you are in Japan.
MY friends in Taiwan are members of this club and envy that they can get the magazines...

So she is quite popular in Taiwan...cos she even held concerts there last year..
Guess in Singapore, we can only dream of her! :-x

I only have a couple of songs from her.. "Four Seasons," the one that was the closing theme for Inuyasha, and "Want me, want me" which was pretty funny, because of it how it sounded in English..

Anyways.. she's pretty good.. Sortive look like Hamasaki Ayumi for some reason.. .>< a little darker though..

i found this:
"However, 1999 was a painful year for Namie; during the promotion of the single RESPECT the POWER OF LOVE, her mother (who was remarried) was brutally murdered by her mother's mentally unstable brother-in-law." -wikipedia

:worry: so she was 22 yr old when that happened. that really sux. i also she read she have a child, geez and she still look good.

I just realised something. Namie Amuro sang a cover version of song that Jay had written for Vivian Hsu. The song original sang by Vivian Hsu is title Wo Ai Ni X4.

Try listening to it

Jay didn't write that song for Vivian, the song Namie (and Vivian) covered was an old 90s hit song by an artist named NOKKO called 'Ningyo' :)
